George Washington and John Adams The United States has had a history of remarkable Presidents. Being outstanding leaders, they have shaped our nation in different ways. Not only are they influential, they embody responsibility, trustworthiness, and dignity. George Washington and John Adams both had very distinct Presidencies. Despite their differences, Washington and Adams both got the job done effectively. Representing Virginia, President George Washington was the first President, elected in 1789 at the age of fifty-seven. He was voted unanimously twice by the Electoral College. He was a Federalist. President John Adams was elected in 1797 at the age of sixty-one. Serving only one term, he represented Massachusetts and was also a Federalist. Both set many precedents. Washington wanted the President’s title to be Mr. President and the Presidential term could only be two terms. The President’s personality can affect a Presidency greatly. George Washington, a tall, athletic, robust, illustrious man brought several traits to the Presidency. Some may say he was an action hero. Knowing the importance of his job, he was an excellent delegator who was fully secure with himself. He was the embodiment of the Revolution. On the other hand, John Adams had to fill in the high expectations that were set by George Washington’s Presidency. Insecure, short, and plump, Adams had poor people skills. He had extreme erratic behavior, would not accept advice from others, and was highly opinionated. Adams was ambitious and craved power. His personality was not suited for the Presidency.
