Slavery in Today’s Society
Human trafficking is something that has gone on for a very long time, beginning as early as the 1400s with slaves being used and traded. As stated by Jones, Hillard, and Diaz (2007), “human trafficking is both a global problem and a domestic problem” (p.108-109), meaning human trafficking affects and takes place all over the world. Overpopulation, poverty, and so forth, are examples of domestic problems; they also increasing the chances of human trafficking taking place. Immigrants are usually the ones exploited for human trafficking with promises of great pay, jobs, living, and comfort. Trafficking, unlike smuggling, is correlated with deception to ultimately achieve exploitation. Since they don’t have rights as citizens, and are technically illegally here, immigrants comply with the orders they are given (Jonas et al., 2007). The United States is where most human traffickers take their victims and is estimated to receive anywhere between 15,000 to 50,000 immigrants yearly, just in the U.S. It’s hard to have an accurate estimate because of how underreported this act goes by. It’s every human being’s responsibility to help prevent victims from suffering from physical and psychological aguish, one from which they’ll never fully overcome having survived human trafficking. Jones et al. (2007) stated, “political unrest, or (having) weak or corrupt infrastructures combined with widespread poverty, are breeding grounds for international criminal networks” (p. 113). Reducing the amount of corrupt officials and increasing the amount of supervision that goes on in both border crossing and local officials, a decrease in trafficking would follow since they’re vital to keep this business
