This Saturday the ground will shake when 2 of Mexico’s most talented Boxers step in the ring in a highly anticipated bout with the makings for fight of the year. This will be an all-out battle of the chins when former 3 division World Champion Abner Mares (29-1-1) squares up against Former 2 division World Champion Leo “el Terremoto” Santacruz (30-0-1). With the vacant WBC Diamond featherweight title on the line I’m sure both warriors will let IT all hang in the ring. Leo Santa Cruz is stepping up in weight from Bantam weight to Feather weight to face the gritty Mares. If you compare resumes Santa Cruz’s resume is sub-par Compared to his opponent. They do have an opponent in common and that’s Eric “Little Hands Of Steel” Morel (46-4) of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Santa Cruz ran through Morel in 5 rounds forcing Morel to retire on his stool. Many anticipated and hoped for Santa Cruz to step up his game and put his “0” on the line against the crafty and one of the best in his class Guillermo ”El Chacal” Rigondeaux (15-0). The fight never came to fruition, many are in the opinion that RIgo’s Cuban hit and don’t get hit style is not fan friendly making it a hard fight to sell. Mares has wins over Eric Morel,Vic Darchinyan, Joseph Abebko 2xs, Yohan Perez, Anselmo Moreno, and Daniel Ponce De Leon, you would have to think he is light years ahead of Santa Cruz in experience. In this case experience may not be enough as Mares was knocked out unexpectedly in a fight that was easily the upset of the year in 2013 when he faced Johhny Gonzalez (58-9). Gonzalez stopped Mares @ 2:55 seconds in the 1st round winning the WBC World featherweight title. Since then Mares has won 3 consecutive fights and seems to be back on track to returning to his World Featherweight Champion
