This hype was called “The Moral Panic. ”A moral panic is said to be the term for an issue that is exploited by the media and moral authorities in society due to its controversial nature. When a media panic occurs, it is usually when an episode, person, group, or condition emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests. This occurs when the situation is stylized in stereotypical fashion by the mass media including people who are usually “right thinking people”. (Cohen, 1973) When the moral structure of society is seen as threatened, there are many steps that happen that turn the controversy into a media panic. The TV show’s main goal is to be an inside look at the lives of average teenagers as they struggled with substance abuse, emotional issues, and sexuality. Some viewers might go into depth with this meaning, though. This mix of topics led the Parental Television Council (PTC) to strongly oppose the show. The show was rated TV-MA on MTV which means the content is unsuitable for audience members under the age of seventeen. This rating caught the attention of many people and activists groups, such as the Parental Television Council, that would publicly oppose the show’s content. The controversy stirring because of the show involves the Parental Television Council giving a “red light” because the show may include explicit dialogue, violent content, or mainly images that are unsuitable for children. Older viewers refuse to acknowledge the meaning behind the show’s purpose because of these reasons. Throughout the series, there were numberless acts of the violent outburst, alcoholic behaviors, and sexual content all on camera. In a journal written by J. Johnson, he states that “evidence suggests that television’s influence on children and adolescents is related to how much time they spend watching television” (Johnson) and when a child is constantly watching these inappropriate shows they tend to pick up the behavior. First to take a look at the explicit language and violent outburst which can be categorized together as aggression. The show often displays aggressive
Ratings increase budget, etc. However, there must be more consideration for the impact it is creating in society. Parents Television Counsel (PTC) is a non-partisan organization that advocates responsible entertainment. Their mission statement is, “To protect children and families from graphic sex, violence and profanity in the media, because of their proven long-term harmful effects” (PTC, 2015). This is the kind of organization I align myself with personally and professionally by petition support, tracking ads and TV programs and offering
How could this still be on the air? In spite of the prevention act, the programs that are still running had been stripped of their state funding as it was deemed traumatizing for the at-risk teens. This was not going to be the solution that leads them away from drugs and violence. Moving more into the series as a whole, there is a nice coating that covers the false, yet what most would believe to be true as a notion ‘tough on crime. The punishment of criminals is more damning than prevention as others believe it sticks better to the inmate, resulting in a long-standing imprint. Moreover, our justice system is full of idealists that who follow that same mantra causing a flaw to break up the
When I was younger their were more inspirational television shows to watch, such as Thats so Raven, Full House, The Cosby Show an many other television shows that you and your family can sit down and watch together. Today the younger kids do not have anything like those positive television shows to look at anymore. Nowadays we have T.V shows that got to do with cheating, lies, and deceit. What ever happen to those T.V shows that you parents wouldn’t mind you to watch without having their parental advisement. One T.V show that is so disrespectful and degrading to me is the television show “Bad Girls Club.” Bad girls club is a reality television series. It centers on seven rebellious women aged from 21 to 27 with different personalities and backgrounds, who have a number of behavioral problems. its original plot was to try to help seven behavior problem women change their self destructing antics, while they spend three months in a fine mansion with one another, during which they have to go by some specific rules, which they must get kick out of the show if they don’t obey them. The women on the show have negatively influenced the younger viewers with 24/7 drinking and partying, the promiscuity, and the constant fighting. The show fails to show the outcome of the actions the women on the show will have to face in real life, but instead it paints a picture that there are no real consequences to the actions that they chose to follow but getting fame.
* The main focus of many teen dramas is sex, with each episode containing countless verbal and visual references to sexual activity. These highly sexualized portrayals of relationships bear little resemblance to the real lives of teens—and are generally not balanced by clear messages about safe and healthy attitudes towards sex.
In sociology, the term deviance refers to behaviors or attitudes which go against certain cultural norms. It is evident that deviance is a fascinating topic not only for sociologist, but for television industry and its viewers, as well. In recent years, increasing number of shows begun to feature individuals violating every kind of social norm from folkways to taboos. The Secret Life of the American Teenager, an American television series on the ABC Family television network, is one of the many contemporary shows that portray deviant behaviors on national television. It’s intended for the target audience of teens and their families who are trying to cope in a culture where teen girls and boys are sexually active.
Some of the most popular television shows in today’s society are The Biggest Looser, Jersey Shore, and Big Brother. These programs and many others are classified as reality television. Reality television’s main purpose is to attempt to portray ordinary people in unscripted situations. Recently, however, many of these shows have achieved in creating the complete opposite, and have earned an immense amount of criticism as a result. Reality television programs are detrimental to society because they influence bad behavior among teenagers, do not produce authentic real life situations, and they humiliate many of the characters.
During these times, once you turn on your television set you are abruptly notified on yet another absurd act that a celebrity had committed the night before. The media becomes engrossed by the despicable behavior and ravages at it as if it was the final grain of rice. Once they have completed a story that is at the right level of crudeness, they deliver it to the public. The vulgar news reaches households all across the world, and then it soon pollutes the minds of innocent and young children. At a young age, boys and girls commonly compare themselves with reference groups of people who occupy the social role to which they desire. The constant negative and sometimes provocative images that are displayed by celebrities are what define
Television has increasingly become the quintessential epicenter of communication, since its invention, in 1927. At any moment in time 2.5 billion people are viewing some form of television broadcast (Ballard). Modern society has introduced various categories of television. These variations range from educational to violent. This broad spectrum makes it hard to generalize the effects it has had on American youth; however, television seems to have increased moral and intellectual degradation. Through violent shows and monotonous news broadcasts, American youths have become desensitized to the poverties, and hardships of the world. This desensitization has had several, and moreover negative, moral impacts on the youths of America. Nevertheless,
Another unique aspect about this show is that many shows cover controversial issues. However this one covered numerous issues while most plays stick to one or two .And unlike many fictional plays the ending was not resolved but it states that problems are only temporary. In my opinion this show's purpose was to ease tension on topics like sexuality and racism and make it become a normal household

Skins also focuses upon Teenage sexuality, specifically, which I believe is a broad and interesting subject to analyse with many opportunities to elaborate.
There is a great debate on whether or not mass media has an influence on teenage pregnancy. A study done by the RAND Corporation shows that teens are twice as likely to have sex or engage in sexual acts if they see similar sexual behavior in the media. Many objects in the media that involve sex target teens. Reality TV shows and teen dramas often portray the "cool kids" as the ones who are having sex (Chandra).Today’s teens are highly influenced by what they see in the media and this can change their behavior and choices. Some will argue that the media doesn’t influence teenagers, but how can we be sure of that? Kids also have mistaken this show for an excuse to experiment with sexual desires. While high school students are taught to abstain from sex in numerous health classes, they learn from MTV that a lot of teenagers participate in sexual intercourse.
