Spring: The Dakotas tribe were returning to their camps when Spring had arrived. They got straight to tapping the maple trees.They would use the syrup for sugar and hard candies. The Lakota tribe members have been living in the Black Hills for many years and perform many ceremonies at the Tower. One of the project areas I have consistently participated in is home improvement. My first year of 4-H, I made a bulletin board that had my name, along with pictures and quotes that represented me to hang up in my room. I remember my judge specifically telling me that she prefers to have a piece of felt or cork on the back of your project when you hang it on the wall to prevent it from scratching your wall. She also told me to look at the colors and make sure they all coordinate; those were both things I didn’t think about when making the project. I saved all of my judges notes, and the year after I read them all before and after creating a project to make sure I didn’t make the same mistakes twice. Each year I enter in this area, I improve my projects by applying all the tips I’ve learned previously and even more. This year, I also learned about the rule of three. The rule of three means that when you’re decorating, it’s better to have three objects rather than two. My judge told me odd numbers always look better in a room than evens, which is now just another trick I can use for future ideas and projects.

The Sioux Indian was a really popular Indian in the northern states. The Sioux have lived there for many years until they got pushed out of their homes and new comers came in and take it all away. The early Sioux population had over 2800 people. They lived in the northern great plains in the lands that are now the northern states of north Dakota,south Dakota,Wisconsin,and Minnesota.

My research paper is about the fierce Navajo Indians. The Navajos were a very intense group of Native Americans and were greatly feared by a lot of the surrounding tribes. They were one of last known group of Native Americans to arrive Southwest. The warriors got most of their livestock and horses from stealing them from the surrounding tribes and settlers. According to Mele and Magliocca authors of The Navajos “The Navajo Indians migrated from Canada in 1000 A.D and migrated to the four corners of New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona.” The Navajos lived on a reservation that was 14,000 square miles. When people are asked to voice their opinion about what the word “Indian” truly entails, many refer to the countless stories, photographs, and films particularly related to them. One such group, the Sioux are a great example of the many inaccurate depictions history has burden them with. They are seen first and foremost as savaged killers who took and never gave back. However, with time much has been revealed to show their true characteristics. It was found that they were not people of war and bloodshed, but merely of honor and strength. Stepping away from the bias, the Sioux nation was an extraordinary group of nomads who survived on the buffalo population, tribal interactions, and family contributions.

The Sioux creation story and the book of Genesis in the Bible both mirror an image of how the world along with human life was created. When forming their creations they were dissimilar in the way they produced water and land. In Genesis God created water by just a spoken word and it would appear. However, the Creating Power would form his creations with objects using his hands to form land from mud the story states “He sang all the while that he shaped the mud in his hands and spread it on the water to make a spot of dry land for himself.” Additionally, he completely covers everything with land by a command and using feathers from an eagle by waving them over the spot he had produced. Both of these stories reveal that in a previous time their God was unpleased with what he had created so he destroyed the world because of the people’s acts of immorality and unruliness. Also, this gives reflection on the role of the natural world being impure, failed and contaminated by sin and only the grace of “God” can save them. When God or the “Creating Power” recreated the world in their effort to maintain order people needed to understand how powerful and almighty they were by being able to create life or to end it.

Though obvious to the name, the American Indian Tribes had much to do with the growth of what we now know of as the US. Long ago when the english settlers came over with Columbus, on the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, they had found that there were people living there, were very different from “the white man”. But the American Indians have been located throughout the states from the very beginning and are still thriving, in some cases. "My People the Sioux" is a good literary work written in 1928. This book leaves an everlasting impression with some because it definitely intensifies the sympathy for the Indians. Luther Standing Bear, also known as Plenty Kill, portrays the dramatic and traumatic changes about the Sioux throughout their traditional way of life. As a young boy growing up, he experienced many of these hardships first hand between his people and the whites. This autobiography is quite valuable as it helps allow us to envision what really happened in the battling times of the Indians. Luther stated this quote, which to me, is unforgettable and very well said. It reads:

In the beginning the settlers created the heavens and the earth. For, America was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the continent. Or was it? Why is it that people automatically assume that America started when the settlers arrived, and that there was nothing before? Sure we can read the cute Native American mythology, but aside from that we don’t talk about America before the settlers. The United States is currently attempting to build a pipeline underneath Lake Oahe that will damage Native American burial sites and will contaminate primary source of drinking water for the Sioux Tribe. First there will be a brief description of what happening with the protest at Standing Rock. Following these facts about this atrocity this paper will begin with a historical summary of the Sioux Tribe, the main set of protesters who are fighting to keep the pipeline from being constructed.
