There are two things that come to mind when I hear the name Sam Smith- Old Soul and R&B. This Grammy Award-winning artist released his sophomore album November 3, 2017. From his first song on the album, “Too Good at Goodbyes” I knew Smith was going to take us on a musical ride filled with Love, Heartbreak, and Raw Emotion. When Billboard asked about the album, Sam Smith Said, "I wasn't trying to make a big pop record when I made this album. I was actually just trying to make something personal and like a diary." This shows growth not only musically, but a sense of maturity in Smith’s musical approaches and topics shown through the lyrics in this album. Smith is known for his notorious songs about heartache, but with mix of contemporary

Chris Stapleton has never been one to be in the spotlight. He has hidden behind famous country artists by writing others number one hits, however, he became a sensation overnight when he released his 2015 album, Traveler. When his label asked him to do his first music video, he chose to do a powerful song titled, “Fire Away.” It is no surprise that he did not want to be featured in the music video. Instead, he decided to bring awareness to mental illness. The music video follows a couple that is torn apart by the wife’s depression. The husband, who happens to be a police officer, tries to rescue her. However, he is not successful. While the music video
Michael Gow’s “Away” is an Australian play, set in the summer of 1967-68, in a time of great social and political change. “Away” tells the story of three families, each from different social classes, living in suburban Australia, as they each embark on their own holiday, attempting to escape their underlying personal issues. Immigrants Harry and Vic love their adopted country but are constantly faced with their son, Tom’s, terminal illness, while Jim and Gwen fret over their daughter Meg’s blossoming independence and her friendship with the socially unsuitable Tom, and Roy is unable to console a grief–stricken Coral over the death of their only son during the Vietnam war. Although each family is completely dissimilar, the theme of love remains
In the article “Blue-Collar Brilliance”, Mike Rose’s main focus was to convey that there are forms of intelligence than just being intellectual. Rose, suggest that a broader perspective of education allow us to expand our understanding of what intelligence is. Rose explains what our culture views as intelligence: “Our cultural iconography promotes the muscled arm; sleeve rolled tight against biceps, but no brightness behind the eye, no image that links hand and brain” (Rose). In making this comment, Rose urges us to take a step back and to look society’s perception of blue-collar work as not as demanding or requiring as much brain powering as white-collar work. Often people do not realize that a person who has a blue-collar job is just as
The main theme in Gone by Michael Grant is that people will stand up for what they believe in when they need to. In this book when everything is going wrong all people over the age of fifteen have disappeared into thin air and kids are all that's left in the FAYZ (fallout alley youth zone). Sam and Astrid, the two main characters, have to stand up to the kids that put themselves in charge of the FAYZ. Sam and Astrid are forced into a position of leadership and must stand up for what's right.
What I liked about Phildelphia's own Devoni Jacob new single "AFTER12" was the effort she put into making a song that had the raw honest thoughts that we think of once the clock begins a new day. The production
Chris Stapleton released his debut album, Traveller, in the Spring of 2015. This album is characterized by what I would describe as a traditional country feel, but with a slightly more modern sound, or to be more technical, a country rock meets blues album. This record, and Chris Stapleton himself, went relatively unnoticed by the general public after initial release. It was not until the 2015 CMA awards when Stapleton performed “Tennessee Whiskey” with Justin Timberlake that his album truly took off (Welch). Since then, songs from Traveller can frequently be heard on national country radio stations, as well as on tour, a show I will be attending in May.
The Solo&Ensemble event was new for me this year but I was glad to participate. The first step was to choose a song. I chose ‘‘He’s Gone Away‘‘ (American Folk song) arranged by Ruth Elaine Schram because it sounds so nice and it seemed to me that it perfectly works with my type of voice and my abillities. And my partner Amy can sing basically anything so we were all set very quickly.
He moved to the United States to start his rapping career. In 2006 he launched his first mixtape " Room for Improvement". Aubrey Drake Graham makes music for people to listen too. Each song or mixtape that he drops opens up people minds and makes them start thinking. Drake is known as the type to make you get into your " feelings". Whether it's good or bad, you'll
Treyvon Jones is a thirteen year old young man who has just started his freshman year at J.M. Wright Technical High School in Stamford, CT. Treyvon was referred for a literacy evaluation due to his score on the STAR Reading Assessment, which placed him significantly below his current grade level. On the Reading Interest Survey for Older Students, Treyvon noted that his favorite activities are baseball, tennis and video games. Treyvon stated that he enjoys reading about current events, history and sports and that he does “not like reading huge books!” Treyvon reads books as opposed to newspapers or magazines, and has not used audio books since elementary school. In response to a question about reading for pleasure, Treyvon replied that he only
He has a new sound. Formerly of the duo Sammy & Skate, Sammy’s music style is transitioning from strictly rap/hip-hop to more laidback songs that integrate an island feel, reflective of his new life in sunny Los Angeles. He personally describes it as hip-hop/pop with a taste of reggae.
He performed a melody of songs including one off of his new album that will be released March 11, 2016 called “Fired Up.” He also played classic hits like “How Country Feels,” “Like a Cowboy,” “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight,” and “Goodnight
Christopher McCandless’ story does not just begin from when Jim Gallien picked him up on the side of the road. It begins much more before that. A few years before Chris left to Alaska, he met a man named Wayne Westerberg. In 1990 Wayne picked up Chris on the side of the road. Before leaving him they stopped at Wayne’s friends house. At his house they ate a big dinner made by the friend’s wife, because they had heard that Chris had not eaten in days. After leaving the house Wayne was about to drop off Chris when he realized how late it was. He asked him if he wanted to spend the night in his trailer, Chris ended up staying for three days. Before leaving Wayne offered Chris a job, if he ever needed one, a few weeks later Chris came back and took
Bobby Womack, a singer who had sang alongside Cooke in some acts said, “He went out there and started singing and people would not believe his voice.” Sam Cooke was a different breed of Gospel singer, and he changed the style, giving it an edge and a more youthful appeal. In 1955, Cooke began cutting secular songs to make it big with Specialty Records, and became a hit instantly with his hits, “I’ll Come Running Back to You,” and “You Send Me” (Gulla, 114). His short career produced many memorable hits and records, and in the midst of it, Cooke served his black community in the struggle over civil rights. In parallel to the movement and in light of his son’s tragic death and Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In the Wind,” Cooke wrote, “A Change Is Gonna Come” in 1963 (“Song Facts”). Cooke suddenly died in 1964, right before the release of the song, and black America plunged into despair because he had been a ray of light, a symbol of hope, and an emblem of equality and racial balance (Gulla, 109). He had been an icon for both blacks and whites alike. In spite of his shorted career, “A Change Is Gonna Come” affected America with is raw lyrics and unprecedented emotion Cooke displays in his song.
Let’s all admit that if we want to be tagged as cool based on our music preferences, we should cite The Weeknd as one atop our playlists. There’s something innately different with The Weeknd---from the way that he sings, the songs that he released and the aura that he exudes; all of which made him a dear choice in the world of pop and mainstream music. After the ultimate successes of some of his tracks such as Can’t Feel My Face, The Hills and Love Me Harder, this fantastic soloist is out and about again, further solidifying his state as a relative artist to the so-called Millennials. The Weeknd will surely capture your interest again through the release of his new music video.
