Shakespeare's Metaphors And Figurative Language

In the drama, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there are several long speeches that show different types of figurative language and structure. One that is particularly intriguing is the speech Mercutio makes when trying to persuade Romeo to go to the Capulet party. In this speech Mercutio describes Queen Mab, who is a fairy like woman that controls dreams. She makes ladies dream of kisses, soldiers dream of the blood of enemies, and lawyers dream of money. Within this speech about Queen Mab, Shakespeare uses metaphorical language, imagery, specific tones, and structure to create an image for the audience and contribute to the larger plot of the play.

In act 2 scene 7 of William Shakespeare’s All The World’s A Stage, the use of metaphors, imagery, and tone all correlate to stress the idea that a person’s life occurs in many stages. Each stage highlights the person's growth, yet never transforms the individual's true self. Which they left with after their life cycle is complete.

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” (“Sonnet 18”) is one of Shakespeare’s most famous poems. It is the model English, or Shakespearean sonnet: it contains three quatrains and a finishing couplet.. The poem follows the traditional English sonnet form by having the octet introduce an idea or set up the poem, and the sestet beginning with a volta, or turn in perspective. In the octet of Sonnet 18, Shakespeare poses the question “Shall I compare the to a summer’s day” and basically begins to describe all the bad qualities of summer. He says it’s too windy, too short, too hot, and too cloudy. Eventually fall is going to come and take away all the beauty because of the changes nature brings. In the sestet, however, his tone changes as he begins to talk about his beloved’s “eternal summer” (Shakespeare line 9). This is where the turn takes place in the poem. Unlike the summer, their beauty will never fade. Not even death can stop their beauty for, according to Shakespeare, as long as people can read this poem, his lover’s beauty will continue to live. Shakespeare believes that his art is more powerful than any season and that in it beauty can be permanent.

Although Shakespeare appears to be conforming, he still elevates his work above the exhausted conventions of other Elizabethan sonneteers. Instead of objectifying his lover through trite comparisons, he declares that she is too beautiful and pleasant to be compared even to a day of the most enjoyable season of the year. While most consider the realm of nature to be eternal and that of humans to be transitory, Shakespeare accentuates the death of a season and imbues his sweetheart with everlasting life. He ingeniously inverts the scheme of things in order to grant his love perpetual existence through his poetry.

A writer must employ a multitude of rhetorical devices to effectively portray a characters emotion. Shakespeare does just that when conveying the emotions of the character Cardinal Wolsey when he hears of his dismissal from the king's court in Henry VIII. Through a shift in tone and figurative language, Shakespeare shows the wave of anger and despair felt by Wolsey as he tries to come to terms with his predicament. In the play Henry VIII by Shakespeare, he gives a reflection towards the reactions of unexpected situations by using the character Cardinal Wolsey who was dismissed as the king’s advisor. Shakespeare uses Wolsey to portray the bitter feelings through figurative language, and then uses a despair tone along with the allusion reflecting on his situation.

In the play Othello, Shakespeare uses many literary devices to help the reader understand the theme of the story. One of those many literary devices used in the play, is the wide range of irony. Throughout the pages of the book the reader will see the use of dramatic, situational, and verbal irony. Shakespeare does not use irony in an understated way, it is very direct, and can be found on almost every page of the book. The use of irony creates suspense, and adds interest as to what will happen.

Despite the outdated content and language of his works, Shakespeare’s plays remain popular with modern readers and play watchers for another reason. William Shakespeare's usage of symbols and metaphors throughout his literature opens an eye to the reader. In William Shakespeare's, "Hamlet" metaphors are used and spoken by Hamlet. Hamlet uses these metaphors to show his emotions of anger and to depict false identity. Hamlet himself speaks, "Nor customary suits of solemn black, Nor windy suspiration of forced breath, No, nor the fruitful river in the eye, Nor the dejected 'havior of the visage" (1.2.79-89). This passage appears when Hamlet responds to his mother at the wedding when she asks him why he is still upset about his father when everyone has come to face the fact that his father King Hamlet is dead. Shakespeare’s usage of metaphor and simile in A Midsummer Night’s Dream is best understood as an attempt to provide some useful context for relationships and emotions, most often love and friendship, or the lack thereof. One example of such a usage is in Act 3, Scene 2 of the play. Here, the two Athenian couples wake up in the forest and fall under the effects of the flower, thus confusing the romantic relationships between them. Hermia comes to find her Lysander has fallen for Helena. Hermia suspects that the two have both conspired against her in some cruel joke, and begins lashing out against Helena. She says “We, Hermia, like two artificial gods, / Have with our needles created both one flower, / Both one sampler sitting on one cushion, / Both warbling of one song, both in one key; / As if our hands, our sides, voices, and minds, / Had been incorporate. So we grew together, / Like a double cherry, seeming parted; / But yet a union in partition / Two lovely berries moulded on one stem: / So, with two seeming bodies, but one heart; / Two of the first, like coats in heraldry, / Due but to one, and crowned with one crest.” (Shakespeare 2.3.206-13). Shakespeare writes this list of vibrant metaphors to establish the prior relationship between these two characters and to make it evident how affected Helena is by this unexpected turn of events, as well as to add a greater range of emotion to the comedy, thereby lending it more literary and popular appeal.

Although the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream certainly deals with the difficulty of romance, it is not considered a true love story like Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s work is among the hardest to read because of its supposed complexity and sophistication. The language used in the Early Modern Era is different than that of the Post Modern Era. Audiences that saw the performances were aural learners and were able to pinpoint certain tones and facial expressions that readers may not detect through words. Watching the plays performed provided better feedback than readings do (Palfrey 10-11). Metaphors, implicit or explicit, are figures of speech that help compare two unlike things and are not designed for literal intake. Yet, with Shakespeare’s work, metaphors should be taken literally. According to George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, however, this technique of comparison allows metaphors to simultaneously highlight and hide certain attributes and/or qualities about the thing(s) being compared to (12-13). The highlighting and hiding of metaphors gives readers more insight into what Shakespeare may have meant at the time or even more so in what context did the people of the Elizabethan Age use language (Palfrey 11). Two important components of metaphors that do the highlighting and hiding are the vehicle and the tenor; each can be implicit or explicit as well. The metaphor in question emphasizes both the importance and unimportance of Lavinia’s character.
