When a student chooses to dorm, they are forced into independency. They have more responsibilities, but they also have more freedom. Dormers are responsible for meals, laundry, money, and their well-being. In contrast, students that commute do not have to worry themselves with these responsibilities. With the parental aid, they always have a safety net to fall back on. However, living with parents often means living by their rules.

William Peace University in downtown Raleigh, NC, is a little, private school that offers single guys degree programs in a large group of human sciences and sciences majors. William Peace University was established in 1857 as the Peace Institute, a learning organization for youngsters in essential evaluations, and to ladies from secondary school to school. Today, William Peace University's central goal is to dispatch their graduates into this present reality, very much outfitted with information, and all around arranged to discover vocations in the associations of tomorrow. They cover almost 19,000 acres of property and facilities. Fortunately, this issue of on campus space that immediately followed the application selections and choice to move juniors on campus is not an uncommon problem to have. Other schools’ policies that have developed from the same issue can be utilized or modified to fix the problem at Providence College. For example, Boston College, a school which we heavily associate with and look to be on the same level with regarding our academics, has a similar space issue. Demand for on campus housing is greater than the number of beds the college has, thus students are allowed to live off campus starting their sophomore year (bc.org). Most students live off campus their junior year and if they wish to stay on campus all 4 years they must apply for additional housing, which is not guaranteed. However, if students go off campus sophomore year then they must remain off junior year as well. While on campus housing was previously granted for all students for all 4 years with the assumption that some students will live off campus, the looming space issue that is going to impact students in the fall of 2017, a version of Boston College’s policy (let, or make, juniors and seniors live off campus) should be an

Welch College was established in 1942 and is located in Nashville, Tennessee. The tiny 9 acre urban campus serves just 300 students. Welch College is currently transitioning to a 66 acre campus located in Gallatin Welch College, which was formerly known as the Free Will Baptist Bible College, is a private college that offers associate, bachelor and master degrees. My unwavering interest pursuing a Pennsylvania State University (e.g. Penn State) degree was initially sparked in 2010 when I visited the beautiful University Park campus and experienced the magnificent academic and athletic facilities. Due to my swimming competitions and involvement with the National FFA Organization, I have visited the Penn State campus numerous times since this initial visit and have fallen in love with both the campus and its distinct culture. This past July, I attended the Penn State Open House orientation receiving several academic presentations and guided tours. I also had the distinct opportunity to meet several Penn State students and witness first hand the encouraging attitude of the school. It is in this type of collegial, harmonious environment I know I will achieve long term academic success.

I find Hofstra university particularly appealing due to its principle of P.R.I.D.E. While pride to many is considered the deadliest of the seven sins, Hofstra has taken this dangerous and dogmatic concept, and converted it into a tool to create a vibrant campus for curious minded students like myself. In particular, I find the aspect Personal/Social responsibility extremely encouraging! As a student, I want to develop and mature in an environment where open minded students not only care about their education, but the good of others. Personally I know the true value of service, because if it wasn't for someone taking their time to invest in me, I would not be the student who stands before you today. Ball State University is a very reputable school with a lot of well-thought-out policies. Since 1918, Ball State has maintained a well-organized university, which is impressive when you consider the large enrollment number. However, one policy that Ball State could improve is the visitation policy. The current visitation policy is generally one of the biggest criticisms with Ball State, and for good reason. The current policy does not permit guests over in the dorms past midnight on weeknights. The reason why the policy is a problem is because it hinders the students’ academic experience, as it would deny study groups from meeting in a dorm past midnight. A feasible solution that Ball State could employ would be to extend the visitation policy to twenty-four hour visitation, but increase the consequences if hall rules are broken. This would be a more effective way of teaching responsibility, as well as allowing students to gain more academic independence.

At Ball State University, there are many mandatory policies for students living on and/or off of campus. One particular policy that really stood out to me, was the “Noise and Quiet Hours Policy”. This specific rule is only applicable to students living on campus in a dorm. On Ball State’s website, the policy claims that anything that could be considered noisy and a disruption, such as, watching TV, listening to the radio, singing, yelling, etc, should be limited and turned down when asked. Default quiet hours in the dorms are 9:30 pm to 9:00 am Sunday through Thursday and 12:00 am to 10:00 am Friday through Saturday, keeping in mind that these are subject to change depending on community votes.      Ultimately, residence hall security is up to the students who live there. Students must take responsibility for their own possessions and own well being. Since college is a time for learning and change, what better time to learn this

College is not only just a time for education. It is also a time for fellowship and time to establish relationships. Half of the time spent with others takes place on campus in the dorms, the other half, elsewhere. Visitation is a huge part of the everyday life of a college student. Everyone has friends, they want to come visit them, some of the same sex and others of the opposite. Being that Charleston Southern is a parochial college their visitation policy is stricter than those of a regular college. There is nothing wrong with a Christian school having its limits upon this subject, but it should only go so far. After all, it is still a college.
