Whether or not you consider Ron Howard's version of Dr Seuss's classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas comical, yet disgraceful, there's no ignoring the little green monster's reign over the box office. The movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey, was released in November of 2000, reaching a gross high of over $200 million in the U.S alone (The Numbers). However, I feel that this version has over exaggerated the original story, and I will back this up by showing many examples of how Dr. Seuss’s classic turned into a marketing, franchise frenzy.

The book "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a story of life in an Alabama town in the 30's. The narrator, Jean Louise Finch, or Scout, is writing of a time when she was young, and the book is in part the record of a childhood, believed to be Harper Lee’s, the author of the book..

From the late 1800s to the mid 1900s there was a lot of controversy within the United States concerning race. Due to this time being very unconstitutional, it inspired many articles and books on the topic. Such as the article, A Brief History of Jim Crow and the book To Kill A Mockingbird. In reading both A Brief History of Jim Crow and To Kill A Mockingbird, I found many similarities between the two. First, everything is segregated by race. Second, false accusations were always being made against colored people, and white supremacy was largely believed. Lastly, violence wasn’t an uncommon subject to hear about when concerning colored people. Keeping different races apart was a huge priority in the South.

It is an unimaginable thought that something so similar can be missing so much. They can be both so unique and incomparable. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the main character, Scout and her brother Jem fight prejudice through a young person perspective. The main characters go on a journey against Bob Ewell throughout the sleepy town of Maycomb, at the 1930’s. Bob Ewell has falsely accused Tom Robinson of a crime. On the process the characters grow a lot and find things that spark their curiosity. This makes an interesting plot with many turns. The movie, To Kill a Mockingbird, has many differences from its book, many plots and characters are missing which greatly impacts the movie directed by Robert Mulligan.

The classic book “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the movie “Remember the Titans” deals with the concept of social injustice in terms of racial prejudice through the setting and characters. Both stories took place in a time where in Southern areas, people were treated very poorly based on their race. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, one of the main characters, Atticus Finch, was a white lawyer who was fighting to acquit a black man, Tom Robinson. Tom was being accused of sexually assaulting a white woman named Mayella Ewell, even though a lot of evidence in the case indicated that he was innocent. The jury declared Tom was guilty because of the racial prejudice against him.

In today's world, many small changes have been made in regard to racism. In the movie To Kill A Mockingbird, author Harper Lee presented the changes made in the way black people were viewed. In the movie Selma, Director Ava Duvernay revealed the struggle many had to endure in order to achieve the right to vote. Despite the success of these small problems, racism is still a big problem in today’s society. As revealed in To Kill A Mockingbird and Selma, even though small changes have occured, big change and a potential solution to the problem has still yet to happen in today’s world.

Scout explains how differently she and Aunt Alexandra see the world. Scout is way younger, but has a more mature understanding of people than Aunt Alexandra.

To kill A Mockingbird and The Diary of Anne Frank both address a young girls journey to maturity amidst a society prone to prejudice and racism. If someone was to compare the views, actions and environment that Anne Frank had grown admits, to that of Scout Finch, it would be very unlikely to find many differences. Growing up, Anne and felt isolated from society. Despite, the racism and prejudice environment they grew up in, both had hopes that the future would change for the better. Although, Anne and Scout were physically and emotionally similar, Anne matured while Scout didn’t through their journeys in the novel.

As most everyone knows, there are differences between a book and it’s movie adaptation. This is applicable to the book and it’s movie counterpart To Kill a Mockingbird, as well. But aside from the differences, there are also similarities between these two.

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee and film 12 Angry Men directed by Sidney Lumet, both touch on similar themes of justice and prejudice. When contrasting the two texts it is evident that there are many foils which display their own strong personal characteristics yet keep those themes at the core of their character. Generally, influence is a result of conformity, when people begin to make change in their actions and heart, others follow suit to feel included. This is the case in the texts, individuals manage to convince groups of people by creating a norm to be followed. It is more so a case of influencing individuals who in turn convince others. This is because people like to feel included, and not as though they are outcasts.

“Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction.”( Erich Fromm) In the story, A Christmas Carol, By Charles Dickens. The main character is a greedy man named Ebenezer Scrooge who has no Christmas spirit. Scrooge starts off in the story with no joy in his life. He is then visited by the ghost of his former coworker, who says that the Scrooge will be visited by three spirits who show him the past, present, and the future. There are many similarities between the drama and the movie.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is novel told through the eyes of Jean Louise Finch, AKA Scout. This young girl is forced to stick close to her father and older brother as the stark reality of some people’s prejudice and ignorance is thrust upon her. These events give Scout a new perspective on those around her and a new respect for the ways others choose to live their lives. Harper Lee uses many different techniques to convey the emotions and occurrences throughout Scout’s life and the most prevalent of those is flashbacks. They’re used to build a mood, provide background info and show the resolution.

History Paper Is there a connection from To Kill A Mockingbird to history? The answer is absolutely and there is a lot of connection to history. To Kill A Mockingbird is a story about how Atticus Finch takes a case about a black man being accused of rape. Tom, the man who is being accused, is innocent but the town's racism gets in the way of his trial. Jim Crow Laws, mob mentality, and racism play a big part in To Kill A Mockingbird.

Truman Capote’s story A Christmas Memory, is about Capote’s childhood memory of a particular holiday season and how he enjoyed that moment in time with a special friend. Capote is illustrated by the main character, Buddy. Buddy and his distant cousin have a bonding friendship and tell of their exploits during that Christmas. They pick out a very special Christmas tree, make each other presents, and make fruitcakes.
