Recently there have been many school shootings throughout the United States and the world. Most of these shooting were all connected with the shooter being on anti-depressant medications. In an article called “Medicated to death: by SSRI’s and mass killings” by Lisa Arbercheski, she writes that SSRI’s are linked to the cause of most shootings. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) is one of the most popular medications taken for depression in many countries. Some are known by their popular names like Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, and Paxil. These medications have many tests done and none of them prove that they cure depression or mood swings. Could these medications be connected to some of the most recent shootings like the one in Newton, Connecticut? The case is that these medications are causing adolescents to go on suicidal rampage shootings and the United States is trying to play it off like the medications have no connection. Many of these young people committing these crimes are doing it because there is some type of rejection in their life. Doctors try to alleviate there symptoms by giving them higher doses of medication making it worse. In the article by Arbercheski she describes a shooting on December of 2000 when Micheal McDermott went on a shooting rampage at his workplace. It was determined during his trial that he had increased his antidepressant medication, Prozac, from 70 milligrams to 210 milligrams per day. There was also two other recent cases where
Emotional wellness issues have been frequently shown another big cause of these shootings. Most school shooters were mentally sick or demonstrated side effects of psychological wellness issues. An opportunity for mental and psychiatric help could help stop these shootings. According to newyorker.com, ¨, from 2011 and 2013, more people believe that mass shootings result from a failure of the mental-health system than from easy access to guns. Eighty per cent of the population believes that mental illness is at least partially to
The Columbine High School Shooting allowed for us to see flaws within our police force. Throughout the Columbine shooting, there were many errors made by police. The police didn’t know the killers were dead, so they looked all throughout the school for bombs. They also feared that “the fallen bodies had been booby-trapped with explosives” (CITE), making them move slowly. These missed calculations impacted the lives of many. Dave Sanders, one of the teacher fatally injured, was in the science room bleeding out. The police knew this but didn’t arrive “until nearly 3 pm. When they arrived, they found more than fifty students with Sanders, who was barely clinging to life. A paramedic tried to stop his bleeding, but it was too late. Sanders died
The mass shooting has become a big issue in the United States. After shootings like the one that happened in Newtown, Connecticut all Americans come together to look for ways to actually prevent mass shootings to happened. “Mass shootings are defined as the killing of four or more victims Rates of Mass shootings have risen dramatically in the last few years. Since 2006, there have been more than 200 mass killing in the United States.” (Usatoday.com) Due to the big increase in mass shootings a question is still debatable. Are these mass shootings due to environmental factors or genetics?
In the United States of America the right to bear arms gave birth to a phenomenon called the “gun culture,” the term coined in 1970 by a historian Richard Hofstadter, which describes America’s heritage and affection for weapons(1). Not only did gun culture become an inseparable part of American democracy, but also it is considered to be synonymous with independence and freedom, the most important values for American society. Even though the crime rate and murder rate in the U.S. is higher than in any other developed country, U.S. citizens oppose every attempt made to pass gun control legislation(2). However, it may sound like a paradox, but the crime level in the most liberal states, when it comes to gun ownership, is the lowest in the
In this past year alone there have been 23 shootings on college campuses, not including incidents that have occurred at other grade level schools. Innocent students and teachers have been injured or killed in each of these shootings. School shootings are not restricted to one geographic area; they are spread across the United States, from Arizona to Florida to every thing in between. There is no way to tell when or where events like this will occur, so many wonder how to prevent traumatic events like this. In the United States all 50 states have passed laws to allow concealed carry, but only under certain restrictions and mandates.
“A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined. ” -George Washington. School shootings have come to the forefront of our thought, especially in recent years, and people across the country are seeking the best way prevent future incidents. On one side you have those that believe more strict gun control laws and a higher presence of gun free zones is the optimum solution. This argument can be supported by the article "More Guns on Campuses Won’t Make People Safer, Researchers Say" By Jon Schuppe, where he quotes researchers from John Hopkins university stating that "Increasing gun availability in campus environments could make far more common acts of aggression, recklessness or self-harm more deadly and, thus, have a deleterious impact
Horror filled events capture the eyes of television viewers across America each day. Many of these tragic incidents broadcasted involve the use of guns. “That could never happen in my school.” This is one of the first thoughts that goes through a students mind when they hear about a school shooting. The fact is though, it can. School shootings can happen at any school at any time. Lack of security is only a small part of the problem. The major issue lies in the low morality of students and warning signs overlooked by administration.
In the United States, we are experiencing more mass shootings in schools with many kids and adults dying because of ineffective laws and lawmakers stating that “guns protect peoples”, because of this we should protect ourselves with more gun regulations then deadly guns .One of these problem with self defence is that people who arm themselves could accidentally kill a loved one by either not knowing how to fire a gun or mistaken the person for a intruder. Another problem is of having guns around homes, where it can a initiated a conflict between peoples and either factions could say that they were using it for self defense. In contrast, if we have gun control laws there will be fewer mass shootings/deaths and it will make the U.S.
The first school took place on July 26th, 1764. 4 Lenape Native Americans went into a school house and killed the school master and 9 to 10 kids. Now this may not take place is modern times but this is the first instance of one or multiple people to target a school in the United States, as a way of expressing aggression. This coincided with the Pontiac rebellion which was brought on by Native Americans disapproval of British post war policies after the French Indian war. Reports vary on the motive or people involved. This event is exceeding important to new findings and case studies done because it does not fit in to the normal characteristics of a “school shooting.” Though it took place in a school and involved some form of aggression or disgruntlement
A school shooting occurred on February 14, 2018. The shooter is 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz. Cruz had planned this for a while. A man by the name of Peter Langman; a psychologist who has been studying the behavior of school shooters for years now has collected many journals, suicide and homicide notes written by school shooters in the past on his website “School Shooters. Info”. A lot of the writings have things in common. Some talk about being bullied or picked on at school and how their lives at home are. Others plan out their attacks then later discuss how their attack went in letters to publishers. Almost all of them have a plan for how they are going to attack and who they plan to murder. Others just write out their feelings or how their life is going. Reading through some of the journals it is obvious that these kids are mentally disturbed. The journals themselves are warning signs of a murderer and should have been addressed by the parents.
Flooding every major media outlet making headlines across the country are school shootings, it shook the nation when twenty, first graders and six adults were killed by Adam Lanza, a twenty year old man who shot his mother in the head before taking her car and driving to Sandy Hook Elementary. Other school shooting have occurred since then and it brought up the issue of gun control, some politicians even supported the idea of giving teachers guns to have in the classroom. I am against allowing teachers to have guns in the classroom in the name of protection and security.
Though the causes of the nation’s rise in school shootings is scary to consider, but it is a harsh reality Americans face every day. In many cases of school shootings, antidepressants are involved. Antidepressants are included in a class of drugs classified as SSRIs, short for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These SSRIs are associated with psychotic reactions and
Statistics show that 53% of school shootings take place in K-12, while the other 47% take place in college or university campuses. In April of 1999, two boys shot up their school, injuring and murdering many of their fellow classmates. The horrific attack made on the school is now known and referred to as Columbine, the largest school massacre of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. The most explored question in a situation like this has to be why they did what they did and what drove them to do it. Although both Dylan and Eric were mentally disturbed, Dylan was more of a sociopath, compared to his psychopath counterpart, Eric. Dylan more or less loathed in depression while Eric loathed in destruction. Dylan was insecure about himself and thought that eventually all his friends will abandon him. Dylan thought that the only person that wasn’t going to leave him was his brother but when his brother got kicked out of their house for doing drugs, Dylan felt even more lonely. He also had a journal that talked about how he compensated suicide a time or two, how he didn’t believe in God’s decisions and how he was severely depressed. “‘I get more depressed with each day,’ he complained. Why did friends keep deserting him? They did not, actually, but Dylan perceived it that way. He fretted about Eric dumping him, too. ‘Wanna die,’ he repeated. Death equaled freedom npw; death offered tranquility….. Then he weighed the other option: He named a friend and said he ‘will get me a gun, ill go
