Social media has become deeply embedded as a part of today’s American culture and lifestyles, changing the way people interact and communicate with one another. Americans use social media every day; to not only communicate, but to express themselves. These online media sites and blogs serve as entertainment for its users and give them a sense of a social life if they do not already have one. Some users become so obsessed with their online lives that they lose the ability to successfully communicate with people in real life. Their craving for the use of social media becomes an addiction to where they can spend countless hours on their social sites. Facebook, a popular social media cite, has been proven to cause Facebook Depression, a sickness in which a person is emotionally depressed and in self denial. Studies have shown that sites such as Facebook, are a direct link to an individual’s physical and emotional well being.

Social media has been known to have positive and negative effects on the happiness of college students. There are many outcomes to the use of social media and many of them can be detrimental to a student’s happiness. Social media can also encourage new bad behaviors in teenagers who are easily influenced. Teens that use social media must learn to prioritize their lives in order to prevent disorder in their lives. It can also be very helpful for some teens that are socially shy and need new ways of making friends. Many teens today struggle with being shy and don’t know how to interact with their peers. Sites like twitter and Facebook are a gateway in helping these teens

Third, social media doesn’t help for their studies or talents. People think social media is good places to show their talents or works what they did. For example, they argue people can share video clip what they playing the instruments or dancing or singing. It is, however, for people who already good to do those. If you are not good at those things and if you spend time to do social media, it would be hard to progress your talents. I did surveys about relationships between using social media and studying last semester. Most students answered using social media is not helpful to study. Are we becoming less human with the passing of each day? Have we become too dependent on technology, specifically social media? In this day and age, people have different views on social media. They question its true purpose and its effect on society as a whole. With that said, although there are many thoughts concerning the topic/trend of social media something that is undoubtedly true is that social media plays an active role in the lives of the majority of people. Whether in a positive or negative way, social media influences the lives of all people. However this paper focuses on the effect of social media on college students. It addresses both the positive and negative effects of social media on those in college; focusing on a student’s academic efficiency, social interactive skills, and overall productivity.

The more technology advances the more we seem to find different ways to communicate world wide. Daily there are many different types of apps and websites being created to share ideas, photos or feelings. It has changed the lives of many people positively and negatively. Ever since social media grew so did bullying. However there are many places bullying can happen, like in school, outside of school, work, or home. There are two different types of bullying, verbal and physical. It can have a small or big impact, depending on the person. Many people will say that the main causes of bullying today is social media because it allows people to communicate with others not having to be face to face and anonymously making it easier to bully others. Although some may argue that social media causes bullying, the truth is that bullying is actually caused by overexposure of private life, the victim becoming the bully, and lack of supervision .

The amount of likes, followers and comments has consumed the thriving minds of our future generations. It has forced our teens into conformity to where they feel the content of their instagram is more important than the content of their character. Technology has swept our society and it’s people, billions of people are on some social platform. Though the targeted, are our younger generations. Social media has become a growing force in the everyday lives of children everywhere. Today kids are tweeting and instagramming every day rather than playing hide-and-seek and jumping rope. Our younger generations are being faced with problems that are well out of their realm of experience and understanding. The media overall has sacrificed the stability and mental health of our adolescents.

Looking in the mirror and not liking what you see is extremely common, among teenage girls especially, but where does it stem from? Is it human nature to see oneself in a negative light? Perhaps it comes from something more tangible, such as one’s surroundings. Everyday, people are exposed to models and celebrities on social media living unrealistic and uncommon lifestyles. Why does everyone insist on striving for these absurd standards? Perhaps it’s because people, predominantly millennials, pride themselves on their ability to ‘accept everyone’ disregarding sexuality, gender, and size, yet they are constantly judging others whether it’s subtle or very evident. Although modern society is more accepting of different body types than in the past, there is still too much pressure on girls to have the ‘perfect’ body due to emphasis from media, pressure from peers, and American culture.

Many people in younger generations believe that social media and technology are one of the greatest creations. Children, adolescents and even some adults spend almost their entire days on their phones and using social media. People that are always on their phones instead of living in the real world do not realize that it may slowly be doing harm to their mental health and their relationships with people. With that being said, many would disagree with this statement, claiming that social media and texting is actually helping and assisting in making people more sociable and outgoing.
