Imagine a world where school shootings did not exist. Parents could send their children to school without having to worry about them being shot. In 2013, thirty school shootings took place in the United States. The most devastating school shooting in U.S. history was the Bath School shooting. On May 18, 1927, Andrew Kehoe entered the Bath Elementary School killing thirty-eight people and injuring fifty-eight. Kehoe then returned to his truck, and committed suicide by using explosives. School teachers would have a better chance, in high risk situations if they carried guns.

"First, there's the shooting." On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School and took 26 lives, most of them belonging to children. Sadly, too many situations similar to this have occurred prior to and since. In January 2013, Stephen King published an extended essay called Guns exploring the issue of gun violence in the United States.

On December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, a twenty year old man, Adam Lanza, went into Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire in two rooms. He murdered twenty children and seven adults before turning the gun on himself (Fahrenthold). Once again, if one of these teachers would have carried a firearm, they could have possibly saved the lives of the first graders and the adults that were murdered.

Sandy Hook was a chaotic town on December 14, 2012 where gunman, Adam Lanza, shot and killed twenty children and six staff members. While rampage attacks are a difference in school shooting incidents that have captured the sculpted eye of mass media's attention in the last decade, a broader historical perspective reveals a wide range of school-related shooting incidents. the school-related mass murder incident, typically carried out by an individual who targets categories of individuals or the school institution in general. School-related mass murders are a branch of mass murder incidents, where an adult perpetrator, who is not a current or former student or employee, targets a school institution or group of students, selected for their importance. As in rampage cases, such incidents are sometimes labeled "postal-type shootings", and are typically people who desire power.

In the United States mass shootings has been a problem for the last few years especially school shootings which occurs often in the country. Why in this country? Well statistics shows that the United States has 31% of all public mass shootings from 1966 to 2012. Although, the percentage has gone up for the last five years. There is a higher risk of dying at school than at any public places. The government and the president of the United States are not treating this problem right and it has become a phenomenon in the country. According to the blog “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother: A Mom’s Perspective On the Mental Illness Conversation In America” by Liza Long, she discusses her struggles with her mentally ill son and states the lack of help she was getting. She addresses the Sandy Hook incident in Newtown, Connecticut to relate it to her situation and how she fears her son might lead to murderous attack like the Sandy Hook shooting. Many of the causes that lead to school shootings are; lack of gun control, mental health & bullying, and definitely lack of protection at schools.

School shootings are defined as being a mass shooting which involves a gun attack on an educational institution. The first known shooting in the United States happened during the 1700s. Four Lenape American Indians entered a schoolhouse near present-day Greencastle, Pennsylvania. The schoolmaster, Enoch Brown, was shot and killed along with several other children in which only two survived. There have been hundreds of shootings since, and more specifically there have been at least 156 school shootings in America since 2013. School shootings are not a thing of the past, and they will probably still continue into the future. To prevent mass shootings in the future schools must have new safety measures in place, and certain steps such as gun control and easy access to mental help can ensure the safely of citizens here at home.

The gunman, was 20-year-old Adam Lana, who first shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. He then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School where he fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. As first responders arrived, Lana committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. We as a nation must stand up and oppose mass murdering because these actions are not only unjust but inhuman as well.  The increase in gun violence can be decreased by, identifying the regions in the country where the most gun violence occurs and restricting their access to limiting or monitoring the availability of guns and ammunition.

Not one person from Sandy Hook, Connecticut ever thought this sort of event would ever happen. There has been an average of one school shooting every week in America since the Sandy Hook shooting. On the fourteenth of December, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, 20-year-old Adam Lanza not only killed his mother in her home, but also twenty children and six members of staff at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This was to be the third deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The Huffington Post reports that as of 2014, there have been over 200 school shootings. These have resulted in at least 94 deaths and over 156 serious and minor injuries. American society is prone to violence and no one is safe from the possibility of becoming a victim to crime. Once news had gotten out after minutes of the mass shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary the people of Newtown and media from all over the states rushed to the scene. According to a website called Daily News released November 26, 2013 by Edgar Sandoval titled ‘Inside Adam Lanza's lair Newtown shooter plotted own death “All of the 5.56 mm shell casings recovered at Sandy Hook Elementary school were found to have been fired from this Bushmaster semiautomatic rifle, which was found on the floor of Room 10 after the shooting spree.” The website also mention the rifle was found next to his body of Adam Lanza and the pistol. On December 14, 2012 a very deadly and upsetting incident happened in Newtown, Connecticut. The murderer was later revealed as Adam Lanza. He was a 20 year old man who had been said to have been diagnosed with a sensory integration disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. For Lanza, growing up could be considered arduous. He had been in and out of treatment for multiple said “diagnoses” and other undiagnosed “problems”. He also took medication for his supposed OCD. His parents often would mistake his odd behaviors as a simple childhood or teenage stage. Before the school shooting, Lanza had killed his mother by lethal force at her Newton house. Lanza had shot 6 children and 20 adults fatally. After all was done, Lanza had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
