Throughout my senior year, I’ve talked to many college dropouts. In order to understand the perils of college, I turned to these people in order to truly understand what I need to avoid in my college career. Overall, many of them have said they weren’t able to deal with the stress of life and college. This was strange to hear due to the fact that these were people who I knew. People who I had seen excel in high school. However, I eventually realized why these people were unable to progress or move forward with their education. Many of these former students weren’t resilient enough to pick themselves of the ground after a setback. After this realization, I recognized that intelligence wasn’t the only requirement for college. The ability to be resilient in the face of adversity is also required. This year, June, I will become the first person in my family to graduate with an academic honors diploma. In June I will attend one of the best schools nationwide, Seton Hall University. Despite these accomplishments, I’m proud of the time I’ve dedicated to my community and extracurricular events. I’m proud of the placements and the letter I've received for Speech and Debate, the influential positions I’ve gained in Student Council, and my presidency of BPA. Ultimately, I’m proud that I destroyed the barriers of statistics and the perception that an apple doesn’t fall too far from a tree. Eight years ago, I had nothing but the clothes on my back and the car that I slept in for over a year. Today, I have defied the expectation of failure that statistics and society place on those who have experienced my background. Tomorrow, I will construct my legacy even more so than the one of today. With a deep passion in education in both learning and teaching others, I will plan to enrich the classroom experience. The college drop-out and failure rate in North America is unacceptably high and it’s becoming a huge problem. In fact, US News reports that “30% of college freshmen drop out after their first year of college” (Bowler 2). There are quite a few reasons students drop out of College. Whether it’s having a child or working two jobs, it’s hard for most students to balance college and life. Some of the main causes of dropping out include nontraditional situations, mental issues such as stress or anxiety, and lack of self-knowledge.
Gary Colombo, Robert Cullen, and Bonnie Lisle in their book “Rereading America” feel that commencing college is a very disturbing experience. So many things we have to deal while starting college, but the major challenges are expanded difficulty levels and higher expectation which we are not familiar over the years of high school. In order to solve this issue, we have to remodel ourselves by taking up the challenge and rethink about our strength and flaws. To succeed in college we need to be mentally strong and dedicated towards our goal.
She recalls the struggles, the fun, her failures and even her success in the end (Harding, 2011). The personal story shows the real road it takes with decisions we make “when entering college, Harding wrote that she began college because she felt it was expected of her”(Harding, 2011). College students often make choices based on what they perceive as pressure to do so by others like councilors, parents and even society. They enter college thinking this is what my plan should look like and not making choices that are the best for them. Harding said that in the end “ we all become graduates of one of the finest universities in the world- and already, nobody much cared how we got there”(Harding,2011). To me this shows that even if you pass by the skin of your teeth, you can still fail in the end. A diploma is not the end result that maters the most. Students need to choose colleges that appeal to their needs and goals and not just go to get a diploma. If students spend no time studying weather boarded or not liking their studies, then what difference does the diploma make in the end. Students would just have a degree that often goes unused in life but the costs is ever mounting to these students. Through the course Strategies for College Success Cpd 150 taught by Michelle Garland one can learn many things. Despite this course possibly being more helpful to others then it was to me it did still teach me multiple things. At the beginning of the course I had been dealing with relationship drama and figuring out how online college works, now halfway through the course the drama has subsided and I understand how online college works.I have learned that one of the most important factors of college success is determination. It is a person's ability to keep trying as hard as they can no matter what comes their way. I say this because college can be difficult and even seem pointless at times, but those who are determined enough to keep going, to keep trying, will eventually succeed. Although I am stubborn I have issues staying determined, I do generally accomplish what I need to. Another skill going along with determination is the ability to seperate the various areas of ones life. For example the ability to have a fight with your best friend then go to class and learn just fine. During my almost two years of high school, I have earned outstanding grades throughout the turbulence of attending different schools in two different countries. Freshman year was a transition across the United States from the West to East Coast. However, even in the midst of struggling in a drastically new environment, I maintained a 4.0 GPA and received High Honors all four quarters. This year was an even bigger leap from the United States to Japan, but I have continued to maintain my high standard of work. This year, I have kept up a 4.0 GPA and was recognized on Principal’s Honor Roll. Overall, my outstanding academic work is remarkable because I have achieved high grades in all honors classes, all while facing new school environments each year and balancing sports and extracurriculars as well.
Your Honor, Sir. Breana’s proudest moment as a person is when she obtained an honor roll certificate last year. She had a hard time with understanding the teacher, but she slowly and gradually grasped the concept. Her hard work paid off as she got all A’s and B’s. Starting in high school, students are not given equal opportunities to excel because of family background. Furthermore, the admissions process itself has its flaws—legacies, minorities, and athletes are being chosen over exceptionally gifted valedictorians. Even after college, the problems do not end; possible joblessness and student debt are unavoidable. On top of these major problems, educators and parents continue to convince kids everywhere that college is the only option to become successful, and choosing another path is heavily looked down upon. The newest generation’s life is centered around the climax of college while at the same time, more and more students are unable to attend universities because of cost or rejection, but this is a paradox. The more high schoolers work hard, the more high schoolers will get turned down to their dream schools, and the more the college admissions process effectively become a lottery, leading to “many highly talented, brilliant, creative people thinking they’re not” (Robinson). The widespread college problem has no easy fix, nor does it have a single solution. Rather than working to fix the unfixable, adults must stop putting such emphasis on the college pathway, and instead stress that there are other options. The future of the job world is unknown; there is no way to know if an expensive college education is the right choice. College, with all of its flaws, is just one option in preparing for the future; it is not necessarily the best. Therefore, the single word, “college,” should stop dividing the academic from the non-academic or the successful from the unsuccessful, and instead be considered a single path in an array of worthy

During the time that I began my second semester of freshmen year here in McKenzie Tennessee at Bethel University, I'm still not where I want to be yet with the contact list and social skills around campus. I’m still gathering lecture’s from my upper classmen.
