Marijuana is composed of chemicals such as tetrahydrocannabinol (HTC, and over 80 cannabinoids. Marijuana is acknowledged for providing smokers with a “high” feeling. Since the twentieth century, this illicit drug has been banned across the world. However, over the past few years studies have been conducted on marijuana and the results show that it can actually be helpful in many different areas of society. The legalization of marijuana has widespread benefits for the medical, law enforcement, and economic sectors. Marijuana has a variety of benefits in the medical field because it can control many side effects from different diseases. For instance, cancer is a deadly disease that kills over seven million people across the world every year. Patients diagnosed with cancer go through several painful treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy. Thankfully, marijuana helps to alleviate pain and suppress nausea from cancer treatments. Moreover, it has been proven to prevent cancer cells from spreading throughout the body. According to Business Insider, cannabidiol (CBD), a chemical found in marijuana, stops cancer by turning off a gene called ID-1. This gene is what helps the cancer cells produce copies of themselves and expand. Also, marijuana can both nurse and obstruct glaucoma, an eye disease that damages vision and
There are many other health benefits that most people overlook. For example, according to Arias, marijuana has been shown to suppress tumor growth in cancer patients. She goes on to say, researchers have found that THC targets cannabinoid receptors which are related to the endocannabinoids which are naturally produced in the human body. THC from marijuana activates these receptors, which can be used to treat several types of cancer.
Since the first efforts to legalize marijuana in the 1960s, Americans have become progressively more accepting of requests to liberalize laws restricting possession and use of marijuana, but the shift has not been a straight line. After 11 states decriminalized marijuana possession in the 1970s, recoil led by suburban parents led too much harsher implementation of drug laws. But since California legalized medical marijuana in 1996, outlooks toward the drug have relaxed significantly.("A Brief History of Public Opinion on Marijuana Legalization.")

The proposition known as Prop 64 is the California Marijuana Legalization Initiative. This proposition was on the ballot November 8th, 2016 and supporters have also referred this initiative as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act. In which has been approved. Those who have voted yes supported legalizing marijuana usage for recreational purposes for those who are aged 21 years or older. The money from the taxes will go to drug research, enforcements, youth programs, health and safety grants addressing marijuana, and preventing damage to the environment resulting from illegal marijuana production. Proposition 64 legalized permitting smoking marijuana in a private home, or at a business that has been licensed for on-site marijuana consumption. Although smoking while driving, in all public places, and anywhere smoking tobacco is, has remained illegal. Support for marijuana legalization is rapidly increasing throughout the United States. “A slim majority, 53% of Americans, say the drug should be made legal, compared with 44% who want it to be illegal” (Motel). What would change if marijuana was legalized federally in the United States? Would everyone be sane? A lot of things in the United States could happen by legalizing marijuana. There would be less marijuana related crimes. With all the laws that are being passed, would it be harder to tax? Would it benefit the economy? marijuana should be legalized, federally.
Over the past twenty years we have made a tremendous amount of changes in terms of what should be considered legal and illegal substances. For example, we can focus in on one specific drug that has become popular in controversial debates recently, marijuana. Until this point, marijuana was considered illegal. Recently, a handful of states have made the decision to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. To date there has been 23 states that have legalized the use of marijuana in some form. In November of 2012 Colorado and Washington states legalized the use of marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. In a survey conducted in 2013, a Gallup pole showed that
Marijuana should be legalized in all 50 states, when we go to concerts or parties all we smell in the vicinity is marijuana. Many of us have witnessed people smoking marijuana or may know a couple people who smoke marijuana. The main reason marijuana should be legalized is because it is bought by everyone right now illegally. The money people are using to buy marijuana is going into black money basically because the money is being paid under the table, which means it has no taxes. If the United States would just legalize marijuana, this country would be able to make so much more money because the money won’t be black money. Marijuana targets a vast variety of people around the United States. Also marijuana may be used by people who want
Nowadays, marijuana or more commonly called “weed,” has been declared legal for medical purposes in twenty-nine states, and Washington DC, in The United States. That means more than a half of the states have said yes to this controversial topic. Marijuana comes from a cannabis plant; it contains more than 100 chemical compounds, known as cannabinoids. The two main ones are THC and CBD. THC and CBD are used to treat medical problems, but THC also is used for pleasure effects. The plant has been object of many studies and critics, however it has shown favorable benefits in people who have severe diseases. Some of the potential benefits are: reduce chronic pain, appetite/nausea, and less toxic than other drugs.
Marijuana, also known as, cannabis, pot, weed, or hemp, has been a topic of intense debates for many years, but today, it is in the spotlight more than ever. The issue about the use of this drug is becoming more and more topical because people are debating whether or not to legalize it. Marijuana, is the most commonly used drug in the world. In fact, around 3.8 percent of the world’s population or 158.8 million people around the world use marijuana, according to United Nations. And the number is continuously rising. As of June 2014, 23 U.S. states and Washington D.C. have passed laws legalizing marijuana in some form with three more states considering it. As what Major Neil Franklin (Ret.), a former police officer and current head of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), said, “The legalization of marijuana is good for law enforcement, good for families, and good for our communities” (Washington Post). The benefits and reasons to legalize marijuana are many, and overbearingly outweigh the arguments against legalization.
Marijuana, or cannabis, is a prepared marijuana plant that is intended to play a role in medicine as well as being a psychoactive drug (Kilmer 45). The psychoactive element found in cannabis is known as the tetrahydrocannabinol abbreviated as THC. THC is one of the 483 compounds of the plant that have been identified. Mainly, cannabis is consumed because of its psychoactive and physiological effects that is has on the consumer. Today, marijuana is used for its medicinal values as well as a recreational drug. Other uses might include religious and spiritual rites performed by people (Kaplan 722). Marijuana has been surrounded by legal issues. This paper seeks to delineate the reasons for and against legalization of
Marijuana is a drug that is considered mostly illegal throughout the United States. Yet it is the most commonly used drug in the United States. Research shows that the main ingredient in Marijuana that gets the user high is the chemical delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Marijuana can be smoked, eaten, or through drinking the leaves. The debate still continues today on whether it should be legalized. Marijuana has been studied scientifically for its benefits and the harm it causes to the user. Washington and Colorado were the first states to legalize marijuana for recreational use. In 2009, 46-56% of Americans voted in support of the legalization of marijuana (Grim, R, 2009). These results are why it is such a popular topic in America today. Marijuana derives from the dried leaves, flower buds, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant Cannabis
Medicinal marijuana “refers to using the whole unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat a disease or symptom.” The marijuana plant has many different cannabinoids in it. These chemicals, if used incorrectly or in a harmful manner can cause pose major health concerns and even result in something as serious as death. Marijuana is often called the gateway drug and giving the plant that name completely changes how people view it. However, contrary to the problems that are encountered, there are several cases in which marijuana has been very effective. Marijuana contains over 100 cannabinoids that alter the body in one way or another. The human body naturally produces some of the chemicals found in marijuana. These
Marijuana has grown in the North America since before colonies existed. It comes from the cannabis plant also known as hemp. In colonial times, rope and textiles were made from hemp. Smoking cannabis or marijuana has mind-altering effects due to the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) chemical in it (History). This has made it controversial in America. Marijuana was first criminalized as a drug in 1937 along with alcohol (History). In 1970, cannabis was listed by the US government as a schedule I drug alongside cocaine and ecstasy. Since that time, many positive effects of cannabis have been discovered and the discussion has turned toward the benefits of this plant. The legalization of marijuana in the United States, will allow its use for medical reasons, will reduce criminal culture around its trade, and will provide buyers’ safer product through government inspection. No longer is marijuana seen as a highly addictive drug. It is not considered a gateway to harder drugs. It is time to decriminalize this substance and bring it into American life in a positive and useful way.
