What is Philanthropy? Who is a Philanthropist? A philanthropist is someone who gives their fortune back to schools, libraries, communities and much more. Andrew Carnegie and Bill Gates did just that. They continue to give away their fortune to help others. Andrew Carnegie and Bill Gates became very wealthy in different ways, shared similarities as well as differences with their works of philanthropy.

After Gates graduated high school, with a perfect 800 on the SAT, he went to Harvard law school in 1973 (“Gates, Bill” 2) (“Gates, William Henry, III” 1). In 1975 his friend Paul Allen came up to him while Bill was in college and showed him a Popular Mechanics article about a $350 microcomputer, Gates read this article and was convinced that he wanted to be in the computer industry (“Gates, William Henry, III” 1). As a sophomore in college he and Paul Allen made the computer language BASIC compatible to microcomputers, this took much skill and he was the first to do it (Leaders of info 2). He did this for a company called MITS (Leaders of info 2). This shows his motivation to do well in the world, and to be successful. With this new success in the BASIC software, he dropped out of Harvard and went to pursue his new career (“Gates, Bill 1). He went to Albuquerque, New Mexico with Paul and they both founded a new company called Microsoft to mass produce their new software (Leaders of Info 2).

Gates and his friend, Paul Allen, had spent hours on programming until late hours at the University of Washington near his family home. What was an addiction to programming and 10,000 hours later for Allen and Gates, lead to being a successful launch of the well-known Microsoft program. Although Gates’ hard work paid off, he was fortunate to have access and opportunities to use computer technology when very few had the chance to come near a computer.

Bill Gates first took an interest in computer programming when he was 13 years old, while attending school. The school used funds from sales and donations and was able to purchase the students an ASR-33 Teletype terminal and computer time on a General Electric computer terminal. Bill, instantly intrigued, was able to get excused from his regular classes to work with the computer. Bill, then, gained his interest in computer programming. He was able to develop a program where the students could play the computer in a game of tic-tac-toe. This was the beginning of Bill Gates career (Bill Gates, 2011).

Steve Jobs and JK Rowling are both very successful people that have overcome tremendous difficulties. Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford focused on three stories. The first story’s topic being connecting the dots, this refers to the idea that no matter what happens one must trust that they can look in the past and connect all the dots to where they are currently. Everything that one does leads up to where they are currently and one must trust themselves, it is that concept that Steve refers to when he says connecting the dots. Steve then moves onto the topic of love and loss. Steve was a person who, fortunately, found what he loved doing at a very early age. Steve also unfortunately encountered various problems which led to several losses. Steve ends his speech on the idea that one should live everyday like it is their last alive. JK Rowling has the subjects that failure has benefits and imagination can be used to sympathize as well as manipulate. Comparing both commencement speeches Steve Jobs delivered his message the most effectively using rhetoric. Both speakers include their history with struggles that they overcame, this demonstrates ethos which established their credibility. Steve Jobs and JK Rowling are both known to be incredibly successful and do to this fact they are already credible, but both went further to explain how they got to where they are now.
