The Determinants of Health and Unemployment

Social determinants of health are factors that help influence the health and well-being of humans.
Social determinants of health occur in all walks of life. Whether it is mental or physical they can be closely related to one another. The ways in which life is laid out for us will determine the future; your personal circumstances are correlated to your socioeconomic status. There is a direct link between health inequality and social determinants (World Health Organization, 2017). The Dahlgren and Whitehead's, 1991 rainbow model is an excellent way to explain the variable potential links between an individual’s relationship, their environment and health. It has various layers that highlight factors that can have an impact on health and can be modified to improve outcomes. For example, the first layer illustrates the personal behaviour and the capability to empower change. The next layer is to support and influence communities that can manage or damage health. Finally, the remaining layers include an individual’s living and working environment (Dahlgren and Whitehead, 1991, cited in Naidoo and Wills, 2016, P.22-23). Consequently, there are many determinants of health such as education, unemployment, and housing. This essay is going to exam unemployment as a detrimental health factor, as it is a major health risk factor, covering both mental and physical health aspects.

There is a significant link between involuntary job loss and detrimental physical health effects. To live a healthy lifestyle, you need to have a nutrient diet, moderate exercise and avoid products that can lead to ill health. Being active not only improves your physical health and mental health, it reduces your chances of becoming a statistic, it is estimated that 3.2 million deaths each year are owing to inadequate physical activity (World Health Organization, 2008). With nearly 2,500 people in Scotland dying prematurely each year due to inadequate exercise, this is the most common risk of heart disease (Scottish Government, 2017a).
