The type designer I chose to research is named Robert Slimbach. He is very well known for his contributions to graphic design, being the designer of many widely used typefaces such as Myriad, renditions of Garamond, Minion, and ITC Slimbach.
Slimbach was born in 1956, in Illinois, but moved to Southern California, where he grew up, not long after that. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles on a scholarship for athletics, but it was after college when his interest in graphic design and typography began to flourish. This inspired him to start up a small print shop business– with this shop, Slimbach focused on the manufacturing of greeting cards and posters. This was how he first got recognition in the world of graphic design.

Graphic design set its first roots in Germany in 1455 with the introduction of the Blackletter typeface and Johannes Gutenberg’s Gutenberg Bible. Grunge typography has become more popular during the 90s and it appeared to be a very messy and chaotic kind of design. Words, Textures, backgrounds that formed posters and ads for various things were designed in a very interesting and different typography style. The father of the grunge typography was an art director named David Carson. David Carson was known for designing various magazines and he became well known for his experimental, deconstructive typographic designs and art direction for Ray Gun magazine.
In studying the history of typedesign, it has become apparent that the majority of type designers in earlier history were men. Today, there are scores of women practicing type design, with their areas of focus ranging from digital fonts to calligraphy. Carol Twombly is a present-day type designer whose typographical achievements have gained recognition on both a national and international level. Twombly began her schooling at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she started off studying sculpture, and later shifted her focus to graphic design. Her formal education continued at Stanford University, where she graduated with Masters of Science degrees in computer science and typographic design. Beginning in 1988, Twombly worked

Soon after he joined Ray Gun, a rock and roll magazine for about three years and during that time their subscribers tripled. While there, Carson designed a layout for an article about Bryan Ferry, an English musician. This article became infamous for his use of type. Carson had a way of approaching design; he felt it should come from within and be intuitive, while reflecting emotions, thoughts and views. When reading this article and trying to interpret it, Carson felt it was rather dull. After looking through many various kinds of fonts he could not find one that fit his interpretations. Eventually he settled with Zapf Dingbats- a font created by the typographer Herman Zapf in 1978 which consists
