Revelations of alleged harassment and sexual abuse continue to hog the limelight in Hollywood as more women and men come out with stories highlighting their past experience at the hands of some of Hollywood's major players -- both on and behind the screen. After Kevin Spacey, it is now legendary actor Dustin Hoffman’s turn to apologize after being accused by a former female intern of sexual harassment that happened on the set of a TV movie more than 30 years ago. In a statement, Hoffman apologized for "anything I might have done" on the set of “Death of a Salesman.” He told The Hollywood Reporter that "I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation. I

She cared very deeply for her students in the high school and everything to keep then on track. Many of her students trusted her personally that they told her about their problems. Coming from a country in a part of the world where being misogynistic is incredibly prevalent and often encouraged, I have witnessed and been around many acts of sexual harassment as well as victims of it. At a very young age, I learned that my first cousin was sexually harassed by her husband’s brother when they were alone and that is when I learned the true horrors of the world. Everyone knew the truth about what happened, but no one helped my cousin, not her husband, her father, or her brothers. Sadly, Where I’m from, a third world country, is not the only place things like this happen. There are acts of sexual harassment even in countries like America in big corporations such as Hollywood. We’ve learned about these many acts through recent

Sexual assault is something that can affect people emotionally, physically, psychosocially, psychologically, and even spiritually. As often as it occurs in society, the effects that sexual assault can have on an individual are all relatively similar. Sexual assault is any sort of sexually-based action in which one or more participants have not given consent. Often times, people refer to sexual assault as simply rape, however there are other dimensions to sexual assault which can include unwanted kissing, groping, or touching of any form. Emotionally, victims are conflicted about whether it is their own fault or if it the fault of the attacker. In many instances, the victim will blame themselves for what has happened to them. Physically, there is nearly always damage in the affected areas (vagina, anus, penis, breasts, etcetera) that can lead to painful tissue damage. There is also the risk of pregnancy or STD’s that the victim must be aware of. Psychosocially, the victim becomes distant with everyone they were once close to. Their level of trust declines dramatically, causing relationships with spouses, family, and close friends to crumble. Since the victims tend to push their loved ones away, often without giving any sort of reason, they can sometimes face isolation and a lack of support from those whom would usually offer council. The psychological effects are tremendous as well. Victims of sexual assault will often have severe anxiety, post-traumatic stress
In a recent study posed by the CDC, 19.3% of the women’s population in the United States have reported rape (Prevalence and Characteristics of Sexual Violence, Stalking, and Intimate Partner Violence Victimization 1). That is nearly one fifth of the female population. While women who walk the streets alone flood with fear, men are being let off with a mere slap on the wrist for raping women. Another study shows that ninety seven of every one hundred rapists receive no punishment whatsoever. How can women feel safe if their perpetrator is freely roaming the streets? Although rapists are frequently punished, the rape punishment in the United States is far too inconsistent and should be more severe.
Sexual abuse, specifically from a male, generates many negative consequences, especially to the victims involved. Male violence occurs all over the United States and has been steadily rising (Hooks 117). In Bell Hooks’ article, “Feminist Move to End Violence”, she discusses the reason why male violence is occurring. She explains, “While male supremacy encourages the use of abusive force to maintain male domination of women, it is the Western philosophical notion of hierarchical rule and coercive authority that is the root cause of violence against women, of adult violence against children, of all violence between those who dominate and those who are dominated” (Hooks 118). Due to the relevance of male violence today, feminist writers have been addressing this issue and its impact in their novels.
Sexual assault has been huge problem on college campus. College female students have been targets of sexual assault acts, According to Robin Gray “Between 20% and 25% of women will experience a completed and/or attempted rape during their college career.” Sexual assault is when is a crime to knowingly cause another person to engage in an unwanted sexual act by force or threat. There are laws that protect women in all types of setting from being victims of sexual assault. The government had made some changes to the laws of sexual assault over the past decade to protect the girls and women so justice can be served. The president Obama has been enforcing a law for the young women in colleges.
Following natural disasters sexual assault increases in affected areas. Some victims of these storms are sent to shelters with little security and are put with untrustworthy people. At some of these shelters women and men are not separated from each other. Even young girls are forced to set up their beds next to strange men. Many people, male and female, are raped or molested in these unsupervised areas. Most incidents go unreported due to the busy law enforcement (Blanch). Women are even more vulnerable to rape if they are the caretaker of the family. If these women in particular go out to get supplies alone, they might just become a victim of sexual assault. The recent influx of natural disasters across the world has brought unimaginable devastation. Many have lost their homes, cars, and valuables due to these monster events. With little help from the
Sexual victimization has become a growing issue throughout prisons in the United States. In 2011, correctional administrators reported over 8,763 allegations of sexual assault within correctional facilities (Beck et. al, 2014). 52% of these reports were sexual victimization of inmates only and 48% were incidents involved staff on inmates (Beck et. al, 2014). The Bureau of Justice classifies each sexual act that is conducted in prison by perpetrator staff or inmate and type of acts. There are currently four types of sexual victimization that occurs in prison, jails and other adult correctional facilities. These four include inmate-on-inmate nonconsensual sexual acts, inmate-on-inmate abusive sexual contacts, staff sexual misconduct and staff sexual
Since the 1970s law reform surrounding the issue of sexual assault has become more prevalent and extensive enabling law reform commissions and other governmental bodies to act as an effective force in achieving justice for the victims and society.
Correctional institutions are the institutions that serve as rehabilitation centers with aims of correcting offensive acts. The most common corrective institution is a prison that serves not only as a corrective facility but also serves as a venue to instill vocational skills and academic knowledge to inmates. Correctional institution set ups have similar shape or characteristic as that of an organization with a chain of command right from the top to the bottom (Blackburn, n.d)
Child sexual abuse (CSA) often goes unnoticed and many children will remain silent victims. It can be very difficult for children to talk about, or even acknowledge that this form of abuse is occurring. While there are rising numbers of child sexual abuse cases being reported within the United States, it is disheartening to know that there are even more cases that go unrecognized each year. The American Humane Association (2013) explains that “According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), an estimated 9.3 percent of confirmed or substantiated child abuse and neglect cases in 2005 involved sexual abuse (U.S Department of Health and Human Services, 2007). This figure translates into over 83,800 victims in
Today, Americans fail to realize the prevalence and severity of child sexual abuse within the United States. Though crimes of adult rape are of equal importance, the sexual victimization of children, ages seventeen and under, accounted for nearly 70% of all reported sexual assault cases in 2015. To further the issue, arrests were made in only 29% of these child sexual abuse cases; this means that for every ten sexual abuse cases involving children, only three of the perpetrators are convicted and jailed. Why are these supposed perpetrators jailed less frequently than the number of reported child sexual abuse cases? The United States Criminal Justice System fails to provide the deserved protection and justice for the victims of child sexual abuse by not giving proper sentences to perpetrators equal to the damage they have inflicted upon the victim and the continued implementation of the statute of limitations in cases of child sexual abuse.
Furthermore, the search for the truth about child sexual abuse is somewhat ill judged as a result of how figures are produced, the way in which the abuse is defined, the source of information and the methods used by researchers. Consequently, accurate assessment of the problem becomes a challenge. The features of the problem present barriers to research as sexual abuse is a crime that is kept secret. Many people are reluctant to talk about this crime for many reasons including fear, shame, and guilt (Ogunade, 1998).t.
