Significant Themes In Good Country People

Good Country people has a few notable themes. The first theme that one will notice is the incredible patience of Mrs. Hopewell. Another theme one might notice is the constant battle between Hulga also known as Joy and Mrs. Hopewell. They primarily argue about her name change to Hulga, but there were many other things that they disagreed. The most notable theme in this story comes when the Bible salesman pulled the wool over Hulga’s eyes, and he convinced her that he was in love with her. In the end all he really wanted was to steal her wooden leg. The themes in this story are most represented through patience, personal relationships, and trust. First, Patience is displayed through Mrs. Hopewell hiring the Freemans. She was aware that Mr. Freeman was a wonderful farmer, and that Mrs. Freeman is extremely nosey before hiring them. Mrs. Freeman likes to know anything and everything that is happening. Mrs. Hopewell made sure that she was into everything. Mrs. Hopewell also shows an abundance of patience with Hulga, her daughter. Hulga does not have a happy personality, and she is very blunt with her mother. The first being Hulga and Mrs. Hopewell. They are always in disagreement about something especially Hulga legally changing her name from Joy. They seem to have a typical mother and daughter relationship. Another personal relationship is the one between Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman. Mrs. Hopewell finds Mrs. Freeman to be a trying woman at times. Mrs. Freeman is so eager to point out all of the little things to Mrs. Hopewell. For example, she notes that only a few of the figs that were put up last summer has been eaten. Mrs. Freeman also hates to be wrong, and that causes some passive aggressiveness between the
