Introduction In 1836, Samuel Colt introduced his Colt Pearson revolver to the world. This moment changed the course of history and made a legend of both the man and his product. Though the invention of the revolver did have an enormous impact on society, was it for the better? Did it bring peace as the name one model suggests, the Colt Peacemaker, or did it bring death and destruction? It is a difficult task to look back on the impact of an invention and determine whether or not society would have been better off without it. The revolver can be considered as being both a tool of protection and an efficient dealer of death. It has a storied history that, good or bad, is legendary. The Innovation That Made the West There were two innovations Samuel Colt introduced to the weapons manufacturing industry that changed the world. The first was the revolving cylinder. Prior to Sam Colt, the only pistols with the capability to fire multiple rounds without reloading had to have multiple barrels and …show more content…
Thus making it not only widely available, but also relatively inexpensive. These facts made for a very dangerous combination in a vast landscape with few lawmen. The Wild West, as it was called became a lawless place, a place where a small gang of men could rob banks, stagecoaches, and trains with impunity. One example of such outlawry can be seen in the legendary exploits of Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang. Jesse and his gang had terrorized the people of Missouri and the southwest for sixteen years before he was finally gunned down by a fellow gang member in 1882. He is credited with having robbed eleven banks, seven trains, three stagecoaches, one county fair payroll messenger, and the murder of sixteen people [Neosho Daily News, 1979]. Jesse’s weapon of choice in the committing of these crime’s was his trustee pair of Colt .45 peacemakers
The infamous outlaw of the west known as Billy the Kid was born in a poor Irish neighborhood on New York City’s East side (A). Before he died at the age of 21, he killed 27 people (A). Billy’s original name was Henry McCarty (A). At about 1865, Billy and his brother traveled to Indiana with their mother and step-father (A). By 1870 the family moved to Wichita, Kansas (A). Then they moved farther west to the New Mexico Territory in 1873 (A). Billy’s mother died of lung cancer in Silver City in 1874 (A).
What is the importance of the gun? The gun is one of the most important tools in the defense of our nation. Guns are responsible for a lot of death and injuries, but these things were going on before the existence of the gun. Guns aren't the reason for the death and injuries, they are just a means to it. They are tools and an engineering marvel of our age. The gun has evolved from a simple weapon that caused limited destruction to the modern gun that is so fast and powerful it is capable of mass destruction. Through the evolution of the gun, it has become a political tool.
"Battleground America," written by Jill Lepore, provides a strong history of guns and the way they have changed in the eyes of the American through the years. She proves her point with strong evidence throughout her article, sprinkling it with opinion and argument that is strongly supported. She presents her argument to convince her audience that the open availability of guns allows citizens to undeservingly purchase them by displaying the credibility in her sources, using negative connotations in her speech, and the strength and objectivity only a strong logos appeal can provide.
Being a soldier at Valley Forge is so overwhelming like a family on Christmas eve.
Many people during Andrew Jackson’s time saw him as an enigma while others saw an image much more positive, which was a hero. Jackson was respected for many things such as his victories in the War of 1812, also for bringing the country toward democracy. On the other hand hand many people believed him to be a “traitor” and “a man of many faces” as stated in the Article “James Parton’s Description of Jackson”, But in my opinion he was a good president that did events that should go down in history. Here are my reasons as to why i think he should be on the 20 Dollar bill.
Guns and weaponry have always been a major part of the cultures of the world since the beginning of time. For the United States of America, gun use can be traced back to the colonial days, our revolutionary roots. They have helped the United States turn the table specifically in times of dire need such as the Revolutionary War. Not only have advances in weaponry influenced the U.S., they have also helped to shape events across the globe. In 1791, this was understood by the Founding Fathers while writing the Constitution, which can be seen in the Second Amendment: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”[1]. With the advancement of guns specifically, there has been a rise in mass shootings, casualties, crime and controversy that has begun to split the United States. All a person has to do is turn on the television to a news channel, and at any given time, heartache, most often linked to guns, can be found. Some cry for a need for better gun regulation or sometimes complete abolishment for recreational use, while others cling to their weapons with claim of self-defense and economic profit. Violent crimes have been on the rise years; there has been an estimated 1.2 billion crimes of violence that occurred in the United States alone [2]. One thing is certain: gun trade and regulation boosts the economy. Last year, 301,
In 2016, Donald Trump was elected for president. In 2017, Trump took office, and almost everyone was thrilled to see this man lead the United States. People wore shirts of him, hats of him, celebrities supported him widely, singers wrote songs about him, and everyone chanted his famous line, “Make American Great Again”. In 1828, a familiar man won the hearts of Americans and claimed the title as the president of the United States after the brutal defeat in the 1824 Election. Similar to Trump, Andrew Jackson was not just seen as a leader at that time, but an icon as well. People were chomping at the bit just to touch the man. The man who was well liked because of his major role in the War of 1812, the Seminole War, and his status as a war hero. Andrew Jackson and his followers created the modern Democratic Party, during his Presidency and the era from 1830 - 1850 that became known as the Jacksonian Democracy. This is hard to believe because Jackson wasn't the brightest, “Adams called him a barbarian who could not write a sentence of grammar” (Foner pg. 367). Similar to other presidents that the United States has had, Jackson made a mass amount of actions that raised some eyebrows and even chaos. These actions made by Jackson nearly destroyed the nation, especially the economic matter. Although I hold Jackson in high regard for his tremendous boldness, this trait was his hamartia, or his downfall. Because of his boldness, he was egotistical, thinking that he can just decide on
Andrew Jackson was an amazing president. He did many excellent things for our country. One of the outstanding things that Andrew Jackson did was, serve as a courier for the local militia. Jackson was a self- made man. He was never handed anything. He always had to work for it. His father died before Jackson had been born, which had inspired him to fight in the Revolutionary war. Along with being involved in the Revolutionary War, he was also selected the commander of the Tennessee Militia in 1801, He led the ´Battle of New Orleans´, ´the War of 1812´, and the First ever ´Seminole War.´ All of this military experience gained him a good amount of votes for his presidential Campaign in 1828. Years before Jackson became president, he was a judge in Tennessee. Once Jackson won the election
President Andrew Jackson was “renowned as a skilled Indian fighter” after the battle of New Orleans in 1814. Over a decade later, with no surprise, Andrew Jackson forced the Cherokee tribe out of their homeland in Georgia. The Native Americans were under United States Military guard as they marched many miles on the Trail of Tears until they reached present day Oklahoma. A quarter of the tribe died on the trail due to starvation and disease; therefore, Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Policy was inhumane.
As Jackson transitioned from a military leader to the president of the United States, he changed from no longer being able to explicitly announce his true motives in gaining Indian land for the state; Jackson had to use deception and secrecy to accomplish his intentions. During battles against the Indian tribes, military leader, Andrew Jackson would often dehumanize his foes as “savage bloodhounds” and “blood thirsty barbarians”; his belief that the advancement of the republic could only occur if the Native enemies were in submission, rationalized his use of violence (Takaki 85). Jackson’s role as a general allowed him to assert(declare/insist) his purpose of having Natives ceded their land to the state. He was able to use any means and firepower
“No one need think that the world can be ruled without blood. The civil sword shall and must be red and bloody,” (Andrew Jackson). In this quote, you can see that Jackson was a very violent person. This was quite the case in the time of his presidency, and even before it. From a young age, Jackson developed a temper, and never quite outgrew it. In his teens, he joined a local militia. Jackson decided to work in the law department in North Carolina after the war. He took the reputation of the fiercest fellow in the town. He continued law in Tennessee and soon earned enough money to finally keep him on his feet. Jackson established himself as a gentleman planter. He became known in the Battle of New Orleans and his popularity only grew from there.
Johnson was right in wanting Reconstruction to be simple and meet a minimum test of loyalty. The country won’t agree on everything so why have a full exam on loyalty? We took an oath to the Union and Constitution, rewrote our state constitutions, and got rid of what our entire economy survived on just because you thought it was bad. Isn’t that enough? So our state government shouldn’t be taken away. We never gave up our right to govern ourselves, and the President agrees the federal government has no right to determine questions at our state level. He cares about us, giving Presidential pardons, even to us Southern plantation owners, allowing state government to be reestablished and accepted, and giving our rights back. But not Congress.
In Utah, an eighteen-year-old boy, James Edwards, in foster care wants to get the right of owning an arm. Utah Division of Child and Family Services didn't give him permission to get a firearm, but the boy's attorney was defending his rights by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The judicial process didn't permit the Edwards to bear the firearm for the purposes of safety of the other people that are
This paper will explore the history of guns, myths and realities of gun violence. Gun violence is a hot topic in America today and some may believe that America was built on gun violence. This country was colonized by the use of violence with guns. We’ve had wars since the invasion of this country. The violence has been around also with the well-known 1775 speech from Patrick Henry, “Give me liberty or give me death” (Jr.). Give me death is a very strong statement that to me means this is of a violent nature. Since then violence with guns would only escalate from taking land to taking lives whether it be homicides, suicides or threats of violence against one another. With the violent history of gun violence in America and so many different opinions, who or what is responsible for the destruction on self and society and what are the some of the ways to discourage these behaviors.
In the past year, I am sure that you have heard about the issue of gun control. Well, do you really know the full story behind the debate? My goal for this essay is to fully explain everything to you behind this issue and why it is such a big deal in our world today. Through these contrasting opinions on gun control, the world will never fully decide what is completely right.
