Dropouts, suicide, depression, and pressure have become more common since mid-2000. Starting school later will help students get out of all those dangers. National Sleep Foundation (NSP) recommends that students should sleep at least 9 hours a day. But due to having to wake up early on weekdays, they get less sleep than their body needs. It is natural for a teen to go to bed later in the night, and wake up later in the morning (School Start Time and Sleep). As schools start earlier and earlier the past years, many students who ride the bus to school are usually late for their bus. Several studies show that most high school students are at a disadvantaged group of sleep due to extracurricular activities, work, homework, social life, family, and school starting early. An average teen needs eight to ten hours of siesta daily; however, most high schoolers only get about seven or fewer hours of sleep. In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended that high schoolers and middle schoolers should start school after 8:30 AM at least (Walker).
Since almost every school in the United States starts school before 8:30, there are many who argue that they should start later. The time suggested by the schools goes against a high schooler 's biological clock, leaving most teens going to sleep around 11 and waking up at an average time of 5:30; a mere 6 ½ hours of sleep is achieved with this time frame, 3 hours less than what has been recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (Maloney-Dunn). In the article “Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later For Teens’ Health” it states,“...... a National Sleep Foundation poll found that 59 percent of middle schoolers and 87 percent of high schoolers are getting less than the recommended 8 ½ to 9 ½ hours of sleep a night. ”(Shute 2). Many people say that school start time is affecting students’ health.

This shows that school start to early, schools need to start later and need to be supported by the community!
Did you know nearly 10% of U.S. schools currently start before 7:30, 40% start school before 8 a.m., and only about 15% start after 8:30. Bus pick-ups start shortly after 5:30 a.m. in some districts, and teens must wake up at 5 or 6 a.m. to get to school on time. Meanwhile, the school day ends earlier. We must start caring because if these students grades start to decrease and their test scores will start getting worse in their morning classes. Studies show that if the brain is active in the morning it increases every learning abilities.
We all would love to sleep a few more minutes, but we know we shouldn’t… Or should we? Getting enough sleep on school nights can have positive effects on education. Many school related things could benefit off of later start schedules such as the grades of students. Bad things happen when you don’t get enough sleep.
Should Schools Start Later Recently, children have been attending school 7:00 to 8:00 in the morning. However, some schools are debating over whether or not schools should start earlier or later. On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has
