The effect of being Plains Indians located on a reservation in Oklahoma during the 1900. Between 1865 and 1900 there have numerous events that have occurred for the plains Indians that changed their way of thinking, and their way of life here in the United States of America. It all started with as a simple introduction of the horses, buffalo, boarding schools, loss of land and major attacks on the Indians.

The Sioux and Chippewa Indian tribes’ have a drastically different way of living compared to what other people are accustomed to in terms of their history, food , and their roles in their tribes. The Sioux Indians were originally from Asia, but migrated to America about 30,000 years ago. Their long, straight jet-black hair resembles that of the Asian descendants. The Sioux tribes were located in The Great Plains, which consists of 7 different states Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota; however, they were also known to live in parts of Nebraska, Illinois, and Montana. “The name Sioux is an abbreviation of Nadouessioux. (Britannica) The name was given to them by the Ojibwa (Chippewa). Sioux means, “Little snake”. The Sioux tended to follow the pattern of the buffalo, which is why they are found in multiple locations.

"My People the Sioux" is a good literary work written in 1928. This book leaves an everlasting impression with some because it definitely intensifies the sympathy for the Indians. Luther Standing Bear, also known as Plenty Kill, portrays the dramatic and traumatic changes about the Sioux throughout their traditional way of life. As a young boy growing up, he experienced many of these hardships first hand between his people and the whites. This autobiography is quite valuable as it helps allow us to envision what really happened in the battling times of the Indians. Luther stated this quote, which to me, is unforgettable and very well said. It reads:

The Great Plains and far West were occupied by both Indians and Hispanics whose custom and way of live were distinct in language religion and kinship and governance. The white settlers and hunters were a threat to the resources in which they used for survival.

The Blackfoot Indians had a unique culture that was very important to them. The Blackfeet speak Algonquian, an eastern native language, this made many believe that the Blackfeet migrated to the Great Plains from the eastern woodlands many centuries before Europeans came to America. This made them one of the oldest Great Plains tribes. Their culture revolves around warfare. They mostly eat bison (buffalo) and horse. Since, the Blackfeet were nomadic they lived in Buffalo-skin tipis, that could be moved easily. They depended on the buffalo everywhere the went. The buffalo was used for their food, clothing, shelter, and equipment. They had no interests in art . For example, pottery and basketry. The Blackfeet also occasionally hunted other game, such as deer, moose, and elk. The women

The Cheyenne tribe was normally located by the Great Plains present day South Dakota. South Dakota had hot summers and cold winters, their location also had good hunting and grass covered prairies with some streams and rivers. So they had good planting. Some of the animals they hunted were bison also known as buffalo, elks, cougars, deer, bears, porcupines, beavers, eagles, antelopes, and wolves. The geography of the Cheyenne tribe was very well located.

The Cheyenne was one of the most famous tribes of the Native American Indians. They lived on the Great Plains in what is now South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas. During the 1800’s, the U.S. government forced the Cheyennes to move to Oklahoma. Today, there are two Cheyenne tribes. The Southern Cheyenne live in Oklahoma while the Northern Cheyenne settle in Montana.

Homes in the Cherokee villages were often located near rivers. They were made of rivercane and plaster. Roofs were thatched which meant it was made from dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge, rushes, or heather. The houses, though made of what seems weak materials, were nearly as strong as log cabins. Larger buildings were built for ceremonial purposes. Each of the indian villages has a ballpark for entertainment. Each village had a palisade around it for protection from other tribes. Nowadays, Cherokees live in a home or an apartment just like an average American.

One Native American tribe in the southeastern region is the Cherokee tribe. The Cherokee tribe was the largest tribe in the southeastern region. They lived in log cabins instead of tee pees the cabins were circular they were made from various materials including cane, plaster, and sticks.. They were mostly farmers. they ate corn, squash, and beans the men however, hunted deer, bear, and turkeys The men of the tribe wore leggings and breechcloth. A breechcloth is a long rectangular piece of clothing. The women wore wraparound skirts made from fiber and deerskin. Men covered themselves with tribal tattoo art and painted themselves bright when they were in a war, but the women did not paint themselves. During the 19th century, the Shawnee tribe was removed by the U.S. Government to what is now the state of Kansas. The group which became known as the Absentee Shawnee Tribe absented itself from the reservation in Kansas in 1845 (thus their name), and traveled southwards to Texas.
