Alphonsine Sabiyumva English 12 9/04/2014 Smart Phones in Class Rooms One of the worst massacre murders to ever occur in an American High School building was the 1999 shooting rampage at Columbine High school in Littleton Colorado. There were 12 students and one teacher who lost their lives because of this incident. Some schools across the country made new policies to allow students to carry cell phones as a means to feel safe. After this incident however, there were schools that continue to ban them. Those schools that don’t allow cell phones feel they cause distractions in class and can be used to cheat on a tests. Although there is a risk of students cheating in the class due to cell phones, some schools have let their students use …show more content…
Imagine if these students that were murdered were in the same class rooms that we are In; or another student parents that goes to ; they didn’t have a cell phone to be able to call their parents to tell me them what is happening and to contact the emergency room. Their parents could get very worried and don’t have a chance to talk to their child since they don’t have cell phones. In today’s world there is a lot of students that bully others or get in many fights, when that happens a lot of students do not have cell phone to be able to call for help or able to contact their parents, or another teacher for help or call the police for help. Another major reason that students should be able to their cell phone in a class room was in of 1929, the St. Valentine massacre happened in Chicago IL. The massacre was the worse gang related killing that’s ever recorded, the victims that were a part of the massacre was young children. Majority of secondary schools has a lot of gang violence going on. So it cause schools to go on lock downs due to things that have happened around the school. So, for the student’s safety, just in case the school goes on lock frag down. Their parents would need to know. So the students could just call or text their parents and tell them what’s going on. Imagine if one of the students from our district was around there and he are she don’t have a cell to contact somebody are if that massacre takes a place on a
Higgins wrote, “The issue of security and red alerts on terrorism threats became an issue, and school systems began to relax the prohibition on cellphones in schools.” Schools are relaxing the harsh ban, and understanding the benefits of cell phones in school. The issues of security and red alerts are a threat, and are becoming an issue in the school systems which make this a valid reason. While cell phones do not prevent the threats, they do allow for help faster. This is a valid reason because cell phones in school can save lives. They can prevent more people from being injured during a school shooting and they can be used as a way to get help when there are no other ways of doing so. In brief, cell phones in school should be allowed because they are beneficial resources in times of security and red
When in emergencies kids usually turn to their electronics to contact others for help. Students want to have reassurance and know that if any inconvenience occur they can reach their parents or others as soon as possible. Most parents and children like to stay in touch with one another at all times. Especially if there's a change of plans after school or if there's any accidents that appeared and need to be evacuated immediately. Aside from, rivals say that students are most likely to lose their cell phones. In the meantime, students would be responsible and put it in a safe place at the appropriate time. For these reasons, cell phones should be tolerated on school property in cases of
In the article Cell Phone in School, written by Beverly Ballaro and Jill Ginsburg they give many good examples why cell phones should be in school. In school many teachers really don't like their students to have cell phones but they make come in handy if their was a school shooting. The document states, “After the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School and the September 2001 terrorist attacks, however, many schools eased restrictions on cell phones use in middle and high schools.” This is such a genius idea to allow kids to have phone at school because if another attack occurs then the students with phone will be able to call either their parents or the police. There can also be different situations other than attacks where phones
People all around the world have many electronic devices, and there are abundant amounts of freedom that come with them. There are so many different technologies to choose from, but one that seems to be quite common among people of all ages, are cell phones. Such technology is great for many uses, but it is not always appropriate in certain settings. The principal at my school has adopted a new policy that bans the use of cell phones during school hours. I support my principal’s decision. Cell phones can be distractions in many ways to students during school. They can cause conflicts between fellow students and between students and teachers. Allowing cell phones during school hours also basically gives students permission to not pay
In school systems today safety is the top priority that they spend most of their time enforcing rules for this specific reason. After hearing about the Columbine school shooting I can only imagine the pain their parents felt while receiving the news. If the students had access to their cell phones could this have turned out differently? Dr. Stroka talks in a school safety video that you have to put a face on school safety and most people have forgotten what that’s about (Ken Trump). If students have access to phones it betters the chance of getting help right away in life threatening
Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school 's most easily accessible phone was on the complete other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could 've used to contact the authorities more quickly. The issue we are addressing today is the usage of cellular devices in educational facilities. Both Cameron and myself believe that cell phone usage is of extreme convenience, and has academically beneficial
What would happen if we had an emergency at home and we would be participating in shut down your screen week. We wouldn’t be able to inform of what was happening. Us as students would get in trouble for trying to get to our phones. Our parents could call us or text or us not to go home if they heard there was someone suspicious around our neighborhood. We wouldn’t be able to get that warning call or text that could save our lives. My friends house once got robbed while she was at school and her parents tried to warn her by a text but she was told she must keep her phone of at school When she got off the bus and headed home she walked right up to the robbery. So if that were to happen to us our parents wouldn’t be able to reach
tragedies, various school boards reversed cell phone bans and/or loosened rules governing student use of cell phones on campus.” (Trump). After these attacks, school boards realized that parents needed to have some sort of way to know how their children are because they may think that their son or daughter were killed. An Ebsco Host article detailed the reason for this shift in policy, saying that it was “...driven by safety concerns of both parents and teens...” (Ballaro, Ginsburg).
We should not get rid of phones. Ballaro and Beverly claim that ”policy changes, driven by safety concerns of both parents and teens, fueled a national debate over whether the safety benefits of cell phones outweighed their potential to create a nuisance that interferes with learning.” Also, they believe “after the 1999 shootings at columbine high school and the september terrorist attacks, however, many schools eased restrictions on cell phones use in middle and high schools.” Supporters point out that vast numbers of parents and children depend on cell phones to communicate their daily life whereabouts and activities.” We should not get rid of cellphones there are many uses for phones. Cell Phones are people main lifestyle and use for everything
The increase of school shootings and threats has encouraged parents to allow their children to carry cell phones to school. Cell phones have successfully been
Picture this, there has been a school lockdown, the suspect cut the landlines so no one could call the police for a rescue. However, the suspect was captured by the police much faster than he imagined. The last scene wouldn’t have happened if it was one decade ago, because cell phones were not popular in schools then. When it comes to cell phones, some people think they should not be permitted in schools, and other people think they should be permitted in schools. I agree with the latter opinion for the following reasons: Cell phones are an efficient way to communicate when emergencies occur in school; cell phones can be a great tool for learning during school hours; and the current prohibitive rules on cell phones are merely fruitless
If we had phones with us, we would be able to call emergency services for help, rather than be sitting ducks with our phones in our lockers. In the case of a school shooting, someone could easily take their phone out of their pocket and dial 911, but you can’t do that if you don't have a phone with you. When students call 911, they can easily tell the school, what’s happening, and everything the operator needs to know so first responders will quickly come out. We aren’t allowed to have our phones in school, so when your kid is put in a sticky situation, will they make it out
If officials could look through students phones, the community would be a lot safer. For example, If students are being mean to one another and are causing a disruption in class, then officials need to see what's going on, so they can stop it. “If a student is bothering another student, the school could address the problem before the dispute gets physical,” Joseph Maneen said. If students are getting rough with one another, they may bring it to school and cause a fight, or even get more students involved. In addition, If students are posting inappropriate things, then the officials need to put an end to it. “Young people need to learn that when you post something on the internet, there are consequences,” says Joseph Maneen. If students are threatening the school or others, the school will need to know about it, to keep the school safe. Furthermore, If students are planning something unsafe to the school, the officials could stop it before it happened, if they check the students personal devices. “The sheriffs took Diaz’s cell phone from his pocket and scrolled through the text messages. They found one
phones can be such a threat to schools and kids that some people would feel that their life is in
Cell phones in schools are a prominent reason why cyberbullying rates are on the rise. Cyberbullying is a crucial topic to discuss, with the amount of cyberbullying on the rise, a rise in teen suicide rates is also prevalent. Coinciding with that, students that are being bullied or are being distracted and not doing well in school are more likely to have suicidal thoughts and actions. Along with teen suicide increasing, test scores are decreasing from the application of cell phones in class. Therefore, cell phones and schools DO NOT mix. Schools should prohibit cell phones on school campuses, hallways and classrooms.
