Securing the homeland and its borders is the United States first priority and it is important to successfully to executing the goal of the Department of Homeland Security. It is critical to understand DHS is the leading federal agency for protecting the Homeland Security. With this paradigm in mind, this paper will show how Undocumented and legal immigration affects the U.S. economy and how Department of Homeland Security protects the border from, undocumented immigrants, Drug Dealers, illegal weapons and contraband. I will also explain the importance of U.S. Customs and law enforcement role in the Department of Homeland Security.

The independent Center for Immigration Studies said, “in January 2000 there were 7 million illegal aliens living in the United States and the center estimated that number to grow by half a million a year” (Peak, 2009, pg. 245). In order for the Department of Homeland Security to protect the border from, undocumented immigrants, Drug Dealers, illegal weapons and contraband entering the United States, they collaborate with U.S. Customs and Law enforcement to protect the boarder.
The U.S. Customs and Law enforcement who is within the Department of Homeland Security is challenge with investigations for things such as, illegal drugs which crosses the border and to combat any illegal entries or alien smuggling at the border. Their focus is to protect the U.S. border, which has been in place by Department of Homeland Security ever since September 11, terrorist attack. In order for departments such as U.S. Customs and Law enforcement to help prevent such illegal entries of illegal aliens into the United States they to work together with the other departments within the Department of Homeland Security to facilitate the flow of legal immigration and goods through the U.S. border while deterring those who are undocumented from crossing the border.
