For as long as I can remember, I've always aspired to become a nurse, a healthcare professional who is always helping patients receive the highest quality care and compassion. As a young child I was often in and out of the hospital, I'd received treatment after treatment and I found myself fatigued by the end of it all. However, receiving high quality care and genuine concern from the nurses made the experience much less excruciating. After I'd learned about that profession as a child I felt that I wanted to do the same for others as those nurses had done for me. After graduating Anacortes High school I plan on attending a four year private liberal arts university. I will be pursing a Bachelors of Science in Nursing leading to a career as a Registered Nurse. My main interest is a specialty in pediatrics. Following a month stay at Children's Hospital after enduring emergency surgery and a difficult recovery I decided nursing is what I'm meant to do. My initial interest in nursing began from my experience with my grandmother. It was in the fall of 2007 when my grandmother was sent to the hospital due to hypernatremia. My dad would pick me up every afternoon from school to visit my grandmother. I was given the responsibility to look after my grandma for nearly two weeks that includes in feeding her, assisting her, and other light duties. What fascinate me during my visits in the hospital were the nurses who assisted and took care of my grandma. They treated my grandma with dignity, kindness, compassion, courtesy, respect, understanding, and love. Their commitment, professionalism, dedication, determination and skills inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field. From that point, I realized that nursing is a field that enables people impact other people’s lives and make a difference. At 9 years old, being a nurse was a childhood dream and now I am at the point of turning my dream into reality. I want to study and pursue my dream registered nursing at Ryerson University that offers a nursing degree program that focuses on developing student’s critical thinking skills, ability to analyze reflectively and apply theory through community health focused practice making Ryerson one of the best nursing schools in Canada.

The APN leader interviewed for this paper is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), Chery Arnett works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She began as a registered nurse in 1981, then in 2001earned her CNP title. She manages and cares for the ill neonate, collaborates with Neonatologist and Pediatricians to improve overall health outcomes. She provides support and assists ventilation, assists with deliveries both “normal” and high risk infants, provides care for the healthy newborns, also providing guidance to parents for caring for the “neonate” or healthy newborns. She is also responsible for assessments, orders, treatment plans, medications, and discharge of the infant. CNP’s provide initial, ongoing and comprehensive care, including managing patients with acute and chronic illness and diseases for both premature infants and term infants.

My mom is a nurse for Hospice at the University of Kansas Hospital and her main department is Hospice. Hospice is where people come when they have 6 or less months to live before they pass away. It is for people who are dying and you can either stay in the hospital or you can stay in your own home. Why does she do this you may ask well because she loves to take care of, save, and comfort others. But being and becoming a nurse isn’t easy because it take 4 years of nursing school. So then after all the hard work she became a nurse she hasn’t stopped because she has been one for 33 years.

Ever since I decided that I wanted to become a nurse, I have hoped to obtain my degree from the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.    For me, the way the U of M nursing program exposes its students to a combination of  typical classroom setting and actual hands on learning is something that is exceptionally appealing. Also, the Ann Arbor campus is a highly accredited school known for its exceptional medical studies, programs, and overall campus life.

The committee should choose me for the reason that I will be diligent and study earnestly for that spot. What I can offer to the program includes my distinguishable qualities such as empathy, calmness, decisiveness, and critical thinking. The reason I chose to major in Nursing is for my passion for working in the medical field and impacting people lives. I would like to believe if given the opportunity to be in the nursing program; I will complete the tasks that are required of me for myself and my family’s sake. Another essential point is that I am a first generation college student, I struggled both academically and emotionally during my first year at Commerce. However, with my determination paired with dedication, I confronted various obstacles and prevailed to achieve the necessary grades.

Please consider this letter as my application for the position of Registered Nurse at Decatur Morgan Hospital Emergency Department. I graduated from John C. Calhoun State Community College, School of Nursing on August 6, 2013, with my certification in Practical Nursing. On December 16, 2015. I will be graduating with an Associate Degree in Nursing and will sit for examination soon after.

I grow both personally and professionally through my relationship with nursing. Unlike many other careers, the growth is reciprocal. Nursing gives me the freedom to venture into uncharted territory and in turn, nursing’s boundaries expand. As the field of nursing develops and strengthens in new areas, unique and rewarding opportunities become available to me. While I achieve a Master’s of Science in Adult Primary Care from New York University the profession of nursing will, in return, be rewarded with a valuable contributor.

Due to having three younger siblings I have always had responsibility for those more vulnerable than myself, which has given me firsthand experience of looking after others, the main basis of nursing. I am particularly interested in adult care within hospital, and the impact which immediate help can have on the patients. A recent inspiration which resounded with me was Dianne Brown, Nursing Director at Liverpool Women's who on hearing of the significantly long waiting times for patients in a separate department, organised for over 50 of them to be fed. It helped me feel definite that nursing is what I want to do, where I can provide physical and medical care, but also be in a position to make a difference in more simple ways, whether giving
