Social media is a newly formed phenomenon that can be misconstrued as having a negative impact on our new generation. Social media, whether friend or foe, has shaped our society into what it is today. With all the technological developments, it is difficult to determine if a new advancement is productive or not. Social media should be considered a positive stepping stone to future success by contributing to our overall image. We can grow and thrive through the lessons that social platforms provide to us. Social media may connect us to the external world, but it also connects us to ourselves by increasing our likelihood to discover a pertinent occupation. The platforms that have arisen from technology have increased connectivity, constructive thinking, and exposure to the world around us. The importance that the various social platforms hold over our lives is something that will only enhance our understanding and betterment in the future.
Social media is one of the most important stepping stone in obtaining your future goals. Platforms such as Instagram can show the aspects of specific jobs and how they are realistically. The internet and social media have opened so many doors for our generation. Thousands of resources are at our fingertips that 30 years ago would seem impossible. However, this information can be more of a burden rather than a blessing. Scrolling through Instagram you will most likely find images of people with ‘perfect’ bodies in swimsuits. It is very easy to compare your body to these images and not feel confident about yourself. Now put yourself in a young teenager’s perspective, looking at all these images. Their main question might be “Why don’t I look like that?” This raises an issue for teenagers to be more likely to not be comfortable in their own skin, have lowered self-esteem, and body shame themselves. Another issue with social media is the anxiety that can come from it. Today it is apparent that most teenagers using social media platforms tend to be worrying about the color scheme of their profile, number of likes and how fast they show up, their following ratio, regulating the number of posts, the number of followers, number of retweets and many more anxieties. In a weird way, it can be easier to make fun of someone or bully someone behind a screen and not right to their face. This raises another version of bullying known as cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is the most common online risk for teenagers and adolescence (O’Keeffe 801). Researchers have found signs of depression from the use of social media (802). From repeated and extended use of social media there has been 92% of teenagers ages 13-17 going online every day in the US, negative things are sure to come from that usage (Dunlop 35). As just mentioned, there are major negative effects of social media on adolescence, including cyber-bullying, anxiety, lowered self-esteem, and depression.
According to the Pew Research Center, “41% of social media-users have experienced at least one negative outcome as a result of using a social networking site.” In this article, Norton uses logos, pathos, and ethos to explain his standpoint to his audience. Logos are used when Norton brings up the legal issues of social media such as privacy concerns. Bringing the reader into Norton’s own personal experiences of abuse and name-calling uses pathos. Finally, ethos are used indirectly in the article due to the fact that Norton is a writer and has experience with social networking and the negative impact it can have. Norton uses logos, pathos, and ethos by establishing evidence and logical points in his article to persuade his audience against using social networking.
Moving forward, social media has been a major convenience and reward to virtually everyone. On an individual basis, social media allows friends and family both near and far to communicate with one another. Also, businesses are flourishing through the use of social media. Advertising has never been easier. Horn (2013) states, “Our profession, unlike any time before, is demanding we become social media (…) experts” (1).
