Service learning is an important element of nursing education. It is not merely service which benefits the community, nor is it simply providing community health promotion. As the name suggests, service learning also facilitates student learning opportunities that differ from the classroom or clinical experience. The senior center group project was valuable, in that it allowed for the enhancement of personal health care knowledge, as well as the opportunity to share that knowledge with the older adult community.
The initial visit to the senior center involved assessments of blood pressure, blood glucose, oxygen saturation and heart rate. The participants were informed of their assessment values and encouraged to write them down. Many of the seniors asked questions related to what the numbers meant, if the values were within a healthy range and ultimately how they translated to daily living. Research shows that older adults are more likely to learn and retain new information that is perceived as relevant to their life, and should “include education with the explicit aim of enhancing active involvement of patients so that they become partners in their health care process” (Cooper, Booth, & Gill, 2003). It was evident that there was both a need and readiness for further education regarding the assessments. For this reason, we chose to teach about the health assessment results, including: target ranges, tips to achieve optimal levels, as well as how the numbers relate
The experience I encountered during the service learning project was great. Throughout the weeks allocated for the service learning project, I tutored grade two and three pupils from three different schools under two agencies. The names of the agencies are Lion Catcher and MLK Community Center. This project gave me the opportunity to work with little kids for a long time. This provided me with the privilege to help and work with people who are enthusiastic about learning. Through my colleagues and me, we were able to achieve the goal of the service learning project. One of the goals is to work with minorities who needs help. This goal does not benefit our clients only but us also, it helped us organize and improve the way we think about supporting our client and managed good clinical judgment.
A Service Learning project is one of the project requirements to complete the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through Ferris State University (FSU). My Service Learning experience was completed at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) in November, 2014. This paper includes details of the facility along with the contact information for the coordinator of the project. A description of my role as a volunteer, critical reflection of my experience, and a synthesis of the Service Learning are also included.
The service day on April 5th, really gave me a precious opportunity to have access to the life and health of immigrant persons from South America and their priorities in life as well as their consideration about health. This is my first time to help so many immigrant persons from South America check their blood pressure, height and body weight, and give them information about how to have access to free clinical and blood pressure control as well as weight management. I really thank Professor Raja, because it was she who gave us this precious experience to do service for and know this special population in USA.
The critical difference of service learning and the traditional learning style is that students are learning and addressing real needs in the community. Which connect students to the community through meaningful interactions with others, safety, and educational needs. This specific course includes readings, discussions, and activities to support
When I began my Civics class, thinking it potentially difficult and boring, I did not initially look forward to this project. However, as I did each activity, I found myself enjoying each and every one. From sitting in a board meeting to collecting trash, I discovered something new in all of the ways I volunteered. Not only did the people I volunteered for gain something through my service, but I feel that I gained a lot as well.
Another important skill for the senior nursing student is recognizing and implementing health promotion and wellness across all settings and ages (Stanley & Dougherty, 2010).
Service Learning is learning through experience to gain sociological observation, concepts, and theories so I decide to do my service learning hours in one of the two high schools that is part of the Oceanside Unified School District. The name of the school is called El Camino High School. El Camino High School is a high school that is located at 400 Rancho Del Oro Drive in Oceanside, California. It has over 3,000 students currently attending. The school’s mascot is the “Wildcat” and their colors are gold and red. El Camino High School is a public school that is part of a system of free public education that is maintained at a public expense for the education of students who are part of that community or district. El Camino High School is a place is a public school where students are coming out of middle school and are
This health promotion class does not have patient/participant outcome measures. The facilitators have yet to create a system that measures health outcomes within its participants. It is important for health promotion programs and classes to measure health outcome in order to identify areas that need improvement or adjustments. Nonetheless, the class believes it is effective since it is identifying older adults with hypertension.
The nursing diagnosis for this community would be “Knowledge deficit” related to lack of information regarding one’s illness, treatment therapy and/or self-care. The deficit of knowledge may also be related to lack of understanding or misinterpretation about the correlation of cardiac function, disease and deterioration. As a nurse who works on a cardiac unit, I have learned that a lot of senior patients have no idea what heart failure is, understand what causes or even know that they have been diagnosed as having the disease. Education about cardiac diseases and its overall health affects is very important for all age populations. However, from my experience the senior population are the ones that seem to be the most deficient in knowledge when it comes to cardiovascular
The meaning this service learning project provided me with was how important it is for us, the Hamline University, to build a meaningful relationship with Hamline Elementary. This was invoked because of the impact the students seemed to have due to us being there and working with them. The students were excited for a communal learning experience, and I think that is going to help encourage them to pursue a college career. Because I work at Hamline Elementary and have been doing so for the past 2 years, I have made strong connections with the students and faculty and think highly of them all. The experience was very similar to what I do at Hamline Elementary on a daily basis. Given this, I had a feeling that the content may have been a bit of
As a nurse, I have worked around the elderly for the last eight years, and before that I was a Certified Nursing Assistant for approximately 3 years. Over the years I have witness the end of many lives. I have seen residents pass with a multitude of family members and I have seen a resident pass with just a staff member holding their hand. I have been able to be a part of many lives and have witnessed how activities can make a great impact on these same lives. This is why I chose to complete my service learning project in a long term nursing facility to be a first-hand participant in these activities.
Through out my service-learning project there were different activities and sites my cousin and I visited in the community. The first site my cousin and I had our activity in was in my home in Boyle Heights, where we had a conversation about his diabetes and talked about his experiences with type1 diabetes as a teenager. I decided to choose my home as our first activity because it was the perfect place to ask my cousin to participate in my project and make him feel comfortable enough to share his experiences with me. The second activity we arranged was a lunch date at Outback Steakhouse in Glendale. Having lunch at a restaurant was my cousin’s idea because he wanted to show me how different and difficult it can be from eating a home made meal.
Patient education is fundamental in promoting health literacy. The health care professionals play a crucial role in educating the patients to improve their quality of life by identifying their learning needs, any learning barriers and adopting a teaching method that actively relays knowledge and promotes the active participation of the patient. Health literacy can be defined as the capacity of an individual to gain knowledge, process information, retain knowledge and apply it to life to promote health and wellbeing (Robinson, et al., 2011). Patient education requires the active participation of learners (Bastable, 2014). Managing chronic illness like Heart failure can be challenging for many patients as it requires modifying their behaviours, lifestyles and following a strict diet plan (Baptiste et al., 2014). This paper aims to explain and justify the principles and methods involved in the education session for a Chronic Heart Failure discharge patient. The secondary objective of this paper is to elaborate on the benefits of teaching a
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Service Learning Project (SLP) conducted at Southwest General Hospital on the CareView system. CareView is a patient monitoring system that includes cameras and sensors that are linked to a computer at the nurse's station which allows delivery of real-time visual monitoring around the clock. This SLP will focus on four key areas. Those areas are as follows: the establishment of the learning outcome of the SLP, the mechanics of the SLP, the community relationships resulting from
As a student, I have become more aware of the needs of my community. I have always worked at being active in my community to help those in need. Most of my volunteer work revolved around collecting donations and lending a helping hand at shelters. My volunteer work did not usually involve an academic base. I was not concerned with the ins and outs of why homelessness was a problem or the difficulty women faced finding assistance to escape abusive relationships. I just knew the shelters were always in need of donations and that is where I found myself helping most. In this paper, I will describe a personal experience I have had with service learning. I will also select one service learning idea from the National Student Nurses’ Association planning guideline that interests me and describe how this type of experience will enhance my nursing student experience.
