Border Patrol Essay

In our past history, The United States Customs and border officials have been focused on relatively common matters of enforcing laws regarding trade and immigration, watching over agriculture and economic interests from pest and disease, and processing people, vehicles and goods. After the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, the primary concern was the homeland security. The threat of terrorists and terrorist tools coming through our borders all add to an increased set of dangers to The United States. Is it the responsibility of our United States Military to defend our country from these threats? The following myths are often understood as true, when in fact they are not.

Ever since the tragedy of 9/11 events, the U.S government has attempted to increase its security for the border against immigration. They have extend the number of Patrols, surveillance camera systems, and wall of fences.

The United States Border Patrol has a mission and duty to protect our borders through regulating laws and preventing illegal terrorists, drugs, and weapons from entering the United States. This has been a clear goal ever since laws have been passed to help secure our borders back in 1924. The need for Border Patrol and the demand for tighter security plans have been increasing due to terrorist attacks on American soil, the presence of radical groups, and a high rate of crime in the United States. The big idea here is that as crime continues to develop so will our border securities. I would like to primarily focus on the current role of the Border Patrol versus what it might have been in years past. Many tragedies have occurred in recent times more than what was experienced years ago. The United States has suffered throughout the year 2000 and continues to suffer from severe threats to the nation. It only makes sense to make changes and tighten our borders in order to help prevent the ongoing crimes. If the Border Patrol does this than the individuals living in this nation will live in a better and much safer environment. Along with their current role, the research on the Border Patrol’s changes that either have hindered their work or made them more effective will be looked into as well.

Illegal immigrants have always been a problem in the United States for some time now. “In October 2008, the illegal immigrant population stood at 11.9 million according to the Pew Hispanic Center” ("Illegal Immigration Facts & Statistics”). An efficient border patrol in our country would be a good step in the right direction to stop illegal immigration and the effect it has on our country. Illegal immigrants are at fault for such things as smuggling drugs into the country, which increases crime rate. Illegal immigrants also deprive U.S. citizens’ from the lower and middle class of jobs. America will also lose money on taxes and schools lose funds in most public systems

In “The Border Patrol State” Leslie Silko makes accusations of the border patrol’s mistreatment of American citizens of Mexican decent, making the argument with almost evidence. Silko, a critically acclaimed poet, sees the border patrol as a governmental assembly addicted to interrogation, torture, and the murder of those they see fit.

US Custom Border Protection (CBP) is an agency/department of The Department of Homeland Security that perform inspections in border and ports of entry. CBP officers and agents welcome all legitimate travelers and trade while preventing the entry of terrorists and their weapons. CBP law enforcement professionals enforce U.S. law, stopping narcotics, agricultural pests and smuggled goods from entering the country. They also identify and arrest travelers

By placing the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), immigration is considered a national security issue by default. Whether or not the issue is treated seriously is up for debate, as the situation constantly is an issue in media and in political campaigns. However, border fences have been increased as well and the amount of agents with CBP (Andreas, 2009).

The U.S. Border Patrol started its service for our nation in 1924. Even though some changes have affected every aspect of the operations from its early days, the values, professionalism, honor, integrity, and respect helped shape the Border Patrol from the early years and they still remain the same today. Since the very beginning agents have been patrolling our borders, “Mounted watchmen of the U.S. Immigration Service patrolled the border in an effort to prevent illegal crossings as early as 1904” (Border Patrol History, web). The agent’s efforts were undertaken only when resources permitted. The inspectors were all out of El Paso, Texas, “Though they never totaled more than seventy-five, they patrolled as far west as California trying to restrict the flow of illegal Chinese immigration” (Border Patrol History, web).

A nation without borders is not a nation. Today, every country is putting efforts to secure its borders not only from terrorists and drugs smuggling, but also from the illegal immigration. All these recurring activities have sparked the United States to secure its borders against illegal immigrants and terrorism by creating a special department named the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS is headed by the Secretary of Homeland Security. After the terrorist attack of 9/11, terrorism and illegal immigration were two striking issues for the DHS. To solve these issues, the Department of Homeland Security further created two immigration enforcement agencies: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in year 2003. The United States has over seven-thousand miles of border to cover each day. The US shares its borders with Canada and Mexico. That’s why the CBP was established to safeguard our borders through the deployment of technology, personnel, and infrastructure. The US Border Patrol is the most visible of DHS’s agencies and is now touching majority of population than ever before. It has increased its strength to more than 21,000 agents, up from 8,500 in 2001and 4,000 in 1994(17). Immigration is a topic that has been argued many times in the United States. Many people support it while others believe that immigrants are criminals who commit the crime of entering the U.S. illegally. Roberto Rodriguez and Star Parker both use different styles of writing in “Border on our Backs” and “Se Habla Entitlement” respectively. Border patrol/immigration has become a huge topic in not only the United States government, but also to the everyday people. Not only has immigration and border security become a main issue in the last presidential election in 2016 it has also become a main topic for the safety of the citizens of the United States Of America. This is becoming a huge problem because currently there are “10 million illegal immigrants in the United States and this number is growing by 700,000 each year.” (Pearce, 1) Why are these numbers so high? The U.S. Customs and Law enforcement who is within the Department of Homeland Security is challenge with investigations for things such as, illegal drugs which crosses the border and to combat any illegal entries or alien smuggling at the border. Their focus is to protect the U.S. border, which has been in place by Department of Homeland Security ever since September 11, terrorist attack. In order for departments such as U.S. Customs and Law enforcement to help prevent such illegal entries of illegal aliens into the United States they to work together with the other departments within the Department of Homeland Security to facilitate the flow of legal immigration and goods through the U.S. border while deterring those who are undocumented from crossing the border.

The United States border stretches for thousands of miles of harsh desert and forest landscape, between two oceans, over lakes and rivers and deals with the highest amount of immigrant traffic in the world. The U.S. has one of the toughest jobs in dealing with border security and the other issues that arise from economic and political ramifications, to securing the land, sea and air borders from unwanted entry by illegals immigrants, terrorists and contraband. Due to all these aspects, these make it difficult for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to get a handle on securing our nations border. Securing the border from illegal entry falls under the jurisdiction of the Custom Border protection (CBP) and Border Patrol, which both agencies are under the large DHS umbrella. These agencies were both created to handle these types of problems and have increased its work force numbers after the 9/11 attacks. This is actually when the U.S. really started to look at borders and locking them down from unwanted entry. With the creation of the Department of Homeland Security in March of 2003, the increase in the amount of federal officers on the border has nearly doubled to the sum of over 17,000 (DHS.gov, 2017).

After doing some research, I found some information about a department that aids in illegal immigration. The department is called Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The goal of the department is to identify, investigate, and “take down” weaknesses within the United States. As I read further along in the article, they had actions or solutions to do so, whether this department created them or not, I do not know.
