Glory road is a film based on the 1966 Texas Miners, the first all-black NCAA Championship winning basketball team. When the coach, Don Haskins decided to recruit players based purely on ability, and not race. With the purpose of telling the story of the Texas Miners, their experiences and lives leading up to, and becoming the NCAA Champions. At the forefront of this movie are racial issues which we know were rife at the time throughout America. The relationship between sport and psychology is not abundantly clear in this film. I believe, however that, that is because the film was not made for that purpose, as a documentary or article may have. The film was made for the purpose of entertainment, and to tell the story of the Texas Miner -Which it effectively does. In saying that, being a sport psychology student and after critically watching and examining the film, I was also clearly able to see many psychological concepts and issues woven throughout the film, there relationship to sport, and the effects it had on the Texas Miners, and their Championship winning team.

Hotel Rwanda is a film directed by Derek George that tackles one of the most shockingly disturbing events in recent history, when the Hutu radicals of Rwanda initiated a frightening crusade of genocide, slaughtering thousands of minority Tutsis while people from other countries did nothing and acted oblivious to what was going on in Rwanda. George vividly adapted Hotel Rwanda in a way that the viewer from beginning to end saw the effects of genocide, political corruption, and the consequences of violence. Depicted in the early 1990s , the views on ethnic conflict in Rwanda and the sequence of events is really descriptive and sometimes hard to watch as George digs deep into what happened in Rwanda. The early scenes in town set the scene amazingly for what’s to come throughout the film and gives us vivid insight on the views and social standing of Rwanda in the 1990’s. Don Cheadle portrays Paul Rusesabagina in the movie playing the hotel manager, his wife in the movie played by Sophie Okonedo is a Tutsi and wants to help when the violence ensues. Their marriage throughout the movie supplies a great sub plot detailing how a relationship can stand through turmoil.

My gut reaction to hearing a film about wheelchair rugby was one of pity. I thought that as soon as I saw the players I would feel sorry for them not being able to play the sport the “right” way, or the traditional way. My unconscious bias towards disabled people seemed hard-wired into my brain. I was expecting less of them athletically but after sitting through the 88-minute documentary on wheelchair rugby I was proven wrong in the best way possible.

The Gangster film ‘Scarface’ (DePalma) is about the rise and eventual fall of Cuban immigrant, Tony Montana. Throughout the film the viewer witnesses how Tony Montana goes from a criminal in Cuba to a drug overlord in America. The average viewer cannot connect to the arc of Tony Montana. But, the average viewer can connect to what Tony Montana is working for, the American dream. Brain DePalma chooses purposefully to have a hyper-masculine, narcissistic, megalomaniac immigrant as the main character of a story of American dream. In ‘Scarface’, DePalma show the universality of the American dream. By utilizing various filming techniques, DePalma shows how the American dream is available for everyone.

One thousand children suffer sports related concussions in just the state of Minnesota each year (Olson). With cases of concussions in youth sports becoming more and more frequent, concern on the subject is rising. Though all sports present a high risk, “football still causes the most concussions” (Emerson). In the documentary Frontline: Football High, director Rachel Dretzin demonstrates that high school football sets excessive pressure over aspiring teen athletes and presents a high risk of injury through concussion. By using actualities, interviews and archival footage in her film, Dretzin conveys the message that concussions in high school football are common, dangerous and worth exposing.

Dope is a film written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, which depicts the struggles and achievements of Malcom Adekanbi. Malcom, a teenager who is growing up in the Darby-Dixson neighborhood commonly known as “the bottoms” in Inglewood, California, understands who he isn’t, but struggles throughout the movie to figure out who he is. This film brilliantly explains a few reasons for delinquent behavior, including societal need to label and/or define people, which is often decided based on race, gender, socioeconomic status and social standing, as well as how to overcome obstacles that have been placed in front of us, thereby changing the trajectory of our lives. The following quote from the movie given by Malcom explains how labels have made it hard for him to figure out who he is: “For most of my life I’ve been caught in between who I really am and how I’m perceived. In between categories and definitions…. But when you don’t fit in you’re forced to see the world from many different angles and points of view” (Famuyiwa, 2015). Malcom wonders if he’s a geek, a poor black child who doesn’t know his father and is being raised by a single mom, a menace, a drug dealer or is actually Harvard material.

The marginalization and isolation found in the suburbs of Paris are the results of 20th century postwar Paris failed urban planning. City officials attempted to reconstruct Paris into a higher functioning city based on models of other metropolitan communities; using designs that broke the city into sections. As a result, urban planners created separation between classes, which produced a loss of connection and identity for immigrant families. Ang Lee’s Crouching tiger Hidden Dragon is probably one of the most successful foreign films to ever be screened in America. Being the number one film of the year in 2000. On the other hand it was reportedly considered a flop in China. While it was influenced by American film styles, it still kept true to many aspects of its Chinese film heritage. With very apparent love story, it lacked the Extreme amount of Kung Fu fight scenes eastern audiences have come to enjoy. This is a stunning love story between a monk and widow. While it does have its share of over the top fight scenes, when you start to dig deeper the films many social implications become apparent. With ties to subjects such as religion, martial arts, philosophy, love, and even gender issues. This film is a representation of the modern era and how long practiced traditions are being challenged. Each character and plot line allows a glimpse into the Social and Traditional understanding of a culture.

When it comes to the film industry, entertainment is the tool used to acquire what is desired, money. The main goal for filmmakers when they create a film is to attain money in addition to the money spent to make the movie. Therefore, in some films that they like to base off of true accounts, it is somewhat necessary to dramatize or embellish the story to really tug at the heartstrings of the films audience. They achieve this goal by the use of dramatic music, ambient lighting, and a small amount of tweaked diction. The Fighter is an excellent example of this dramatization in action because throughout the film the characters are faced with a multitude of decisions that must be made.
