Social influence is an essential focus of study for researchers and social psychologists. Social influence pertains to different methods utilized by individuals to impact the feelings, behaviors and beliefs of others through interpersonal relationship (Fiske, 2008). Also, some key concepts in the analysis of social influence include conformity, compliance, and obedience. Compliance refers to a change in performance in response to an overt or an obscure demand made by a different individual. Hence, compliance is viewed as a dynamic form of social influence due to the emphasis on intentionality in initiating a change in behavior. Also, compliance is conceptualized as a consequence of variations in internal belief, attitudes or emotional state of a person (Fiske, 2008). On the contrary, conformity denotes instances while individuals alter their attitudes, behaviors, beliefs and feelings to fit in a group norm. Hence, members of a group change their views and actions consequently. However, obedience exemplifies a shift in actions in response to a command from an authority figure. Conformity is a concept that has been heavily researched in the field of social psychology. Conformity is defined as a change in behavior, beliefs, and attitudes due to group pressure perceived as real (encompassing the presence of others) or imagined (encompassing the pressure of social standards) (Myers, 2010, p. 192). The concept of conformity is a powerful influence on the tendency for people to arrange their thoughts, perspectives, and ideas with others, especially when in a group. This takes away from a person’s individuality because they want to feel accepted by others and therefore, a person will accomplish this basic need of approval through conforming.

Psychologist, Sherif, demonstrated the influence of normative social influence in conformity using an Autokinetic effect where participants in this study were asked to estimate how much a stationary point in a dark room has moved.
