It no secret that General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee had their differences. Ranging from appearance to actions they hardly shared any similarities. This makes them both easily comparable. Both had their ups and their downs, but in the end, General Robert E. Lee was the best general overall.
Let us start somewhere easy, let us start with their appearances. Lee stood at a 5 ft. 11 in., weighing 175 lbs., and Grant stood under him at 5ft. 7 in., weighing 140 lbs. While Lee was compared in size to the great Abraham Lincoln, it has been said that Grant had to stand on a stool just to address other soldiers. As for their attire Lee was always seen in a perfect uniform. His jacket pressed, complete with a sash, general’s sword, hat, white gloves, and shined boots. Grant on the other hand always look disheveled. He wore a simple private’s uniform with general insignia added on, complete with a jacket that looked slept in. Many people accredit this look saying that “His mind was too busy on winning the war than on looking presentable.” His personal account of how he came to this shows more, “I was impatient to get on my uniform and see how it looked, and probably wanted my old school-mates, particularly the girls, to see me in it. The conceit was knocked out of me by two little circumstances that happened soon after the arrival of the clothes, which gave me a distaste for military uniform that I never recovered from.” Being presentable was something
