Sandi Toksvig explains during a Ted Talk about the inequality women continue to face in current time, and how it’s time to come equal to men. The first thing she points out is the inequality that occurs in sports. For example, she goes on to explain the displeasure she has towards them because it mainly consists of men. She later proceeds to discuss how nowhere in the world do women have equal representation in positions of power, and how it correlates to the biggest issue the workforce has had, the gender pay gap. She obviously points out how women have been subordinate of men in many occasions, and her being a fighter for gender equality, recommends people and especially women to come together and fight for an equal spot in society.

Still adding on how gender plays a huge role in society, this statement also involved both the feeling of anger and sadness. Never did I imagine that it would come down at the ballot box where women and men are finally considered equal. In addition, after she said that statement, my outlook on her changed for the better. I was glad to know that an individual like her is fighting for the end of inequality. That not only is she conscious of the current problems women face, but that she’s also making others realize of the issue if they don’t know already. It made me view her beyond that of an extraordinary activist who is setting an example for others, fighting for real world …show more content…
However, this one I must disagree. Even though the previous two have no sort of correlation to this one, I wanted to explain why I selected this particular one. I believe that secrets are signified to keep to you, and not meant for others to know about it. That’s why they’re secrets. However, she compares having them as “cancer of the soul.” In my opinion, if you no longer want to hold a secret, you are more than welcome to make it public. Other than that, I don’t view having secrets as a bad thing. Despite of the statement, it never made me question or doubt her about wanting to fight for women’s equality and meaning it. Overall, she was knowledgeable about the topic, and she kept the video entertaining with her sarcasm.
The reason why I really liked the video was because it discussed about women equality. Being myself a woman, I believe it’s important to notice the issues that occur because of our gender. This video helped me get a perspective of what my future might look like due to the fact that I am a female. For example, the genders pay gap or not getting an equal representation in positions of power. Additionally, I don’t think the video relates much to my life at the moment, but I do know for a fact that
The first thing I liked about this clip was the girls’ confidence. This greatly had a huge impact on the overall video and on me because these girls were confident with what they were saying. Anybody can say claims and counterclaims regarding what they are speaking for but, if they don’t have a loud, clear and strong
As the article reveals the immense pay gap women are receiving compared to men when they achieve similar accomplishments. “Women players at Wimbledon, women's tennis has problems winning big sponsors. Golfer Juli Inkster won her sport's career grand slam last month, winning the Ladies Professional Golf Association Championship. She got $210,000. The same weekend, the Buick Classic paid its male winner $450,000” (Christian Science Monitor, 1999). As one can clearly infer women have been stripped of their equality in the realm of sports. Women work just as hard as men to achieve this success in their respected sport and should be rewarded for doing
That the women of this country ought to be enlightened in regard to the laws under which they -live, that they may no longer publish their degradation, by declaring themselves satisfied with their present position, nor their ignorance, by asserting that they have all the rights they want.
As a matter of fact, professional male players have much less to lose when standing up for equal pay for female athletes: They have a huge viewership, lucrative salaries, numerous sponsorships, secure contracts. In the male-dominated sports industry, if men’s teams stood up and said women deserve equal pay, equal attention, equal programming, it would only push the fight forward faster, and the sports-obsessed world would be forced to pay attention. As we saw with the women’s hockey and soccer teams, women can go it alone, but why should
Regardless of skin color, women in general somehow always tend to get the short-end of the stick; but that doesn’t mean that they won’t fight for what they believe in. Recently, there has been much debacle in the world of sports. The Guardian posted an article on how the US Women’s Soccer Team is accusing the US Soccer Federation of wage discrimination. Five members of the team filed a federal complaint stating that they were paid four times less than the males within the past year. In the article, soccer player Megan Rapinoe stated during a press release that, “Recently, it has become clear that the federation has no intention of providing us equal pay for equal work.” Meanwhile, The Guardian also took statements from players Hope Solo and Carli Lloyd as they argued on an NBC show that, “In this day and age, it’s about equality. It’s about equal rights. It’s about equal pay. We’re pushing for that. We believe now the time is right because we believe it’s our responsibility for women’s sports and specifically for women’s soccer to do whatever it takes to push for equal pay and equal rights. And to be treated with respect.” Lloyd then added that, “I think we’ve proven our worth over the years. Just coming off a World Cup win, the pay disparity between the men and women is just too large. We want to continue to fight. The generation of players before us fought. And now it’s our job to keep
the gender pay gap is always showing inequality..The women on the U.S. national soccer team don’t get paid as much as the men, so they have filed a complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission . The numbers in the complaint are stark, showing that the women earned less than the men’s national team despite far better performance. Team member Becky Sauerbrunn said, “U.S. Soccer has no justification for paying us as little as they do.” There actually is an economic justification for the women's soccer pay disparity. This is saying, that women are being paied less or what men do worse when they do better. This means that women are not being payed as much as men as you would think… there mad and i would be to if i was doing
One of the beginning issues of women being oppressed starts with the wage gap between working women and men. This wage gap is often one of the most direct roots to the overwhelming amount of women living in poverty. Despite many women working, or looking for work in the U.S, they have been continually paid less than their male counterparts. For years, women, especially those who are working class’ equal rights have been pushed aside and causes an endless cycle of oppression for many women. The inequalities working-class women face such as the wage gap causes economical issues such as poverty, that affects the economy as a whole. In efforts to close the wage gap, the United States needs to raise the federal minimum wage, ensure family and medical leave, and encourage everyone to speak out about gender equality.
One of the first claims she disputes is the fact that countless men say that women deserve all the care in the world. In her speech the speaker says,” That man
The video we had watched was really interesting. I really resonated with the idea that no matter how hard Mexican Americans tried, they were never good enough. There are many minority groups that feel this way within the United States, including women. Civil Rights are still something people are fighting for today. This story was unique in the specific group it helped, but it was not unique in what the group was working toward. Discrimination is something that many people face and have faced, but today there are more programs and services in place to ensure that rules and laws are fair. It is important to acknowledge that change has happened because more people of color were allowed to have input in government and areas of society.
Not only is gender discrimination seen in sports, but it can be witnessed in regular jobs as well. Just like the story of Cassandra, women of all educational levels can experience a wage gap. One might imagine that with a great education, breaking the stereotypical gap would be possible, but the reality is that even with education women find it hard to break the the wage gap. According to the Pew Research Center, women in the U.S. who work full time are typically paid only 77 cents for every dollar paid to their male coworkers make. Even when women earn a Bachelor’s degree, they still make less than what men with the same degree make (about $51,681 vs. $52,072). In some cases men with only a high school degree typically make more than women
Women’s equality is an issue that has been around for awhile. While women have been given many rights to increase equality, including the right to vote and go to college, the problem hasn’t completely vanished. One area that still sees this is in sports. Women’s sports do not draw nearly as many fans and are not covered in the media as much as men’s sports, pay differences between male and female athletes are large, and female athletes have to wait longer to start their professional career than men, which risks their professional career before it even starts.
"For me, it 's not even that I 'm a feminist. I 'm for anybody. I 'm for everybody, for everything. I don 't care what you want to do in your life, or whom you want to be with, which you want to love, who you want to look like. I’m a feminist in the way that I’m really empowering to women.”
I would like to start off by saying that the men and women, mothers and fathers, on the panel are very brave. I notice one MTF transgender woman talked about how she wasn't as brave as the son who came out in high school, but i disagree. i believe that she is extremely brave for being the woman she always wanted to be. This video was just moving. It was touching and deep but also gave comedic relief. I understand that its hard for someone to be the person they want to be. Socity and the media depics a perfect person as one thing, but being perfect is defind by the person looking at it. If a guy knows deep donw they do not want to be a guy and wants to be a girl, they are still pefect.
The definition of gender roles is a set of societal norms dictating what types of behavior is generally considered acceptable based on the gender of a person. Additionally, if you don’t seem to accept this standard, there can be huge consequences. For example, in India, women are viewed as a burden and a “extra mouth to feed.” Her status promotes the idea that men can treat them in a subdued manner. If they don’t comply to these requirements, then a woman is murdered by her husband or his family by being set alight by a flammable liquid, which is usually known as bride burning. Herland, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, also uncovers the harsh inequality of women. Gender roles shouldn’t be real and they were forced on us by society.
She makes another statement affirming her position that female oppression could be related to anything but human constructs that must be destroyed:
