This blog is based on the concept that “How to use Social Media and how can anyone decide what type of contents are appropriate for Social Media” It was clearly mentioned by Jon Ronson’s book ‘So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed’ that how can one incidence that goes on social media, can cause life time public shame to an individual. This book in its initial stage mentioned many phases which seems to be quite hilarious on one hand and serious on the other hand. All these forces individuals to think that one need to prejudice about the consequences of one mistake. Jon Ronson in his books narrates few incidents like his fake twitter account which was being handled by three academicians namely Luke Robert mason, David Bausola & Dan O’Hara. When
Statistics show that public humiliation is one of the most common fears. As many admit to this fear, many also grasp to this concept and shame one another for absurd conditions. In the Puritan Era, many methods were used to publicly shame someone for their wrong doing. One of their common methods was to openly tell their “sin” to the whole community. One of their extreme approaches was hanging someone. This showed the public to follow the regulations of the town and do not do anything against them. Fast forward to modern times, the scheme of humiliating one another changed drastically. For instance, many occurrences pertain from social media. In 1994, the first site of social media was created. From this point on, millions of different sites
It’s common to argue that a perpetrator “deserves” to be shamed, but in fact human psychology doesn’t work this way. Many pedophiles, for instance, recognize that that they are inexorably—even biologically—bound to impulses that they themselves loathe. Does the shaming—through public registries for example—cause the pedophile to reform? Unlikely. Does it deter others from engaging in pedophilic acts, or does it drive them to darker corners and sneakier tactics?
For example, Ronson says “A shaming can be like a distorting mirror at a funfair, taking human nature and making it look monstrous” (Ronson 237). Ronson shows how common human mistakes, such as posting things on social media without thinking can destroy someone. People take something an individual has said and makes them out to be someone they are not.
This book focuses on how social media is used in today’s society as well as how each type of social media is developed. It gives the goals and strategies of
In the books “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding and “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” by Jon Ronson, both produce the theme of savagery. The books bring out the worse in humans when their face in hidden from modern society. Although, the both books create an inhuman society, “Lord of the Flies” is in a individual civilization where interactions are face to face; while “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” has community through the internet. There is a loss of innocence between each worlds because there is freedom of savagery.
A common advice given to parents trying to discipline a misbehaving child is to address the problematic behaviour rather than accusing the child. Telling the child that not only what he did, but he is the problem will only reinforce the negative feelings that led to misbehaviour in the first place. However, few people seem to realize that this mechanism stays the same as we grow up. In any case, I believe that attacking the individual rather than denouncing their actions is bullying.
Social media has now become a part of our modern day society and has a huge impact on our lives on a daily basis. Social media is the use of web and mobile-based technology to support interactive content. The 21st century is defined by its obsession and advancements in technology, the younger generation in particular. Technology plays as a key factor in most lives, social media especially. Among the most popular of social media are Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, all with the main purpose to share or view personal information and experiences, communicate with others and meet new people on social or professional grounds. There are several positives and negatives effects associated with social media, making it a topic of debate whether it is creating more good or harm for today’s society.
“Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change”(Brené Brown). In The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a woman is publicly shamed for having a child with a man who is not her husband. Another example of public shame can be seen in modern day articles “Florida ‘Scarlet Letter’ Law is Repealed by Gov. Bush,” by Dana Canedy, and “Houston Couple Gets ‘The Scarlet Letter’ Treatment.” Both talk of public shame that people have had to endure in the present day. Public shaming is not an effective punishment because it is a cruel and unusual punishment, it does not deter crime, and it can emotionally traumatize the one being shamed.
There are two types of media, and each type has his way to broadcast the information. “These two types are traditional and-social” (Hayles K., 2004). Traditional media includes: radio, magazines, newspapers, television, different publications and so on. Social media is the process of the informational interchange. In recent years, social media became part of everybody’s life. People exchange the information, opinions, news everywhere: in blogs, social networks, forums, etc. People became sources to each other. The importance of social media is rising extremely.

Social media is any website that allows social interaction. Social media is growing rapidly throughout the world. More adults and teenagers are joining sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter to interact with friends, family, and strangers. The introduction of social media has changed the world in many ways. It affects each individual in different ways. While there are some negatives associated with social media, the positives in communication all around, has made the world stronger and a better place to live in.
On my journey to explore whether social media is a blessing or a curse, I ended up with several dramatic consequences. As Scott Brickman, in the article, “the advancement of the communication media,” points out “the boon in lights of the technology.” He proves that Social networking has become a necessary part of our communication culture that cannot be disregarded easily. He also
The term ‘social media’ has become a broad-term to describe a large number of online systems that serve as a platform for the generation, and distribution of user-generated content. Social media creates a virtual social space, where a large number of users come together and interact with one another. These interactions can be either structured, such as responses that are moderated on blogs, semi-structured, such as a discussion between an extended network on Facebook, or unstructured, such as the anarchial functioning of Twitter.
