Eminem embodies the spirit of Jay Gatsby because they both were misunderstood as children, longed to have a better life, and achieved it. Eminem worked hard to build his credibility as a white rapper. Just as Gatsby tried to make himself a legitimate partner for Daisy, Eminem tried to make himself legitimate to the rap world. Gatsby and Eminem both felt the constant need to make themselves into completely different people. Both of these characters came from nothing and became unstoppable forces in their worlds.
Jay Gatsby and Eminem both have unstable backgrounds and came from rural areas in the Mid-West (“Eminem”). They both started out at the very bottom working their way to the top. They knew the only way to get a new life was to leave their hometowns and try to make it

Changing your name is a big deal because it means leaving behind the person you were, “James Gatz- that was really, or at least legally, his name” (Fitzgerald 98). Gatsby and Eminem both dreamed of having better lives and the risk they both took was for their dreams to come true. Eminem decided to change his name as did Gatsby. They both wanted cooler names to make them legitimate in the eyes of the world, “at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career” (Fitzgerald 98). Eminem has the spirit of Jay Gatsby because he worked through his struggles and tried his hardest to fit into the rap world. Going from a normal name like Marshall Mathers to Eminem shows his determination to fit into the rap world, “his parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people- his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all” (Fitzgerald 98). Gatsby changed his name to fully become a different side of himself he longed to share with the world. He wanted to share the part of himself he had to hide while living in the Mid-West
Thesis Statement: Both Chicago and Gatsby show that, in the 1920s, society viewed women as a joke and they're better off being entertainers.
In The Great Gatsby, a prominent underlying theme is self transformation, or the reinventing of oneself. Throughout the book Gatsby is not what he says he is. He made up his whole life story in order to impress a girl he falls in love with before he is sent off to war. Jay Gatsby sets out to completely reinvent himself in every way, starting with his name. Growing up in the midwest, he was James Gatz, son of poor a poor farmer. In the text, the characters that
A character that is most similar between The Great Gatsby and Chicago are Roxie Hart and Tom Buchanan. As in the movie Chicago the director develops Roxie on the screen as someone who is considered non-loyal as well as sort of sinister. This relates to hot Tom Buchanan is in The Great Gatsby because the author uses literary devices such as when he says "If we don’t look out the white race will be---will be utterly submerged", to show how he’s someone who has no care for other people of color, throughout using symbolism and word choice.
Jay Gatsby, the title character of The Great Gatsby, is really not all that the title might suggest. First of all, his real name is James Gatz. He changed it in an effort to leave behind his old life as a poor boy and create an entirely new identity. He is also a liar and a criminal, having accumulated his wealth and position by dishonest means. But he is still called ‘great,’ and in a sense he is. Gatsby is made great by his unfaltering hope, and his determination to live in a perfect world with Daisy and their perfect love. Gatsby has many visible flaws—his obvious lies, his mysterious way of avoiding straight answers. But they are shadowed over by his gentle smile and his visible hunger for an ideal future. The coarse and playful Jay
It is revealed that James Gatz created the persona of Jay Gatsby. As the novel continues it becomes apparent that James Gatz no longer exists and that Gatz has completely internalised Jay Gatsby making it his true identity. This appears to have damaging effects on Gatsby that we find out throughout the novel, however Gatsby appears to be in denial about these
Jay Gatsby lies about how he got his money and , leaving everyone in his past behind. Gatsby says he comes from wealth “I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family
Andrew Dillon points out that James Gatz, the son of a ineffectual Midwestern farmer, is the son of God in his own self idealization of who he should be (54). We already know that his parents were poor and unsuccessful, and Gatsby couldn't accept them for that so he promotes his actual name to what he thinks should be his real name: the elegant and appealing Jay Gatsby. Now that Gatsby has left James Gatz behind and is a new person he begins to look for more.
Jay Gatsby is similar to Jesus because of his humility and selflessness. First of all, both of them come from humble beginnings.
“I suppose he’d had the name ready for a long time, even then. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people – his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God – a phrase which if it means anything, means just that – and he must be about His Father’s business, the service of vast, vulgar and meretricious beauty. So he invented just the sort of
Two characters that may have struck the audience to have nothing in common but internally have many similarities. They might have completely different actions in situations, different looks on the way of life, and different goal in the end of their time, but are very similar in certain aspects. These two characters are Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway. Jay Gatsby is a middle aged man that came from nothing but has now has worked his way to have “everything.” He came from a poor family but became incredibly rich. He did not achieve his success in the best way, but he made it. He owns a huge mansion on West Egg that he would have never been able to afford in his past. Nick Carraway is the narrator of the story. So, the readers get to actually hear
Another rap artist she used in her argument was Shawn Carter, also known as Jay-Z. Jay-Z did not have a father as he grew up. Both Tupac and Jay-Z grew up as adolescents, who sold drugs, had guns, lived in the ghetto, and had a mentality of a thug or gangster. Even though they had those cons, they both rapped about being good parents will prevent your kids to be like them. “The fact that child abandonment is also a theme in hip-hop might help explain what otherwise appears as a commercial puzzle—namely, how particular music moved from the fringes of black entertainment to the every center of the Every teenager mainstreams” (Eberstadt). Hip-hop music does not only symbolize adolescent black teens, but also disobedient white teens.
Jay Gatsby or as he was originally known as, James Gatz of North Dakota changed his name at the age of seventeen, when he started his career. Romance, love, and destiny. Connections are formed like bridges built of various things; love, trust, money, fate. Some bridges are stronger than others and some bridges connect people who perhaps shouldn’t be connected. The movie “The Great Gatsby” better expresses the romantic relationships and connections between characters. Between Tom and Daisy, whose relationship may have more to do with survival than love, with Myrtle and Tom, the bridge between them connecting two souls searching for something more in life. And then there are bridges like the one between Jordan and Nick, filled with lies and a bridge not often travelled, and if you’re lucky you come across a bridge like Gatsby and Daisy's, which is made of love but filled with obstacles. These bridges play a key part in the story and the movie most definitely does a better job at expressing these connections between characters.
