Sexual Harassment is a problem that occurs frequently on many college campuses. The fact that it occurs often is terrible, but what makes it even worse is that these incidents tend to go unreported. Many individuals are unlikely to report what has happened to them because of humiliation, the many different misconceptions about sexual harassment, and the fear of their attacker. After being harassed many people do not want others to know what has happened to them. Some victims feel as though others may criticize or pass judgment on them because of the circumstances regarding the incident. Some feel as though they may not be believed and many do not find it easy to disclose information regarding personal experiences of this type of offense. …show more content…
Many people are not clear on what constitutes as sexual harassment and what does not. Some may not even realize that they have been sexually harassed and others may feel as though what has been done to them is not of great importance or even worth being acknowledged (Braine, Bless, Fox, 1995). Researchers have found that one of the main causes of fewer reports is the sense of insignificance that victims have (Braine, Bless, Fox, 1995). Many write off such comments and actions as playful jokes but later realize the sobriety of them when the harasser becomes comfortable with what they are doing. A study that was conducted found that about twenty eight percent of college students reported experiencing unwanted sexual attention, but only about nine percent considered this attention sexual harassment (Paludi, Nydegger. R, Desoza , Nydegger. L, Dicker, K.A, 2006). Sexual Harassment is classified as sexist remarks/behaviors, unwanted sexual advances, sexual bribery, and anything of sexual behavior that is found to be uncomfortable by the recipient (Braine, Bless, Fox, 1995). It also is not limited to just verbal and physical abuse; sexual harassment can include unwanted emails and visuals (Paludi, Nydegger. R, Desoza , Nydegger. L,Dicker, K.A, 2006). It can occur between peers, people of the same sex, and people of the opposite sex (Paludi, Nydegger. R, Desoza , Nydegger. L, Dicker, K.A,

Allegations of sexual harassment are thrown about freely in today’s society and it seems that individuals do not fully understand the gravity of the word or what it actually conveys. Daijah Wilkins, a senior this year explained that until her sophomore year she didn’t fully understand either. She was standing in the hallway when she overheard a teacher, Mrs. O’Conner, tell a couple that she felt sexually harassed by their actions. The couple, as well as Daijah couldn’t understand how that could be possible when the two were simply kissing. After the students explained to Mrs. O’Conner that sexual harassment was only possible if someone physically touched another
Even though college campuses have taken steps to try and spread awareness about sexual assault on college campuses, many young people do not know what domestic violence looks—or feels like. A 2011 poll on domestic and dating abuse concluded that 1 in 3 surveyed women had been in an abusive relationship, while 1 in 5 had been abused at some point during their college career (Moscou, 2015). Those numbers, though taken from a small group, are very scary. About half of those students said they had not received any education on what domestic violence looks like, or what to do to help a friend in that kind of situation (Moscou, 2015). I want to help lower those numbers. I want to, and I can accomplish, a campaign to help raise awareness

Drawing attention and raising awareness about discrimination based on race, ethnicity and gender the authors want to show how these can affect sexual harassment on campus.
Many college campuses are failing to report cases of sexual assault and rape to police. Campuses don’t report these cases because they do not want their reputations ruined.
Sexual harassment is a demeaning practice, one that constitutes a profound affront to the dignity of the employees forced to endure it. By requiring an employee to contend with unwelcome sexual actions or explicit sexual demands, sexual harassment in the workplace attacks the dignity and self-respect of the victim both as an employee and as a human being. Sexual harassment is well defined as an unwelcome sexual request for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. In many countries, sexual harassment is considered a form of sexual abuse and employment discrimination. Sexual assault has been a huge issue for many years on college campuses and universities nation wide. As society has evolved, thoughts on sexual assault have also evolved, becoming more focused on the details of victim treatment than ever before. The topic of sexual assault is debatable and sparks many opinions on weather sexual assault on college campuses is becoming more frequent, or if there is just heightened awareness. Sexual assault can happen to anybody no matter the gender, race, religion, or age. Recently there have been many studies conducted on sexual violence on college campuses and universities producing ample amounts of statistics. One may argue that sexual assault rates are the same, but there are simply more studies and attention on sexual assault in the past 20 years. Gender roles have played a huge part in sexual assault on college campuses. Women and men have different expectations when it comes to roles in the relationship, men are often expected to make the first move. One may ask what causes a perpetrator to sexually harass somebody and think it is acceptable. There are various reasons as to why perpetrators do what they do, and may vary from person to person. Although sexual violence is a large problem for many colleges and universities, there is a surprising shortage of federal laws/rules and regulations regarding sexual assault. Colleges are able to develop their own personal policies and procedures for how they will prevent and deal with sexual
Since sexual assaults on campus usually begin at parties, this could prompt possible challenges for bystanders to intervene when witnessing instances of sexual violence on campus. The problem is that parties can be crowded and people are there to have fun, which means they could be distracted. If there are distracted, they may not even realize that there is a sexual violence event may be happening in the first place. This means they would not be able to complete the first step on the sequential model of helping because they would be too distracted and concerned with themselves to realize that an emergency is happening. Also, another possible obstacle could be the amount of people present at the event. A great number of people attends parties
Students in campus and colleges are all entitled to protection by the institution and the law. However, despite the two organizations handling the welfare of the student, students have a risk to sexual assault. Reports released concerning the matter state that one out of five college students has suffered sexual assault during their college life. The report further explains that 95% of rape cases in United States campuses are not reported to the authorities. It is vital to understand what sexual assault means before identifying the problems and finally coming up with possible solutions. The Act of sexual assault tends to violate the victim's sexual integrity.
An average person may say that sexual assault on college campuses are hidden because of peer pressure and how their peers might judge them. Many victims believe that speaking out will jeopardize their reputation and friendships. Victims of sexual assault on college campuses say there is no need to report the incident to campus police, because they feel as if the police will make it seem that the reason they were sexually assaulted was their fault. Just because a person doesn’t give you an answer or says “No”, doesn’t mean that you can do whatever you want to them. If they don’t give you permission or approve, then it’s consider sexual assault. Sexual harassment is discrimination that involves any uninvited comments, exploits, or behavior regarding sex, gender, or sexual orientation. One night, “Amy,” a student at State, was hanging out with some friends in her room. “A bunch of people were there, and one guy I didn’t know was obviously drunk and kept asking me out. I tried to brush him off, and didn’t take it seriously because he was drunk. I left to go to sleep. “He followed me to my room and kept banging on my bedroom door, trying to push it open and asking me to talk to him. I talked to him for a little while just to appease him.” Finally, the guy’s friends coaxed him away from Amy’s door. “I don’t know if that’s sexual harassment,” she said. “I wasn’t worried that he was going to assault me. The whole thing was just annoying.”
Without controversy, all of us can agree on one thing, that any kind of sexual harassment is something so utterly abominable and ugly to look at. The U.S government defines sexual harassment is, “unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature”(U.S. Equal Employment). Sexual harassment typically victimizes woman, but this does not mean that men are not the victims of sexual harassment cases all the time. In many times sexual harassment can lead to abuse.

In my conclusion I will give a recommendation on how to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace and what management can to protect their employees.
