Science Test- Paper Towels

In this lab, three different brands of paper towel were tested to see which brand could absorb the most water. The brands that were tested were Bounty, Sparkle, and the Dutch Fork High School paper towels. To understand which paper towel would be the most absorbent one must know what makes paper towels absorbent in the first place. Studies show that, “Paper towels are made up of cellulose fibers, which also make up cotton, wood, and most other plants. These cellulose fibers are actually giant molecules that consist of many small molecules linked together. When you come to the paper towel aisle in the grocery store do you ever get frustrated and annoyed by all the brands to choose from? Every brand is telling you that they are the strongest and that their brand will absorb the fastest. Have you ever actually taken the time to figure out which brand is indomitable and absorbs the quickest? Well today I will fill you in on this mysterious secret and tell you not only which brand is not lying to you but also which brand you are getting your money’s worth and if paying that extra dollar is worth the name brand I think that the most expensive paper towel will be the strongest based on an ice cube suspended over a paper towel over a bowl held by a rubber band.

Bounty Paper Towels, known as the “The quicker picker upper” started in 1957 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are known as the quicker picker upper because they are so absorbent because of the pattern they have and also because they are 2-ply which makes them thicker and more absorbent. At the time, other brands were promoting how strong they were and how soft they were but did not really ever say much about how absorbent they were. After research they discovered that really all customers cared about was how much they absorbed, so that is what they started promoting. Paper towel C was 15 by 28 centimeters. Scissors were obtained and each paper towel was cut to 13.5 by 15 centimeters. The weight of the three paper towels at this size was 0.9 grams dry for paper towel A, paper towel B weighed 0.8 grams dry, and paper towel C weighed 1.2 grams. Three beakers weighing 12.2 grams each were obtained. Each beaker was filled with 100ml of water with the outcome of them weighing 128.1 grams each. The weight of each paper towel dry was deducted from the weight of each paper towel. Paper towel A was left to soak for seven seconds.

Absorbency affects: skin comfort, static build-up, dimensional stability in water, stain removal, water repellency, and wrinkle recovery.

The ending result of this experiment confirms that as five test tubes are lined up with the varying level of absorbance, different results in the level of absorbance will appear as well, this is visible in above table. My science fair topic is “Which beverage stains your teeth the most?” and I chose that topic because my family drinks a lot of different beverages and we disagree on which drinks stain your teeth. The main question that I am attempting to answer is which beverage coffee, tea, soda, or grape juice stain your teeth the most. To do this, I plan to test each beverage on egg shells for five days.
