School uniforms, formerly a standard for private schools, are slowly becoming more and more prominent throughout public schools across the United States. In the 2013-2014 school year as many as one in five public schools required their students to wear uniforms (Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?). The proposed purpose of uniforms include improving academics and behavior and lessening the socio-economic gap that clothing can create. The supporters of uniforms primarily are the educators and the parents of students, meanwhile a 2007 survey showed that in one school district nearly 90% of students oppose them (Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?). While this movement may be an attempt to benefit students in their venture through the education system, it is clear that they are not working as well as proposed. As the evidence will make vividly clear schools should not implement uniforms because there is a lack of evidence that they work, they impose an unnecessary cost on a “free” education, and there is evidence that they may inhibit the very issues that they were intended to help with. The first of many reasons not to impose school uniform policies stems from a lack of evidence that uniforms actually have any benefits whatsoever. Proponents of school uniforms are able to list several possible benefits, but the issue with this is that they are unable to prove any of this, and in fact, a study from David Brunsma, a professor of Sociology at
Just imagine an intruder is in your school and the police are trying to find him but he’s blended in with the crowd. Now imagine a intruder in your school and everybody is wearing a school uniform except for the intruder. This will allow police to effortlessly pick him out of the crowd and capture him. Unfortunately, all across the world, this fantasy is a reality. For years, there has been a huge controversy going on about school uniforms and how they affect students performances socially and academically. The opposition states that school uniforms are costly and takes away the freedom to express oneself as an individual, yet school uniforms insure student safety and help students stay focussed during school. Although some opponents express the idea that school uniforms are costly and take away the students freedom to express themselves, they fail to recognize that school uniforms insure the safety of students, helps them stay focussed and are cost effective.
Lack of parents support is the most significant reason for schools failing to implement any sort of school uniform code. Parents, teachers, and students should support the need for school uniforms in public schools so that they may be able to achieve higher educational goals. This paper will discuss many of the pros to the debate on uniforms in public schools as well as touch on some of the cons on the subject. After weighing the two sides, it will demonstrate how the pros are a more sensible alternative and why schools should require mandatory uniforms for their students.
Do you think kids should have to wear school uniforms? I don’t think so I mean what the fun in that? Kids wearing the same clothes over again and not being able to express our personality with our clothes. Kids should have the rights wearing what they want. Kids want to feel comfortable. Kids want to be happy and not have to wash their uniforms every night just for school.
School uniforms also serve little to no purpose in benefiting the education of children around America. A uniform does not help a student learn things that they need to know. A uniform does not help a student study, take notes, or make flash cards. They bring no educational value to the table of learning. According to many educators and experts, “Uniforms do not improve academics, behavioral and social outcomes, or reduce discrimination or crime” (Farrell). So if a uniform cannot help a student increase their knowledge or grow as a person, why make students wear them?
In 1994, the school district of Long Beach California was one of the first to enforce school uniforms in the grades Kindergarten through 8th, and crime rates in the district dropped 22% soon after. School attendance also improved after the uniforms were introduced. Although this one statistic shows there are positive outcomes from school uniforms, there is one question that remains: Do school uniforms help or harm the students and environment at school? The controversy among this topic is that some people believe that uniforms improve the way kids act in class, however, others believe that school uniforms make their behavior worse. Another thing that certain people don’t like about uniforms is that they are very costly. A woman in Indianapolis was interviewed and said that she has five kids that all need uniforms, and with all the costs combined she had to pay almost $700. She found it was an outrage because she has a son who was a senior at the time and she had to pay for his uniforms as well. Even though she believed that uniforms are not an advantage, other people have the belief that uniforms have a positive outcome. In fact, some people think that the students’ behavior becomes subsequently better in the classroom setting; this is proven in the Long Beach study. There is also proof that school uniforms save people lots of money. This is because parents in one
School uniforms are becoming a popular trend amongst schools worldwide. Students and even most parents don’t agree with the implementation with school uniforms; declaring that uniforms take away the right of self-expression. This topic has both pros and cons that can impact youth in both a good and bad way. School uniforms can be beneficial to learning. The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self- expression. Requiring school uniforms eliminate the debate over whether to require uniforms or not is controversial, undeniably complex, and, from the analyses and arguments that are unquestionably rooted in multifaceted social, political, legal, cultural, racial material, and educational structures. The topic has both pros and cons that can be impact youth in both a good and bad way. One factor can be Academic outcomes; uniforms can reflect a student’s work ethnic as well as grades. Another factor can be behavioral outcomes; wearing uniforms may change a student’s attitude to being more professional since they look more
Yes, students at Rancho Mirage High School should wear uniforms. Some students say it’s a good thing to wear uniforms because it’s more affordable for their parents and that just saves more money so whenever they ask for anything they can have it. As well because it shows that they have educated and they don’t have to go to a private school to prove others that they are educated and smart. So I decided to go around RMHS and ask many students how they felt about the school wanted them to wear uniforms. The first person we interviewed , Zieanna , said “Wearing school uniforms is a good idea, it’ll get rid of bullying and discrimination of other kids for not having expensive clothes,” so we asked her why would she say that and she responded with
They are difference between High School and College about to wear uniforms anymore for adults now is growing up. When before went to young and teens age start at Elementary and Middle School must wear is uniforms always. Then now to High School about want to see outfits is fashion for models something in school. For students want to see the show is girls and boys about looking so pretty between handsome alike are friendships. Sometime to rule the school is a must match clothing correct and don't want to show something for sexy do not allow bring schools. It's happening to High School get quickly to dangerous and some disruption for student are negative never to say that is uniforms.
School uniforms are increasingly popular across the nation. In fact, it becomes a huge controversial argument of communities rejecting these mandated school uniforms in their schools. However, school uniforms are not a negative thing; in fact, it could be positive in many ways by: eliminating cliques, saving money for parents, and taking away the bullying from students less fortunate. Meanwhile, on the other side of the argument, people believe that school uniforms will violate students’ freedom of expression, create a financial burden on families, and uniforms will not alleviate problems. However, with a solution that would benefit both parties, the public school systems in Oklahoma City district would benefit greatly if this policy were adopted in all the schools; since, the district only has 74 public schools in uniforms, while 17 schools are not.
As a school Rancho Mirage High School should wear uniforms. Uniforms would benefit our school in many ways, that people wouldn't think of. RMHS students are required to wear a lanyard with their ids to help quickly identify the students and also a quick way to see if they attend RMHS. Having uniforms would help with this quick way to help teachers and administration. As a school uniforms would help build a sense of community at the school, we would come together as one to school. Uniforms aren't as bad as most people make of them. As students we all come together as one and go to school for the same purpose, rather it be forced or not, is our education. So what would be wrong with wearing the same uniform? It would benefit many students, because
According to 2010 peer-review study, schools with mandatory uniform policies had a decrease in firearm related, drug related, and sexual violence than schools without uniforms. School uniforms reduce the amount of money your parents have to spend on school cloths, and reduce the amount of tardy students that are tardy because they have to get ready. Schools should have school uniforms.
The first point of why all public schools should adopt a school uniform policy is uniforms save the family money. In 1999 the NPD group conducted a survey and found that families whose children went to a school with a uniform policy spent $85 less than families whose children did not. (Pike, 1999). This is sixteen years later after that survey was conducted so the figure today will be in the hundreds as status symbol clothes prices are on the rise every year. There
Some may say that the uniforms will help with grades and fights, but that was not the case. Students took and survey and the results were reviewed by the students at the University of Nevada. According to the results, 90% of seventh and eighth grade public school students did not like wearing uniforms and also in 2007, a survey of Harford County, MD public school student found that 87.9% of students were opposed of wearing the school uniforms. According to ProCon.com, “In the year following the introduction of mandatory school uniforms to the Long Beach (CA) Unified School District, 81% of middle school students said uniforms did not reduce fights,” The survey later showed that “76% said they did not help them fit in at school, 69% said they did not make them feel more connected with the school community, and 71% said they felt no safer traveling to and from school.” This information shows that uniforms did not benefit students in some of the main aspects of school. That is the second reason why students should not have to wear school
The first major reason for not wearing school uniforms is, it forces a student to conceal his or her individuality. To many people, it appears that the school system is trying to strip away this individuality on purpose, but now is the time that the school should be embracing it and helping the student become the person they are meant to become. “According to opponents of uniforms, even preschoolers should have input into their wardrobe, and the need to encourage personality, confidence, and independence grows more important as the student becomes older” (Chen). Because of this lack of self-expression, students feel their first amendment is being violated and most people would agree, which causes the school to look bad. Another way of looking at it is they are forcing students to become on mold, or one certain way of being. However, the problem with making them one is, no matter how they look they will still have their own individual personality traits that will come out in the end. If forced to wear the uniforms, many students would express these traits by adding things to their uniform such as brightly colored gems for girls and different
School systems have debated for years if they should make school uniforms mandatory for all students. Some parents do not want school systems to mandate uniforms due to pressure from their children to be able to maintain their individuality through clothing, while other parents prefer uniforms to reduce spending money on name brand school clothes and to minimize associations with gangs. More school systems across the United States of America are going to uniforms from grades one through twelve where students are still impressionable by their peers. I believe public schools should require students to wear school uniforms to help parents save money in these hard economic times, to limit the number of incidents of violence in the school systems due to gangs and gang associates such as colors, and to prepare students for the job force after school where some places make it mandatory to wear uniforms to work every day.
