Ancient Sparta.
Athens and Sparta were both city-states in Ancient Greece. A city-state is a small independent country with its own laws and government. Although they were only 150 miles apart, they were very different from one another. They each have their own values, geography, government, economy, education and how they treated women and slaves. If given the chance to go back in time, I would suggest that Greeks settled in Sparta because of their better education, better treatment of women and slaves and better geography.
The first reason that Greeks should have settled in Sparta is because of their education. The purpose in Sparta was to produce men and women capable of defending their city state. Boys and girls attended military
The city-states Athens and Sparta were rivals in ancient Greece. Geographically the two were very close to each other, but they had a very different economy, cultural values, and way of governing. Both city-states had two very different ways of doing things. I will be highlighting the major differences.
During the times of Ancient Greece, two major forms of government existed, democracy and oligarchy. The city-states of Athens and Sparta are the best representatives of democracy and oligarchy, respectively. The focus of the times was directed towards military capabilities, while the Athenians were more interested in comfort and culture. It was the oligarchy in Sparta that put a war-like attitude as its first priority and best met the needs of Ancient Greece. These factors empowered Sparta and led to the development of an authoritative and potent state. Other contrasting issues included women’s rights, social classes, and value of human life.
Ancient Greece was comprised of small city-states, of which Sparta and Athens were two. Athens was renowned as a center of wisdom and learning. The people of Athens were interested in arts, music, and intellectual pursuits. Sparta, on the other hand, was recognized for its military strength. A Spartan's life was centered on the state, because he lived and died to serve the state. Although the competing city-states of Sparta and Athens were individually different as well as governmentally diverse, they both managed to become dominating powers in Ancient Greece.
In the period known as classical Greece in the years 800-323 BCE, Greece comprised of small city states (poleis) which were considered and operated as independent small countries. Amongst those city states Athens and Sparta were two of the most powerful and considered in Greek history as the most influential states to western civilisation. These two city states shared some common characteristics whilst in some instances they were very different from each other. Sparta and Athens had differences and similarities in the way they governed their city states, in how they established their military forces, how they treated women, their marriage customs and social gatherings
I think Sparta was the most important city state because it is known for its military features. Even though Sparta isn't known for its academics it still had schools for children to attend. Sparta had a better farmland than Athens so it was easier to grow crops, and trade crops. They grew olives, grain, barley, oats, and more. Athens was closer to the Mediterranean Sea so it was easier to get
In Sparta, men were mainly warriors; others were slaves. Athens was located near the water. Therefore, the economy was dependent on trade within the Mediterranean Sea.
The greatest city-states of all time were the city-states of Sparta, and Athens from which we take many of our modern ways. Both cities, had the same governments, but they had a different ways of life. Sparta was similar to other Greek Cities. Athens men worked different jobs. They both have slaves to depend on. But, they are in different cities.
Sparta’s economy was mainly based on agriculture. Sparta kept to itself and trained for battle, and provided an army whenever it was needed. Sparta would be better to live in because the women there had more rights than any other women. They could form friendships
The ancient civilization of Greece contained many different city-states; two of these city-states were Sparta and Athens. Sparta and Athens were different in their values, politics, and societies. Sparta was focused on their military, discipline, and to have a strong state. Athens was a democratic state that was peaceful and where women were open to culture and democracy. How do these two city-states differ?
This is the most important reason to me because i am woman and i think being a part of live and being respected is what everybody should experience. Girls in athens are taught basic household chores and how to behave but in sparta girls are taught how to hunt, farm and many more active activities. Girls can live better in sparta with little
Athens and Sparta are the two famous city-states in Ancient Greece. The Athens was more superior then Sparta. The Athenians were stronger because they had a better geography, government, cultural achievements, and I would rather live in the Athens.
In Ancient Greece, it would have been better to live in Sparta, one of the most elite city-states in ancient Greece, along with Athens, another influential city-state. Sparta was located on the Peloponnesus Peninsula, and it was ruled by two kings, a form of government known as an oligarchy. Athens was a democracy located close to its nearest harbor. Sparta was a better city-state to live in because of the way they treated their slaves, the way they treated their women, and their powerful military.
To begin with, Spartan lacked in advanced education. Sparta was as dumb as a pancake. In document D, the text states that “[The Spartans] learned to read and write for purely practical reasons: but all other forms of education they banned from the country, books and treatises being included in this as much as [foreign teachers].” This demonstrates that Spartans didn’t allow anyone teach from outside the city-state. They also didn’t teach many of the subjects that we have now, including math. Math is a core subject that we use in our everyday life. Back then, they could have studied the work of art or the art of music. These 2 things have changed how we live today. These things help us from getting bored and make us relaxed. These things changed some of our lives. Maybe if Sparta had a better education system then they would have lasted as long as Athens.
Athens and Sparta were two of the most powerful and well known cities among all the Greek nations. Most would find it easier to find more similarities among these two groups of mighty people. But there are some differences between these two power houses. For instance the way that these cities were governed and their political procedures and functions were quite different from each other.
Sparta was a powerful city-state. It had some of the most vigorous warriors. Sparta was prominent enemies with Athens between four hundred and thirty-one BC and four hundred and four BC.
