Gabrielle Brown is a remarkable young lady. From the time she was walking and talking, she possessed an ability to understand the world around her. Her birth position, third and last, gave her an advantage as she learned to go with the flow. While she is highly adaptable to situations, she often finds herself in a leadership role. With her friends, she usually assumes the task of organizing group events, keeping the peace, and maintaining positive relationships—a distinct benefit when you are a teenage girl. I am most proud of Gabbie (her nickname) for the intensity with which she approaches life. Attending medical school began early for Gabbie and attending high academic schools are a pre-requisite. This is not new. When she went to pre-school, her teacher remarked that Gabbie sure shows an affinity and desire for knowledge. I was hesitant to send her to Kindergarten after only one year, but this comment was impactful. While in Kindergarten, she struggled and the teacher showed concern. We had her tested and found two results. First, a slight hearing loss required surgery to solve the situation. Next, a private academic evaluation found she lacked confidence, but once given the support she achieved First Grade level curriculum. Last year she struggled due to recurring sinus infections. Again, we had her tested and discovered a severe issue, which was surgically corrected over the summer. Spring was a particularly difficult time for her (especially since coaches are looking closely at you during Junior year), but the lesson learned was to become a better self-advocate, ask for help, and study smarter. Most high school students do now want to ask the teacher for help or for an accommodation due to a problem (my hearing impaired student taught me this condition).
