Distinguishing science from non-science or religion is generally an easy matter, as the two rarely seem to make claims to be scientific. When they do make claims of being scientific, this becomes known as pseudoscience. Even so, it is useful to recognize the distinctions, as science doesn’t always clearly do so. For the boundary between science and religion, a majority of the cases can be separated well through the verificationistic view. While empirical matters are primarily dealt with science, spiritual matters are primarily dealt with religion because they cannot be objectively and empirically observed.
When distinguishing science from non-science, it’s easiest to start by defining the fundamentals that make up what science is, and then define all of the fields that fall outside this definition as non-science. At it core, science is a system of acquiring knowledge about the physical world through objective experimentation and observation. Therefore, fields that do not involve the acquisition of knowledge, such as art and business, can be classified as being non-science. Moreover, mathematics is a field considered to be non-science because doesn’t acquire knowledge about the physical world. The field of engineering proves to be an interesting case. While engineers practically apply scientific knowledge, the field as a whole is non-scientific.

The scientific ideas of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries overturned many of the most fundamental ideas of the medieval worldview. New knowledge of the physical world provided occasions for challenging the authority of the church and of scripture. The new ideas then began to displace and reshape religious models of thought. Even though the scientific revolution exposed humankind to the truths of the world, the new science posed a potential challenge to religion.
Within philosophy, there has long been a question about the relationship between science and religion. These two systems of human experience have undoubtedly had a lot of influence in the course of mankind’s development. The philosopher Ian Barbour created a taxonomy regarding science and religion that has become widely influential. His taxonomy postulates that there are four ways in which science and religion are thought to interact. The four categories are: conflict, independence, dialogue, and integration. By using articles from a select few philosophers, theologians, and scientists, it is clear to see the ways in which these two systems of human experience are categorized in the four categories presented by Ian barbour. However, it will be apparent that the category of conflict may be seen as the most dominant in regard to the interaction between science and religion.
When comparing science and religion there has been a great rift. As long as humanity has believed in a creator there as always been thinkers trying to quantify and evaluate the truth behind religion, trying to disprove or prove a supernatural force.

The word science comes from the latin word scientia meaning knowledge, which is the condition or fact of being aware of something. Knowledge could be attained through various ways. It could be familiarity, gained through experience or learned through observation using one’s given senses. It could also be attained through cognitive reasoning, as coming to a conclusion. Consequently, the range of one knowledge varies and is tested through various types of examinations.Nevertheless, having knowledge does not mean that knowledge is true. Two individuals may observe the same thing but may come to two different conclusions., depending on their perspective. Then who is to say which one is right. That is when science comes in, it is a systematic process of examining a deduction or an infere from an observation.
As people, we come with earlier knowledge and understandings on subjects and topics of study, “Science” being one of them. We make presumptions, based on either reasonable evidence or that our thoughts and ideas are known as true by others. Through this we have come to understand and define science as its aims, leaving its definition, whether consciously or unconsciously, unchallenged. We have taken advantage of the label that we have set for science, as well as its goals, and failed to look at them further.
