On Thursday, March 17 I attended the theatre production of Arabian Nights at the California State University of San Bernardino. This production was made possible with a lot of help from the Theatre classes. The play Arabian Nights about a King named Shahryar who found his previous wife in the arms of another men and killed her and her lover. After killing his beloved he decided that he would marry a new woman every day and kill them after have intercourse with them. A brave women named Scheherazade marries the king because she felt that it is her destiny. Scheherezade prolongs her death by tell amazing attention catching stories for 1001 nights, and slowly heals King Sharyar broken heart.
The first aspect I am going to discuss us the acting

They lighting was overall very simple, but it brought the story to life, it helped transport us to the world from the stories being told. Sometimes that amaze me with the lightening was that throughout the show a spotlight was never completely on a particular. The lighting stay the same for most of the play. The light on the stage was equally distributed throughout the stage. The intensity of the light was kept low by having orange and red tones to describe warm moods, and blue ones to describe cold moods. The best lighting was a combination with set designing and was really brought to life by the actors in the production. During the boat ride scene in The mock Khalifah the light dim, and the background create the night sky. I found that to be very beautiful, during my lab I create that piece, and to see it brought to life was amazing. The background a small Christmas like lights were able to transport you to being on the boat ride during …show more content…
The theatre seat around 140 audience member. The Theatre is a bit small, I wish the theatre was bigger because I know that cast would have made it more interactive. Some of the actors out shine others in their performation but they were able to create a play that I am sure I will remember forever. The costume were made to make your mind follow the story, and connect with the stories being told. My favorite aspect of the play was the lighting, because it help transport me to new worlds.Overall, the play was a very well done production filled with many life lessons, and is one that every person should see in their life
During the first half of the play, I did not really notice the lights except during the scene transitions. The main reason I did not notice them is because their job during the early parts of the play were to establish the location. We were in a standard basement that had one window above the stairs, so most of the light in the room had to be coming from an artificial source, most likely a lightbulb.
Lighting was use to show the audience important people. This is shown when Gary’s mum walked in to the stadium the spot light was on here and everyone started to clap. This was to show emotion and unity everyone black or white was supporting her. This is a breathe taking scene because there has just been the end of apatite and the black and white people are starting to believe in the something and support each other.
The lighting changes during and between scenes were done extremely well. The shifts in colors and brightness of the lights helped set the mood without overwhelming the audience or being too direct. It became clear when Jackson was angry, sad, or happy. I did find myself picking up on a lot more negative aspects of the production than positive ones. As I said previously, the overuse of profanity distracted from the storyline of the show and led to a decreased enjoyment for me personally. It was also strange how only about
Such as, when the show began there were a few moments of music with the lights blacked out. When the song was cut, the lights were switched on and the production began. This faint, yet dynamic lightwork left me impressed and wondering about the hours went into making it so precise. Further into the play, I noticed that the lights were fully lit in the centre where all the actors were. But on the sides, upstage left and center stage right, I noticed that it was more dimmed at those areas because it was not our main focus as an audience. For music, she used only two songs for the entire play. Creatively, they used a “radio” and their voices as their music. For sound effects, she used telephone rings, chimes and gunshots. Overall, even though Jacq did not focus too much on lighting and sounds, I find that she did a great job especially because she didn’t try to overdo it with just
This was the first play or theatre performance that I have attended. I was unsure of what to expect, but I heard great things about this play. Furthermore, the first aspect of this production that caught my attention was the design of the set. The design gave the feeling of a run down urban neighborhood by making the outer parts of the stage look like an old brick building. The building looked like one you would find in a low-income area or projects. The scenery of the play set the stage for what type of production this would be. I especially liked the way they carefully chose not to place just any kind of props on the stage. The dusty
There was a warm general wash to illuminate the living room scene. There wasn’t spot light or light transition, because the story follows a chronological order of events happening in the same place. I was wondering at first why there wasn’t any lighting effects and then realized that it might be the lighting designer’s idea to shift all the focus to the actors – what they did and what they said on stage were much more important than all the effects that can distract the audiences. However, there is one thing that could be improved here. They could have turned on the chandeliers that was hanging on in the set to make the lighting more realistic to the audiences.
When discussing the design elements, I feel as though the element of light gets overlooked more times than not. Throughout the entirety of the performance, light played a key role in developing effects, and creating a visual reality. The first instance we saw light was in the myth of the greedy father and his daughter. In the story, the father is granted one wish; that everything he touches turn to gold. Unfortunately for the man, his wish comes true and every single thing he touches is instantly transformed to gold. In order to display this element of the play, a golden light was shined on any object the father touched, including his daughter. This light illuminated the action of the story and worked to fulfill the director’s concept. As an audience, we also saw the use of light during an actor’s important set of lines. In
Aristotle once said that “It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.” A quote like this can be correlated to people like Allen Lee Hughes, because without people like him, darkness would surely reign. In simplistic terms, Hughes is one of the worlds most renowned light designers that has ever lived. Hughes has been given numerous Tony nominations for his impressive lighting designs and now teaches the art of light at New York University, Tisch School of Arts. An eminent lighting design is essential in production because the light sets the mood of the play, and helps the audience’s attention focus on the important plot scenes. Using the I AM THEATRE video, this essay will offer a brief overview of light designer, Allen
Throughout the play, it was amazing how they used the lights to transition when tragic events occurred in play like a cliffhanger. In part three, when Shane confesses about the wrong deeds Kippy did, the light shines only at Darren and Kippy to make the event look serious; which made event suspenseful for the audience to capture their attention.
Kenton Yeager mentioned that lighting a thrust stage can be difficult because it is essential for every audience member from all different angles of the stage to be able to clearly see everything that is unfolding during the performance. I was impressed by how clear the visibility was throughout the production because there was never a moment where I felt that I could not see the faces of any of the actors. Another quality of lighting which helped with the visibility was the intensity of the lights. I noticed that the intensity of the lighting changed based on the locations where the scenes took place. Whenever Dave and Cris where having their date in the restaurant, the intensity of the lights was significantly lower to create an indoor restaurant atmosphere. On the other hand, in the scene where the two girls were playing soccer, the intensity of the lights dramatically increased to portray the idea that they were outside on a soccer field. The lights did not only get extremely bright, but also a lot warmer to give the illusion that the source of lighting was the
I truly did feel a little panicked between the dim lights, the cannons going off that were filled with cotton and confetti. When it comes to theatre when one person says lights you automatically think of sound. This show, while it did not have many sound effects, it did have a few moments where the music would set the mood during particular scenes. One of the sound effects used were bird whistles. The whistles were extremely accurate to that of a bird’s chirp and helped give the illusion that there were physically birds in the room. Another tool used that was used during this show was the harp. The harp helped give the audience a sense of eeriness whenever the harp was played after the name M’Closky was spoken. All three of these scenic elements would not go very well unless they had a set to focus everything around. The set was very detailed; however, it was simple. There were only two stationary moving pieces which consisted of the dock and the backdrop. I think that the simplicity of the set did the show justice because it did not take away from the meaning the play invoked in the audience. The set had few scenic pieces such as movable vanities, crates, and chairs, which were not all on at the same time.
The play entertained the audience for a wonderful evening at the theatre. First I will discuss the actors. All of the actors within the play, excluding the two main female leads, played more than more character.
Leadership is a key aspect in Naguib Mahfouz's book Arabian Nights and Days. Naguib demonstrates in multiple short stories throughout his book that a strong, responsible, and fair leader is very important in the maintaining of law and order. For me leadership is something to strive for and should never be taken advantage of. I believe that being in leadership position allows one to develop strong characteristics and hopefully good relations with those he or she leads. No leader will ever be perfect, but it's important to search for the best way to lead. ¨To lead people, walk behind them¨ -Lao Tzu
The lighting of any production is the most important part in my thought. the lighting puts you in the mood that you have to be in, in order to fully understand that part of the show and to actually live it like they do. For example, when they were in the park and it was raining, they had their umbrellas, and the background effects of rain made it really seem as if it was raining in the theatre. The lighting was always focused on every part of the stage, especially on those who were the main parts in that scene.
As the play is a memory play the lighting is usually quite dim to give
