Eastern, Central, and Southern Kingdoms A growing number of Arab Muslim traders began settling on the Indian Ocean coast in around 1100. Some city-states like Kilwa, Mogadiscio, Sofala, and Mombasa came to be from this trade. Everyone that lived in these city-states spoke the language Swahili. Whether you are referring to early Israel in the Bible, the transatlantic trade during the 1600s, modern times, slavery has found a way to rear its ugly head in one way or another. It would appear that a person being a chattel to another person, as Merriam-Webster defines slavery, has been around for practically an eternity. Not only has it been –and still is –present, but slavery has been worldwide. No matter what type of slavery –forced labor, debt labor, sex slavery, or child slavery- the topic has proven to be very controversial in history. For American history in particular, slavery is one reason the Civil War began in 1861. In addition to the Civil War, multiple court cases have risen from this culture of forced labor. Cases like
From 600 to 1450 CE, trade thrived through the Indian Ocean trade routes. Large and powerful states provided security for merchants and travelers, allowing them to follow these routes with ease. While the spread of goods and ideas along the Indian Ocean trade routes remained constant, the states controlling them changed, leading to the creation of new states and the addition of European participation in this network.
WH9 Kaulike Jansen Africa DBQ January 6, 2016 Before the Europeans arrived to the empires, kingdoms, and cities of Africa, the African civilization flourished in many achievements with Art, political status, trade, and culture. The Africa we know today is not like the Africa we knew before the Europeans arrived in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Africa traders have used their skills to trade with other lands. Beautiful cities were built with an advanced political structure like the city of Kilwa. They even maintained a thriving culture.
We as a world together have been through a lot of changes and made a lot of advances over the past couple of centuries. Many have argued about the outcome of the European expansion on the Americas. Some people feel that the Europeans had both a positive and negative impact on the expansion; however, the negative impact gave a devastating result, which would continue to change history for almost four hundred years. The Europeans were manipulative towards to indigenous people of the Americas. They exploited them, using them as their personal slaves. Most importantly, they silently murdered the Natives by introducing them to diseases such as the measles and smallpox. Consequently, a small pox epidemic was caused, which resulted in the
From 650 CE to 1750 CE, there were many changes and continuities in the commerce of the Indian Ocean region. One major continuity in the commerce of the Indian Ocean was the emergence and use of the same trade routes for both imports and exports of goods such as gold and ivory. One major change was how the commerce of the Indian Ocean prospered economically. The commerce of the Indian Ocean developed rapidly, and the trade incorporated places such as East Africa, the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and India. Another major change was the increased involvement of the Europeans in the Indian Ocean commerce shortly after discovering it.
The ports on the Indian Ocean were very diverse with cultures and ethnicities of merchants who were there. Though cultural influence spread more than the silk roads as southeast Asian kingdoms were great influences. Islam had spread as merchants who were not a part of it adapted into it. This was because Hindu traders who had converted into the religion brought their culture and the religion along with them during their trade. As for the silk roads, during the Tang-Abbasid period, jew merchants had their artwork influenced by the Chinese. When the Mongols were in control, civilized cultures absorbed the Mongols culture. Unlike the silk roads, the Indian Ocean had more influence than its land competitor. Though when it came to goods, both routes had the benefits for

People have continued to settle on the shores of the Persian Gulf for over 7,000 years despite the fact that it is one of the harshest enviromental regions in the world. The Gulf lack of natural resources is compensated for by the wealth of fine pearls that can be found. However, the creation of artificial pearls forced many in the industry to go out of business. The region is now known most prominently for its production of oil.
The current global security climate is one of unease and uncertainty. An aggressive Russia, an unsettled Middle East, and a resurgent China all pose threats to American national interests. The Islamic State undoubtedly invokes the greatest amount of fear in the hearts of the world, but it may be the rise of China that truly tests American resolve. The China Sea is of extreme economic, political and military importance to the United States. This is evident from the Obama administration’s strategic “pivot” to Asia, the recent Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the U.S.S Lassen challenging China’s territorial claims to the Spratley Islands. America’s security guarantees in the region also include some of the oldest and most valuable
As I young child, I wanted to be a fisherman that plays the piano because I have always loved playing music and being in the water. I still have a clear image of the first boat ride I had when I was a young as I was heading to Jeju Island in the South Korea; the wind going through my hair, the seagulls flying over my head, and the rough water whipping the boat around. I’ve grown to know that becoming a fisherman that plays the piano is an impractical career to strive for, however my fascination for the sea has not changed and being out in the ocean has always been a dream of mine since I was a child and I believe that Massachusetts Maritime Academy will put me on the trajectory to help me prepare for my career. Massachusetts Maritime Academy provides the right program and environment for the
The Portuguese were the first group of Europeans to arrive in Japan. Contact between the Japanese and Portuguese marked the first interaction with Europe. According to historical accounts, Portuguese traders arrived at Tanegashima, a small island in southern Kyūshū, on a Chinese ship in 1543. Two years later, in 1545, the Portuguese arrived to establish trade and brought with them: weapons such as the harquebus and cannon; books such as medicine and science; raw materials such as wool and tobacco; and so forth. After this encounter, trade relations between the two countries flourished in a period known as the Nanban (Southern Barbarian) trade (Numata, 1956; Hall, 1970; Matsuda, 1982; Beasley, 1999; Jansen, 2000; Lidin, 2002; Totman, 2005; Walker,
The trade and migration from the Swahili coast during the nineteenth century emerged from the spread of language. Swahili language originated from an African origin (Bantu). It uses words from other languages, such as Arabic. This developed by two different cultural groups, Bantu and Arabic, interacting, living, and trading with each other. The civilizations of the African east coast “Swahili” reflects a hybrid name of the civilizations. After being influence by Islam’s, the Swahili coast civilization started on the seaboard and offshore islands. While at sea, Strayer mentioned that the Swahili citizens had begun to develop cosmopolitan contacts with trading partners like Arabia, Persia, India, and China. After incorporating new faith and indigenous ways, developed a diverse population. The Islamic overlay benefitted highly from the long-distance commerce that Swahili was presenting. While the religious spread had begun, the faith headed eastward to India and Indonesia to set up a religious bond of trust and law that would ease trade. Swahili commerce introduced Chinese artifacts and culture as well as Indian culture. Whereas, Arabs and Persians were significant players in developing the Swahili civilization, by ruling from a noble class that was African in origin (a mixture Persian or Arab
