SELF RESPECT “The worst loneliness is to not be comfortable with yourself.” – Mark Twain Self-respect is fundamental for a great life. If self-respect is lacking this may cause insecurity and the strive to be someone we are not. To develop self-respect means to cultivate the self-confidence to deal with whatever life throws at us. Self-respect comes from an inner belief and not an egoistic feeling of superiority. The following are some ways to improve self-respect:- • Learn to Handle Criticism – To maintain a sense of self-respect we need to learn how to deal with criticism and not take it personally, but to look at it from a detached perspective. Maybe it is false, in which case we should ignore it. If there is some truth we …show more content…
Even if things go badly, it is not necessary to lose self-respect. Work with the best intentions and gain self-respect from that. • Respect others – If we have no respect for others, how can we have self-respect? Self-respect means we have inner confidence and inner assurance, this is not a confidence or assurance built on superiority. It is the wrong approach to try and feel better by putting others down. If we look for the good qualities in other people it is easier to remember the good qualities in ourselves. • Look after your appearance – appearance is important, it can give us confidence or it can make us feel awkward. Dressing smart for the right occasion gives us self-confidence. Dress for your own benefit: don’t dress in the expectation of pleasing others and receiving compliments. • Be True to Yourself – There is great social pressure from parents, work and society to become a certain person and to achieve certain things – this pressure is hard to detach from. Self-respect comes from being true to our inner calling, to have faith in our own values and remember what is important to us. Everyone needs to follow their own path, even if others don’t respect our decision it is important that we do. Do we come into the world to please Tom, Dick and Harry or to live our own life? • Never hate yourself – We make mistakes, we do wrong things, but we should never put ourselves down unnecessarily. If we are not careful we start bitterly
Respect is something that we all want and it's a major aspect of esteem. Getting respect from people requires behaving like a respectful person. This means showing dedication to your career, your sobriety, and treating them with the respect they deserve.
It is important to allow someone to know that you respect them. It will ease the conversation and create trust. Behavior and attitude will allow the person demanding respect to feel that respect. When we respect each other, there are fewer conflicts. People get along easier and avoid the unnecessary drama associated with a lack of respect.
Everyone wants to be respected. It’s in our nature, but in order to obtain respect, first of all one has to respect oneself. Second, one has to show respect to others in order to gain respect from them. If one doesn’t show respect to someone, that person may often feel blown off and lose respect for you. Respect in my eyes is like a math equation loyalty plus duty equals respect. respect is gained in conducting ones self in a way that others can stand
* Respect. Respect each individual with the same respect as you would like to be respected.
Showing respect to someone means you act in a way that shows you care about their feelings and well-being. Showing respect for others include things like not calling people mean names, treating people with courtesy, caring enough about yourself that you don 't do things you know can hurt you. Respect must be earned, it cannot be ordered or demanded and, once gained, it can easily be destroyed. Respect can be something that is earned. Respect is often thought of as earned or built over time. Often, continued caring interactions are required to maintain or increase feelings of respect among individual
Self-respect is a difficult topic to define. It is often addressed and illustrated throughout fiction and history, yet the majority of people find it difficult to define in a way that isn’t shallow. Some might argue that self-respect is irrelevant and should not play a hand in the choices a person makes. Despite what others may say, it is an undeniable fact that individuals should always work to protect their personal pride. A person should always make decisions in an effort to maintain self-respect because it helps him to make good decisions in the future, preserve his own personal identity, and earn respect from those around him.
To have self-respect is to have a certain amount of audacity to show character and morals for oneself. The excerpt from Joan Didion’s, “On Self-Respect,” tells how characteristics like courage, responsibility and being strong is something you can gain and is insight into being raised a certain way. Didion’s thoughts on self-respect appear valid in comparison to my own thoughts on the subject of self-respect and how I perceive society in America.
In other cases respect is earned, and not given. What I mean by this is that, sometimes people must gain the respect of others. This can be earned in many ways, like being respectful of others, being the best you can be, and doing kind things for others. This respect can cause people to look up and follow in example of someone, and eventually making you an example for others to follow and look up to, on so on and so forth.
If you want others to give you respect, you must first learn how to give respect yourself. There is a lot of ways to respect a person or people, there are a lot of definitions to define respect: “To feel or show definite regard for; esteem. To avoid violation of or interference with: respect the speed limit. To relate or refer to; concern”. relation or reference, esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability, deference to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment, the condition of being esteemed or honored, a formal expression or gesture of greeting, esteem, or friendship, favor or partiality. Another one is to respect their rules, feelings, their personal space or bubble. There are many other forms of respect. Respect is created in many ways. It is created when people treat others as they want to be treated. So the growth of something, such as respect, often nourishes itself from its own process and dynamics. Being the first to accord respect, and with time, it will develop amongst all the conflicting parties. Avoid insulting people or how they feel about certain situations. Instead try to understand them. Many disastrous interactions are characterized by attitudes
Respect is holding something or someone in high regard. Respect has an impact on all aspects of my life, both personally and professionally. As a personal value, respect is twofold; I must respect everyone around me as well as respecting myself. I will demonstrate respect for others by treating everyone equally and without judgement. I will listen and be considerate of the opinions and values of others, regardless of conflicting opinions. I will respect myself by dressing modestly and not objectifying myself as a woman. I will not engage in any unethical behaviour that may compromise my personal morals and values.
Respect for yourself is very important to a person because it can be the balancing factor of your life. If a person has no respect for themselves the will most likely go into depression. Respecting yourself is also important for your self-esteem. Having a high self-esteem means that people
Respect shows the inner-self’s esteem of excellence to a person. Respect gives personality out to an adult or another person. Respect
There are many little things you can do to show respect. For example you can clean your room and set the dishes. You can raise your hand when some one else is talking when you have an opinion. Don’t be afraid to share your opinions and ideas. They can be a good example for someone. Be a person that another person would want to look up to. You can not be this person when you have a lack of respect.
This means to respect others as you would want them to respect you. If you ask someone for help and they concur, do not steal the credit for their work. On the other hand, if what they helped you with is unintentionally wrong, do not blame them or yell at them, as they were only trying to help you out. Never cut someone else down in front of others, yell at them or point out their bad qualities.
Respect is an important value to be taught when growing up. Through the years I have learned that in order to learn anything you must have respect for others. I have learned many valuable lessons from listening to my grandmother. She has told me many of her experiences, which has made me a better person. Having respect for other people has allowed me to be more open-minded and see qualities in people that most would not. I have always listened to what my friends and family has to say. That doesn’t always mean that I agree with them, but it is their opinion, so I respect it. In return I receive respect from them. As people begin to respect me more their trust in me also grows.
