The invention of automobiles is definitely a groundbreaking and impactful technology in the society. The convenience it has brought to the lives of the public cannot be overestimated. Nevertheless, the disadvantages of this invention is proportional to its advantages. Many deaths have occurred as a result of automobile accidents (CDC, 2015). During head-on-collisions, there is a high possibility of unrestrained passengers bumping their heads and chest with steering wheels or being ejected through the windscreen of the vehicle, thus, resulting in severe injuries or death (Nordhoff 2005b). The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) recorded about 51100 automobile-related deaths in 1979 with ejection from the vehicle being one of the leading …show more content…
However, the use of seatbelt has contributed significantly in lowering death rates in automobile crashes, reducing the risk of death and serious injury by 50% (NHTSA, 2010). Seatbelts have been present in cars since the 1950s, but a large number of vehicle drivers did not use it while driving (Prevention Institute, 2002). Insurance companies such as Allstate and government agencies conducted interventions to educate the public about the consequences of not using seatbelts (Dinh-Zarr et.al. 2001). However, the awareness campaigns did not yield the complete desired results of all passengers in vehicles using seat belts.
As a result of the huge public health and safety issues that arose from the use of vehicles, in 1968, the government and policymakers enacted laws that enforce the use of seatbelts in order to mitigate the dangers associated with car accidents. Despite the good intentions of the government in ensuring public safety, there were many oppositions to the enforcement of seat belts (Dinh-Zarr et.al. 2001). Many of the oppositions were based on the beliefs that the use of seatbelts was not effective in preventing car accident injuries. Many also reported that using seatbelt was uncomfortable (Morelock et.al.
Dana Maliepaard was a young girl who went to Glasgow High School and was involved in an unrestrained car accident. Dana’s mother, Christie Maliepaard, believes that it is necessary to share Dana’s story with others so that they may learn from it. Dana’s story is used to show teen drivers that it is not only expected, but necessary to wear a seat belt. By wearing a seat belt when driving a car or riding in one, you are able to not only save your own life, but the ones of the people who care about you.
Every day millions of people around the United States commute daily to work, and to run their errands. In almost every state in the United States, wearing a seatbelt is required. Many people ask why they should have to wear a seatbelt in their private vehicles, while others agree that everybody definitely should wear their seatbelt. Should the government be able to create and enforce this laws such as this one on the public? This paper will discuss the seatbelt law, the views of philosophers Thomas Hobbes, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and whether or not this law is ethical.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “in 2015, seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 13,941 lives” (1). The NHTSA goes on to say that almost 30 million Americans still don’t use seat belts on a daily basis. Since vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of death in the United States and even the world, the argument to improve seat belt technology has increased dramatically. Researchers are often more concerned with whether or not people are wearing their seat belts, not the effectiveness of them, until now, although both are incredibly important. Seat belt safety, which is directly related to seat belt technology, has been shown to be increasingly ineffective because of the high severity
The law should require people to wear seat belts because it prevents people from getting injured or killed in car accidents. Seat belts dramatically reduce the risk of death and serious injuries every day. 53% of the people who have died in car accidents were not wearing a seat belt. Many people that
For the people who use the excuse that "They are just going around the corner" should realize that 80% of traffic fatalities occur within a 25-mile radius of your home and at a speed of 40 miles an hour. Buckling up to drive around the block is probably the best time to do so. Everyone knows that car crashes can cause death; yet because people do not buckle up all the time thousands of people still die in traffic crashes yearly. Seatbelts can save your life in a crash and can reduce your risk of a serious injury. Seat belts keep drivers and passengers from being ejected through windows or doors. This is important because your chances of being killed are five times greater if you are thrown from the vehicle. Thousands of people who die in car crashes each year might still be alive today if they had only been wearing their seat belts.
Seatbelts is an excellent topic to write about for essay number two. I agree with you that seatbelts will drastically increase ones chances of surviving a car accident. One could argue though that seatbelts can also kill you in a car accident. While I myself know it to be true, that the odds of surviving while wearing a seatbelt compared to not are extremely high, not everyone knows that. A lot of people hear stories of freak cases in which people died wearing seatbelts, and use this as a reason not to wear a seatbelt. Statistically speaking, more people survive if they are wearing a seatbelt than if they are not. I know quite a few states have seatbelt laws in place such as the click it or ticket campaign, do you agree with this?
Sylvania community needs seatbelts on buses for safety of the children. My first piece of evidence is a quote said by one of harry duns family members "From a safety point of view we should be spending money on making it safe around the bus ... 92 per cent of all bus incidents happen with children going to and around the bus.” The first text evidence supports my reason of safety by showing why seatbelts are important and really affect people that lose a loved one just because there wasn't enough safety when there could have been. According to the website family education, wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45%, and risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50%.
When you first get into your car, what is the first thing you do? Turn the car on? Put the music on? Adjust your mirrors? What about wearing your seat belt? Your seat belt is the one component that will keep you safe while you are driving or if you are in an accident. Many people today seem to take seat belts for granted. Most people believe it is the only the driver and passenger`s obligation to wear a seatbelt and no one else has to wear them. Everyone no matter who they are should always wear a seatbelt and there has to be action taken in regards to this matter. The federal government should regulate seatbelt usage by legislating a universal law which requires all passengers to wear a seat belts, creating substantial fines for each passenger
In 2016, 3,773 people died in a motor vehicle traffic accident and of that 3,773, 43.71% were reported not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred. The “Click it or Ticket” slogan was made to encourage drivers to wear seatbelts, but it’s impossible to pull over every single person that isn’t wearing
An enormous division currently exists between the people who believe that automobile safety should be an option and those that feel it must be a requirement. The federal government feels the morally obligated to create the safest driving environment possible. On the other end of the spectrum, opinions exist that the average driver has ability to make the choice of safety on their own. Editorials, political assemblies, debates, and conversations have arrived on the concept of click it or ticket. This idea refers to ticketing any motor vehicle driver and passenger that is not fastened by a seat belt. Arguments have been made for both sides, and have been reviewed in multiple states.
One of them being if a crash occurs, it will reduce the probability of death and severity of injustices. Seat belts also improve behavior and reduce driver distractions. The NHSTA states that seat belts have no value in most of fatal accidents. That there is no guarantee that once installed students will use them. They also state that ONLY six passengers die each year in school bus crashes. That doesn’t seem like a big number. Unless you are the parent to one of those six children. (School Bus
Recently the news has been full of school bus accidents where children have been seriously injured or killed. Those who are for seat belts in school buses are adamant that the devices will prevent serious injury
Judge Oliver ruled that, sincethe belts contributed to public safety, they could not be considered unconstitutional.consequently, People think that wearing a seatbelt or not, it doesn’t change the numberof casualties from wrecks but let me tell you why that’s not true. Despite the best effortsof law enforcement and others to educate people about the importance and benefits ofwearing a seatbelt, many still do not.(Hurst). According to the Center for DiseaseControl wearing a seatbelt is the most efficient way to save lives and reduce injuries incar crashes. Considering car crashes are the leading cause of death among thosebetween the ages of 5 and 34, you could say wearing a seat belt is the most
Preview of main points: First I will describe you the problems of not using a seat belt, then I will give some solutions according to my point of view and my research and Finally I will talk
The main concern in motor accidents are injuries and deaths. Wearing a seat belt decreases your chance of serious injury and death by about half. They also saved 12,802 people in 2014 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Seat belts keep you safe by keeping you from being ejected from the vehicle, restrains the body’s strong points, lessens the forces felt by the body, slows body, and protects your head and neck (Orenstein). They play an important role in keeping you safe from injury and death.
