Decent Essays

I am a Year 11 student who lives in Wellington and have been saving the money earned from my part time job for three years to buy a car. In this time, I have managed to save $10,000 which is enough to purchase a good first vehicle for someone of my age. I have chosen to buy the Gray Suzuki Swift 2008 over the Silver Mini Cooper 2003 from TradeMe, and will be justifying it in this report. Information such as the running costs, insurance, etc, support my choice, as well as others that are non-financial will be discussed here. The one difference is that the Suzuki has steel wheels, and the Mini has alloy. As a student, the wheels of the Suzuki will be better for me as it is takes great force to bend, and tends to be heavier, lowering the center of gravity so I have more control over the acceleration, resulting in a lower chance of speeding. The Mini’s alloy wheels are not much too disadvantageous, but still has its downsides of use. It is not as high-strength as steel, and is more attractive to thieves because it looks better physically. Steel wheels are also 70-80% less expensive to replace than alloy wheels, making it a better choice. An important part of purchasing a car for me is the insurance, because it will affect me in the long term depending on how careful I am when driving. According to my research, it will cost $50.51 per month ($537.26 annually) for third party, fire and theft with AA Insurance for the Suzuki Swift. The Mini Cooper on the other hand, will be $57.62 per month ($612.73 annually) which I have also chosen to be third party, fire and theft with AA Insurance. As shown in the figures, the Suzuki is the cheaper option with the $75.47 per year
