Decent Essays

Sigmund Freuds definition of the uncanny in literature presents itself in many ways, in these specific texts shown, “Once More To The Lake” by E.B White, “The Haunting of Helen Walker” by Henry James, The Lottery” by Shirley White, "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, "Blank Space" by Taylor Swift and "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce. Freud in his writing says that the “uncanny” involves a “doubling, dividing and interchanging of the self” that can be manifested by in a number of ways and in the Turn of the Screw, it uses this form of the uncanny because the Governess’ fear of both Miles and Flora being possessed and corrupted by the spirits of their former guardians shows that the main character doesn’t yet know that they are possessing the kids but she has a strong feeling, they are possessed and that gives out an uncanny familiar image. Why did the author choose to portray the uncanny in this way? He chose to portray it in this way because he wanted the reader to have a feeling that they the kids are possessed, but not know that they are which would create a feeling of tension for the reader or viewer. In “Once more to the lake” by E.B White, he talks about his return to his lake in Maine. He used to go with his father when he was a kid to this lake and now he takes his son to the lake with him and when he talks about the lake, he moves between the past and present and that gives a sense of a unique uncanny, but not the creepy strange unfamiliarity but the just the familiar. When his son jumps in the lake, the main character’s thoughts between the past and present get broken because he didn’t experience this as a kid and it transitions to mainly the present and he thinks of his own death, which gives a chill of death which is the uncanny.
