The two videos we were required to watch for the assignment displayed some similarities and differences. The similarities were indicative of the two school psychologists that were both responsible for providing services for their respective districts in which they were employed by. Both school psychologists utilized various types of assessments that were age appropriate for the students they served.
The first video depicted a school psychologist, Amy Taylor, who was employed in the Pasadena, CA school system at an early childhood center that primarily served students ranging in age from 3-5 years old. As a school psychologist, Kim wanted to participate in the discussion regarding appropriate transition assessments to help the student and multi-disciplinary team make well informed decisions regarding post-secondary goals. As a school psychologist, she appeared to utilize more of a traditional approach that included identifying, testing, and recommending placement for the student. Furthermore, the school psychologist was more focused on assessing the student and recommending placement and career guidance with minimal interaction with the student.
The school psychologist stated that her goal was to work closely with the teacher of record and school counselor in order to help the student be prepared for life after high school. Therefore, it appeared that the school psychologists was interested in finding out all the intricate details regarding the student in order to help get a “whole picture” look at what was occurring.
