Slaves, Not Well-Treated Nor Taught

Based on the making of American Capitalism that forced slaves to migrate through harsh treatment in the cotton grounds. Which, later turned America into an economic world power. Slavery was continuing to cause a huge impact on America society (Baptist, wbur,n.d.). The South was a tiring tobacco farmstead to a cotton empire. The slaves were beaten by their owner during the picking cotton plantations.

In the average American’s eyes, there is always assumptions made about slavery and the nature of slavery. Slavery was something that many people relied on for centuries. It is not something that can be easily forgotten and the importance of it cannot be understated. Slavery was simply the bondage of peoples who were then forced into labor on farms or in the city. Believe it or not, slavery did exist outside the standard cotton plantation and tobacco farms in the South. Slavery was all over the southern part of the country whether on a farm or in the ever-expanding cities. Slaves could also be found in small farms and towns.

The south for a good while was always fond of using slavery as a cheap source of work. The increase in the number of slaves was when John Rolfe became one of the first to cultivate tobacco in the so called “New World back then in the 17th century. There was good money to be made about the amount of labor that went into the tobacco cultivation was harch, hence why slaves were used. Ever since then, it is obvious to note that slaves dominated the aspect of southern life. Whether that be economically, socially or politically, slaves played an important role in each category.

Slavery was a huge issue that both helped and hurt the Union during the Civil War, and later in the Reconstruction. African Americans had to make sacrifices in order to make reality their dream of being freed from the chains of slavery. America reached many changes through the beginnings of Civil Rights legislations, the changes in the power of government, as well as the amount of racism and it’s effects on society.

The Southern United States has had quite an intriguing past. It is famously known for the struggle for African-American civil rights, which took place in the mid-1900s. However, there remains one past practice which seems to have overshadowed the rest: slavery. Slavery played a large part in how the South operated and was culturally perceived. Growing up in in the South, Mark Twain developed his opinions of the region upon what occurred there. He expressed his view of the history, society, and culture of the South in his many literary works.

By the time we became a country in 1776, slavery was engrained in many of our founding fathers minds as the source of economic wellbeing. In Dungey’s videos, Ask a Slave, every episode shows great ignorance of Americans today about slaves in the past. In episode one of Dungey's videos, it says “ how did you get to be housemaid for such a distinguished founding father did you see the advertisement in the newspaper did I read the advertisement in the newspaper” (ASK A SLAVE). This is showing that some Americans can be very ignorant. This time frame was around 1789-1797, meaning there were no newspapers around this time frame. Also, there was no printing press to just print thousands of copies of newspapers for everyone to have and get before the news was out of date.
