Good Country people has a few notable themes. The first theme that one will notice is the incredible patience of Mrs. Hopewell. Another theme one might notice is the constant battle between Hulga also known as Joy and Mrs. Hopewell. They primarily argue about her name change to Hulga, but there were many other things that they disagreed. The most notable theme in this story comes when the Bible salesman pulled the wool over Hulga’s eyes, and he convinced her that he was in love with her. In the end all he really wanted was to steal her wooden leg. The themes in this story are most represented through patience, personal relationships, and trust. First, Patience is displayed through Mrs. Hopewell hiring the Freemans. She was aware that Mr. Freeman was a wonderful farmer, and that Mrs. Freeman is extremely nosey before hiring them. Mrs. Freeman likes to know anything and everything that is happening. Mrs. Hopewell made sure that she was into everything. Mrs. Hopewell also shows an abundance of patience with Hulga, her daughter. Hulga does not have a happy personality, and she is very blunt with her mother. Mrs. Hopewell excuses her negativity because she has one leg, and has no reason to go back to school because she had already obtained a Ph.D. …show more content…
The first being Hulga and Mrs. Hopewell. They are always in disagreement about something especially Hulga legally changing her name from Joy. They seem to have a typical mother and daughter relationship. Another personal relationship is the one between Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman. Mrs. Hopewell finds Mrs. Freeman to be a trying woman at times. Mrs. Freeman is so eager to point out all of the little things to Mrs. Hopewell. For example, she notes that only a few of the figs that were put up last summer has been eaten. Mrs. Freeman also hates to be wrong, and that causes some passive aggressiveness between the
“Good Country People,” is a classic example of the use of irony as a technique for imbuing a story with meaning. Irony works on many different levels through the piece. Examples of this range from O’ Connors use of clearly ironic dialogue to the dramatic irony that unfolds between Manley and Joy-Hulga. However the most obvious examples can be found in O’Connor’s characterization of these, “Good Country People.” The technique of irony is applied prominently to the character’s names and behaviors to present the contradictions between their expectations and their reality. O’Connor uses her characters to explore common notions regarding, “good” and “bad” people. Using their expectations for one another, O’Connor ultimately expose their
Even with all the annoyances from Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Hopewell is willing to endure it because they were good country people to her. Hulga was a very quiet and troubled woman. Oliver Kate explains that, “Joy-Hulga's physical afflictions--her heart condition, her poor eyesight, and her artificial leg--symbolize her emotional, intellectual, and spiritual impairments.”(Kate 234) Due to Hulgas medical problems she could not enjoy many things in life, like teaching philosophy and interacting with others outside the house. She was very detached from other people. Hulga had to be like this to protect herself. The world can be a very cruel place, where they could of judged her because of her fake leg, glasses and heart issues. She was afraid and hand no trust for others outside of her house.
Characterization is the most prevalent component used for the development of themes in Flannery O?Connor?s satirical short story ?Good Country People.? O?Connor artistically cultivates character development throughout her story as a means of creating multi-level themes that culminate in allegory. Although the themes are independent of each other, the characters are not; the development of one character is dependent upon the development of another. Each character?s feelings and behavior are influenced by the behavior of the others.
“Good Country People” by Flannery O’Connor is a short story told in third person omniscient point of view. The story contains a lot of irony, symbolism, imagery, and many more literary devices. Flannery O’Connor’s purpose was to demonstrate how “good country people” are not so “good.” Instead, they were categorized as “trash” and “good.” The short story interprets how the characters are contradictory and how women are portrayed in 1955 as well as today’s society.
Everyone wants to believe that they are beautiful. For this reason, we tend to seek out that approval from others including our parents, friends, and other loved ones. Flannery O'Connor's story, "Good Country People," focuses on this particular theme. In her narrative, a young girl named Joy Hopewell longs for her mother's approval. When she does not find it, Joy begins to believe that she is unworthy of anyone's admiration. This basic premise allows for Manley Pointer to easily win Joy's trust. Flannery O'Connor includes this string of events in order to show the significant role parents play in developing their children's self-esteem, as well as reveal that even though Joy Hopewell begins to believe that she is not beautiful, she
Why are men consider to be the more dominate sex? Women throughout history have proven that they can do anything a man can and more, but still women are seen as lesser. Feminist believe in equality between the sexes. Author Flannery O’Connor applied feministic thinking in her story “Good Country People.” The story describes a mother and daughter experience when a young Bible salesman approaches them. Hulga and her mother, Mrs. Freeman, make excellent subjects for the story’s feministic theme. “Good Country People” shows the feminism by including a strong female character, acceptance of opposite gender roles, and symbolism for the male sex.
The two most important souls in the story "Good Country People" belong to Joy-Hulga and
Joy-Hulga, who had grown cynical and cold as she grew up with only one leg and heart ailment, creates an image that she is smarter and better than the rest of the characters in the story. Her education and self-absorption seemed to instill this attitude in her to greater extent than if she hadn’t studied and read so much. Her weakness is the feeling of power she believed she gained from her studies. She refers to herself as a person who “sees
In each of Flannery O’Connor’s works she inhabits a Christian aspect or theme. In O’Connor’s short story Good Country People, a 32-year-old atheist woman named Joy is faced with the representation of evil in our society. The protagonist Joy believes that her name doesn’t fit who she is. Because of this opinion she decides to legally change her name to Hulga. When Hulga was 10 years old she was in a hunting accident, which caused her to end up needing an artificial leg for the rest of her life. She also has a “weak heart”, the doctors have told her she probably will not make it to 42-years-old. As her life has gone by Hulga has become angry and bitter. But one day, a man named Manley Pointer, a bible salesman shows up to her house. When he comes into the house he charms the 3 women in the house. By the end of the visit, he has made a plan to meet Hulga at the gate at 10 o’ clock the next day. The first thing Manley asks about is her artificial leg. He could tell that, that wasn’t a comfortable subject for her so he dropped it. That day Hulga receives her first kiss; she wasn’t practically impressed. As the day goes by you can see Hulga’s plan to seduce him starts to unfold. They end up going to a barn and start kissing, Suddenly Manley says he loves her and demands she say it back. Soon he convinces her to show him how to take her leg off and put it on. This to Hulga made her
The theme of this story in my opinion was showing kindness to others and receiving it in return. The author revealed this theme through the actions and events of Mr. Johnson. For example, Mr. Johnson had watched a woman’s child while she monitored the movers load up a moving truck with her furniture and other items (Lass). This showed Mr. Johnson willingness to sacrifice his own time to help another person. Another example is when a woman that was in a hurry bumps into Mr. Johnson accidentally on the way to her job because she was running late for work and Mr. Johnson offered to pay her the same wages that she would be paid at her job for one day’s work (Lass). In my opinion, he did not have to offer this to the woman but it was his kindnesses that lead him to do this good deed. Lastly, Mr. Johnson brings two people together by just fixing their problems and having them to meet each other (Lass). This example shows how acts of kindness can lead to other positive outcomes. I wish more people could be like Mr. Johnson.
Thesis Statement: In Flannery O'Connor's short story "Good Country People," the expulsion of the outside world allows for more emphasis on the symbolic nature of each of the active characters.
Good Country People by Flannery O’Connor is a story with a lot of ironic elements in it. These are mostly found in the way that the characters depict themselves in contrast of how they truly are. For example, Mrs. Hopewell says that she has no bad qualities of her own, but she is a constant liar is an how she happened to hire the Freemans in the first place and how they were a godsend to her and how she had them for four years. The reason for keeping them for so long was because they were not trash” (O’Connor 247). Mrs. Hopewell is not the only hypocrite in this story; Manley Pointer is also incredibly hypocritical, fake, and manipulative. He depicts himself as a “Bible salesmen”, but in reality he is a con artist. When Hulga opens up his Bible, she sees a flask of whiskey, cards, and condoms in it. This would be seen as incredibly offensive and sinful to a Christian. According to Thomas F. Gusset, “Joy/Hulga begins to discover that the Bible

Also, people should not judge others by their looks, we see this when Hulga and Mrs. Hopewell think they are superior over everyone else. Manley Pointer’s character serves as evil and is similar to the serpent in the bible.
