For starters, reality programs such as Netflix's Making a Murderer, about the exoneration and then murder conviction of Steven Avery, HBO's The Jinx, about millionaire and possible serial killer Robert Durst, and Serial Season 1, about the case of convicted murderer Adnan Syed, it is clear that true crime shows are tantalizing to millions of people. If you spend any amount of time watching true crime TV, you will quickly notice that the shows almost always involve one particular type of crime: murder. Often, too, the focus is on exotic, bizarre and especially grisly or disturbing incidents of murder and the main type of eors m committing the murder, serial killers. Then the question comes up, what defines a serial killer? Suppose a gang member ends up shooting three people in street fights with members of other gangs over a ten-year period with plenty of cooling down periods. Strictly speaking, this gang member is a serial killer by the above definition, but he would not fit the common conception of what a serial killer is, a serial killer very commonly has a deviant sexual motive. Which is the part in movies and shows that are rarely shown, it pushes the boundary of what is entertainment to sickening. Unfortunately it's real though, and is one characteristic of a serial killer that truly defines them between other murders. The National Institute of Justice provides a definition of serial killing that is closer to the common conception. According to them, it involves “committing two or more murders with a psychological motive and sadistic sexual overtones”.
