There are many different types of sleeping disorders that may affect the way you sleep at night and act during the day. A sleeping disorder is a change in your sleep cycle or a quirk that can negatively affect your health. They prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. Although they sound harsh, most sleeping disorders can be treated or can improve with treatment. According to scientists, there are roughly 80 types of sleeping disorders. Four of the most common ones are: insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy. Insomnia is separated into 3 different types: transient, acute, and chronic. Transient insomnia occurs when your symptoms last for only a couple of days. Acute, or short-term insomnia, occurs when your symptoms last for a few weeks. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which your breathing is interrupted during sleep. There are two separate forms of sleep apnea, one is obstructive and the other is central. Obstructive sleep apnea is when the tissue in your throat collapses and blocks your airway, and central sleep apnea is when your brain doesn't signal your muscles to breathe. This disorder can be caused if you: smoke, are an overweight male, have high blood pressure, or have a neck circumference larger than 15.75 inches. A few of the symptoms of sleep apnea are: extremely loud snoring, choking during sleep, shortness of breath, daytime fatigue, waking up with a sore throat, or using the restroom a lot at night. Sleep apnea can be treated with a machine called the CPAP device. The CPAP device is a mask machine that provides a stream of air through your nose and mouth. This device keeps your airways clear at all times, while you sleep. Another way to treat it is by having a tonsillectomy or an adenoid removal.
